The Mansugol valley forest in Woraksan National Park was studied to investigate forest structure in relation to altitude and part of the slope. Forty eight quadrats were set up in the valley forest along altitude of 380m to 915m and part of the slope, and vegetation analysis for the woody species in the tree and subtree layers were carried out. With increasing elevation belt, tree density and basal area of the tree layer decreased while basal area of the subtree layer increased. As elevation increased, the importance percentages of Quercus mongolica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Lindera obtusiloba and Acer mono increased while those of Pinus densiflora, Quercus variablias Quercus serrata and Styrax obassia decreased. Species diversities of the elevation belts including the top of the valley ranged from 0.351 to 0.903, and those of the parts of the slope ranged from 0.780 to 1.064. The range of similarity indices between elevation belts were $36.0\~67.3\%$, and the range of similarity indices between parts of the slope were $66.8\~75.1\%$. According to importance percentage and cluster analysis, the studied valley forest was classified into three forest communities of Pinus densiflora-Quecus species community in the low elevation belt and the middle part of the slope at the middle elevation belt, Quercus mongolica-broad-leaved tree species community in the high elevation belt and the lower and upper parts at the middle elevation belt, and Quercus mongolica community in the top area of the valley. The importace percentage of Quercus mongolica was significantly and negatively correlated with those of Pinus desiflora and Quercus serrata. There were significantly positive correlation among Pinus densiflora, Quercuss serata and Rhus trichocarpa.

To explore on the defense strategies against hervivory of 67 broadleaved tree species, morphological characteristics of the leaf, leaf domatia structure and the number, herbivores insects and mites on the leaves, collected from the trees growing in Taean-gun, Chuncheongnam-do were investigated. 46 broadleaved tree species(68.7%) had the domatia structures, and 21 species including Quercus salicina and Magnolia grandiflora did not. 31 species including Juglans mandshurica and Carpinus laxiflora reveals tuft type, 12 species including Quercus dentata and Corylus heterophylla reveals pocket+tuft type, and 2 species, Sorbus alnifolia and Prunus yedoensis does pocket type, and Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki does pouch type. Domatia number per leaf proves the highest figures, 23.4/leaf for Quercus dentata. Plant defense strategies using leaf lower-surface trichomes of Magnolia grandiflora reveals dense villous, those of Populus alba and Vitis vinifera reveals dense pilose, that of Elaeagnus umbellata does dense scaly hairs, that of Pueraria lobata does dense strigose. Plant defense strategies using extrafloral nectaries were adapted 23 tree species(34.3%). Observed examples are Prunus tomentosa, Ficus carica, Viburnum dilatatum and Carpinus laxiflora. Predatory mites were observed on the leaves of 40 tree species(59.7%), and mean values of predatory mites was highest values 23.4/leaf in Quercus dentata. Minute arthropods destroying the leaf of broadleaved trees. are such as Periphyllus californiensis, P. viridis, Diaspididae sp., gall mites, thrips, and total numbers observed were odered gall mites, Diaspididae sp., aphids and thrips. Natural enemies of these hervivores arthropods are such as predatory mites, Chilocorus rubidus, Coccinella septempunctata and the nymph, Aphidius ervi. These results indicate that defense strategies including protective mutualisms may be frequent in the temperate broadleave trees.
Historical changes of population abundances of European red mite (ERM), Panonychus ulmi (Koch), and two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae (Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae), were described in selected apple orchards in the National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI, Suwon, Korea), based on research reports of the NHRI from 1958 to 1998. ERM was an abundant species up to 1970, and TSSM became a dominant species after 1980. The change occurred around mid 1970. Three hypotheses were made to explain the change: TSSM competitively replaces ERM, ground cover weeds are a major influencing factor on movement of TSSM (TSSM movement into trees is accelerated by destroying weeds), and ERM and TSSM populations are regulated by natural enemy complexes when the orchard system is not disrupted. And long-term results of the interaction between two species were projected according to the combination of different orchard management strategies: pesticide sprays (non-selective toxic pesticide spray : heavy pesticide pressure (HPP), and selective soft pesticide spray = low pesticide pressure (LPP)) and weed control methods (grass planting, and clean culture system with herbicides). In the HPP and grass planting system, ERMs are abundant because ERM can avoid competition with TSSM as movement of TSSM to trees are restricted, and natural enemy complexes are destroyed by toxic pesticides. In the HPP and clean culture system, TSSMs are abundant because TSSM moves to trees from early season and competitively replaces ERM. In the LPP and grass planting system, ERMs are abundant because movement of TSSM to trees is reduced, but they do not build up a high population density since their densities are regulated by natural enemy complexes. In the LPP and clean culture system, TSSM moves to trees and competes with ERM, but the competition pressure is reduced because population densities of mites are regulated in a lower level by natural enemy complexes. So, ERM can occurs in late season. Thus, two species can coexist temporarily with more ERM in early season and more TSSM in late season. TSSM abundant phenomenon presented in this study can be partially explained as a result of long-term interaction between ERM and TSSM under the HPP and clean culture system.
Samples of water, soil, and sediment were taken from 10 streams near Andong, Korea in May 2004. To assess the degree of environmental pollution of each stream, chemical pollutants such as total notrogen (T-N), total phosphorus (T-P), chemical oxygen demand (COD), heavy metals, organophosphorus pesticides, organochlorine pesticides, and dioxin-like PCB congeners were analyzed by standard process tests or U.S. EPA methods. In addition, biomarkers originated from insect immune systems of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, were used to analysis of the environmental samples. Except Waya-chun stream showing T-N content of 9.12 mg/L, most streams were contaminated with relatively low levels of overall pollutants in terms of T-N, T-P, and COD, compared to their acceptable environmental levels designated by the Ministry of Environment. Contents of Pb and Cd in samples of each stream were much lower than environmentally permissible levels. However, several times higherconcentrations of Pb and Cd were found in locations at Mi-chun, Kilan-chun, and Hyunha-chun streams, in comparison with other streams. Diazinon, parathion, and phenthoate compounds among organophosphorus pesticides were detected as concentrations of 0.19, 0.40, and $1.13\;{\mu}g/g$, respectively, from soil sample collected in the vicinity of Mi-chun stream. On the other hand, 16 organochlorine pesticides and 12 dioxin-like PCB congeners, known as endocrine disrupting chemicals, selected in this study were not found above the limit of detection. Biomarker analyses using insect immune responses indicated that Waya-chun stream was suspected as exposure to environmental pollutants. Limitation and compensation of both environmental analysis techniques are discussed.
Through the laboratory and vinyl house experiments, the effects of inoculum density, plant age and temperature on the incidence of Phytophthora crown rot of pepper (Capsicum annum L.) were investigated. The propagule survival was greater in the natural soil than in autoclaved soil within first 2 weeks when the sporangial suspension of the pathogenic fungus was incorporated into soil, thereafter the survivability reduced rapidly. The propagule was not detectable in 35 days by means of Papavizas selective medium neither in natural nor in autoclaved soil. At least 5 sporangia per gram soil were required to induce crown rot for 30 days old pepper seedlings. Further increase in inoculum concentration above this threshold level resulted in higher disease incidence and shorter incubation period. When the same amount of inoculum was infested, higher disease incidence was observed for younger plants until 3 weeks after inoculation. On the other hand after 4 weeks this tendency was not extended any more. Younger plants were recognized as having shorter incubation period upon infection, however, the days from first symptom appearance to complete death were not significantly different among differently aged seedlings. Exposure of inoculated pepper seedlings to $25^{\circ}C$ resulted in highest infection rates and followed by those to $30^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$ but no disease was found at $15^{\circ}C\;and\;35^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. When the plants previously incubated at different temperature for 10 days were moved to $25^{\circ}C$ room temperature, prior exposure to $20^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C$ brought continuous disease development. Even those plants preincubated at $15^{\circ}C$ were diseased up to 50%. But the prior exposure to $35^{\circ}C$ induced no symptom developed, indicating no seedlings infected at all.
Cultural characteristics Lecanicillium lecani Btab01 and its insecticidal activity against tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) were investigated. On potato dextrose agar, tryptic soy agar and SDA+Y media, mycelial growth of L. lecani Btab01 was best at $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ and suppressed above $28^{\circ}C$. Both solid culture and liquid culture of L. lecani Btab01 showed high insecticidal activity, 93.9 and 98.3% respectively, against nymph of tobacco whitefly, but there is no significant difference. When culture of L. lecani Btab01 was treated at the concentration of $10^5$, $10^6$, $10^7$ and $10^8$ cfu/ml, their insecticidal activity were 5.8%, 33.8%, 77.3% and 98.5% respectively, and $LT_{50}$ values were 16.1 days, 7.3 days, 5.1 days and 3.5 days respectively. When nymphs were treated by the cultures of L. lecani Btab01 and maintained under saturated condition for zero hour, 24 hours and 168 hours, their control activities were 0%, 20.3% and 100% respectively. Spore germination of L. lecani Btab01 was increased about two times by adding edible oil. When L. lecani Btab01 was treated to control nymph with 0.1% edible oil, it showed high control activity(98.6%) compared to single treatment of L. lecani Btab01 (79.9%).
This study proviedes GARCH model(Bollerslev, 1986) to analyze the structural characteristics of price volatility in domestic aquacultural fish market of Korea. As a case study, flatfish and rock-fish are analyzed as major species with relatively high portion in an aspect of production volume among fish captured in Korea. For analyzing, this study uses daily market data (dating from Jan 1 2000 to June 30, 2008) published by the Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market which is located in Seoul of Korea. This study performs normality test on trading volume and price volatility of flatfish and rock-fish as an advanced empirical approach. The normality test adopted is Jarque-Bera test statistic. As a result, first, a null hypothesis that "an empirical distribution follows normal distribution" was rejected in both fishes. The distribution of daily market data of them were not only biased toward positive(+) direction in terms of kurtosis and skewness, but also characterized by leptokurtic distribution with long right tail. Secondly, serial correlations were found in data on market trading volume and price volatility of two species during very long period. Thirdly, the results of unit root test and ARCH-LM test showed that all data of time series were very stationary and demonstrated effects of ARCH. These statistical characteristics can be explained as a reasonable ground for supporting the fitness of GARCH model in order to estimate conditional variances that reveal price volatility in empirical analysis. From empirical data analysis above, this study drew the following conclusions. First of all, from an empirical analysis on potential effects of seasonality and the day of week on price volatility of aquacultural fish, Monday effects were found in both species and Thursday and Friday effects were also found in flatfish. This indicates that Monday is effective in expanding price volatility of aquacultural fish market and also Monday has higher effects upon the price volatility of fish than other days of week have since it has more new information for weekend. Secondly, the empirical analysis led to a common conclusion that there was very high price volatility of flatfish and rock-fish. This points out that the persistency parameter($\lambda$), an index of possibility for current volatility to sustain similarly in the future, was higher than 0.8-equivalently nearly to 1-in both flatfish and rock-fish, which presents volatility clustering. Also, this study estimated and compared and model that hypothesized normal distributions in order to determine fitness of respective models. As a result, the fitness of GARCH(1, 1)-t model was better than model where the distribution of error term was hypothesized through-distribution due to characteristics of fat-tailed distribution, was also better than model, as described in the results of basic statistic analysis. In conclusion, this study has an important mean in that it was introduced firstly in Korea to investigate in price volatility of Korean aquacultural fishery products, although there was partially a limited of official statistic data. Therefore, it is expected that the results of this study will be useful as a reference material for making and assessing governmental policies. Also, it is looked forward that the results will be helpful to build a fishery business plan as and aspect of producer, and also to take timely measures to potential price fluctuations of fishery products in market. Hence, it is advisable that further studies related to such price volatility in fishery market will extend and evolve into a wider variety of articles and issues in near future.
This study was conducted to find out the effect of cut-off period (0 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, and 24 hours) to supply nutrient solution for chicon forcing at that was predrying treatment on the storability of chicon. The cut-off treatment increased dry matter rate, respiration rate, and ethylene production rate. The dry matter rate of chicon increased, as the cut-off period increased, but the respiration rate and ethylene production rate of chicon was highest in 12 hours and 6 hours cut-off treatment, respectively, and then their rates decreased, as the cut-off period prolonged. The weight loss at cut-off 6 hours treatment was lower than other treatments during $10^{\circ}C$ storage temperature. The cut-off 6 hours treatment showed higher carbon dioxide and oxygen concentration in 10,000 cc/$m^2$/day/atm oxygen permeability film package during storage period than control and showed a little predrying effect but was not statistically significant. At $4^{th}$ day, the ethylene concentration reached higher than other storage day and after that decreased but was not statistically significant. The quality of chicon for 3 hours, 6 hours, 24 hours cut-off treatments on storability showed higher than other treatments, accordingly. The 6 hours cut-off treatment showed the inhibited effect of the degree of browning of chicon cutting plane. The effect of 6 hours cut-off treatment on storability of chicon showed proper predrying effect, reduced moisture loss and browning inhibition apparently during $10^{\circ}C$ storage.

This study was undertaken the effect of high temperature and high humidity on protein expression and especially plasma membrane (PM) $H^{+}ATPase$ of umbel with flowers of early cultivar 'Shinsunhwang' and intermediate cultivar 'Maebsihwang' of onion (Allium cepa L.). There were no visible any difference on the protein pattern from before flowering stage to full flowering stage of two onion cultivars, however, seed set stages were revealed induced/deduced protein patterns. At day 18, protein expression pattern of the high temperature and high humidity treatments of two cultivars was significantly reduced compared to controls. Furthermore, various protein expression of the high temperature treatment was more reduced compared to high humidity treatment. PM $H^{+}ATPase$ expression of the control plants of two onion cultivars was clearly shown, but was not detectable under high temperature treatment of the two onion cultivars using western blot analysis. PM $H^{+}ATPase$ expression of the high humidity treatment was faintly detected intermediate cultivar 'Maebsihwang', not early cultivar 'Shinsunhwang'. These results indicate that protein expression pattern and PM $H^{+}ATPase$ under high temperature treatment was considered to be more damaged compared to high humidity.
The temperature fluctuations was investigated in cold distribution chain of radish sprout, typical of commercial practice. Although the temperature of distribution chain was maintained below 5$^{\circ}C$ in precooling and packaging steps, and 10$^{\circ}C$ in transporting, temperature of loading step increased up to 18$^{\circ}C$ at market. Based on this investigation, the simulated cold distribution conditions were consisted of precooling and packaging step; 5$^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours and transporting and loading steps; 5$^{\circ}C$, 10$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$ and $^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, and storage and market steps; 5$^{\circ}C$ and 10$^{\circ}C$ for 17 days. The radish sprouts were cultivated at 25$^{\circ}C$ and dark condition for S days and placed in light condition for greening. They were packaged by 25 ${\mu}m$ ceramic film after precooling for 6 hours in 5$^{\circ}C$. The fresh weight loss and visual quality of radish sprout decreased with the increase of the temperature in transporting and loading steps. The carbon dioxide content of packages increased, but the oxygen content decreased rapidly in 1day after storage, as the temperature of transporting and loading steps increased. The ethylene content in packages increased fastest in higher temperature of transporting and loading steps treatment, and showed highest in 5$^{\circ}C$-30$^{\circ}C$-10$^{\circ}C$ treatment (temperature of precooling and packaging steps for 12 hours - temperature of transporting and loading steps for 6 hours - temperature of storage step for 14 days) followed by 5$^{\circ}C$-20$^{\circ}C$-10$^{\circ}C$ treatment. The high temperature of transporting and loading steps resulted in deterioration qualities and atmosphere conditions in packages of sprout. These results suggested that the temperature fluctuation in distribution should influence the shelf-life of radish sprouts, even thought the periods of fluctuation was just 6 hours.
