  • The purpose of this study was to understand changes in Seoul's downtown planning from the 1960s to 1990s. The approach was examined by classifying its formation process though urban conservation. The effects of modernization and urbanization on Seoul's downtown planning were as follows. In the 1960s, Seoul attempted to decentralize urban functions due to excessive population. In the 1970s, a policy to diversify urban functions according to Gangnam development was enacted. In the 1980s, the existing downtown declined, and the sub-downtown grew with changing urban functions. In the 1990s, the identity of the existing downtown was recognized through the Seoul Memorial Project. This study also analyzed downtown planning efforts concerned with urban conservation. First, the physical aspects of existing buildings and street facilities were maintained. Second, the spatial aspects for the maintenance of surrounding areas were proposed. Fourth, the social aspects for accessibility by Seoul citizens was improved. This analysis demonstrates the concept of urban conservation based on physical-spatial-social aspects.

  • A discourse on the Independence Hall of Korea, a representative cultural project of the 1980s, has been understood as a repetition of the traditional debate of the 1960s. It was considered as a petrified propaganda aimed at ensuring the fragile legitimacy of the military regime, and the architect as a sympathizer. Even if all these facts are true, it does not give any explanation for the architecture. Scrutinizing the building process and the change of discourse in the Independence Hall of Korea, this paper tries to explore a section of contemporary Korean architecture in the 1980s. The architect who designed the Independence Hall of Korea is Kim Kiwoong, however, it was Kim Won who took charge of overall scheme for it. Kim Won replaced the role of a technocrat in the 1960s, who deprived architects of his autonomy. Against this backdrop, Kim Kiwoong attempted to explain his own building via various concept like postmodernism, which gave him very proper context. But, later, he appropriated words like void and madang. These derived from some architectural historian's researches in 1970s, and were to predict the architecture of the 1990s.

  • Long-term variability in the intermediate layer of the eastern Japan Basin has been investigated to understand the variability of water mass formation in the East Sea. The simultaneous decrease of temperature at shallower depths and oxygen increasing at deeper depths in the intermediate layer took place in the late 1960's sand the mid-1980's. Records of winter sea surface temperatures and air temperatures showed that there were cold winters that persisted for several years during those periods. Therefore, it was assumed that a large amount of newly-formed water was supplied to the intermediate layer during those cold winters. Close analysis suggests that the formation of the Upper Portion of Proper Water occurred in the late 1960's and the Central Water in the mid-1980's.
