Comparison of Painting Characteristics on Portraits by Nondestructive Analysis of Joseon Dynasty in 18th Century - Focusing on Yu Eon-ho's Portrait - (비파괴 성분 분석을 통한 18세기 초상화의 채색 특성 비교 고찰 - 유언호 초상화를 중심으로 -)

  • We estimated pigments and painting techniques with nondestructive analysis for Yu Eonho's portrait made in the eighteenth century, then compared with 11 portraits and painting characteristics at that time. The pigments used to Yu Eon-ho's portrait include lead white, yellow dye, cinnabar, minium, and pink dye, malachite, azurite, iron oxide red and brown dye, blue and pink dye for purple. In the result compared with painted pigments of 11 portraits, iron oxide red without cinnabar was used on the face part and organic green dye only was used instead of inorganic pigments on the other side of clothing after Yu Eonho's portraits portrait. This study is show the painting techniques on the portraits in the late $18^{th}$ century. We expect to use as useful referencing data for the study on the coloring technique of a portrait in the late Joseon Dynasty.

A Study on Hakchangui, the Scholar's Robe with Dark Trim (학창의 연구)

  • This study set out to examine Hakchangui worn in Joseon around the 18th century and further the relationships between the Chinese Hakchang and Joseon Hakchangui, as well as to figure out spread factors of Hakchangui. The study proceeded as follows: 1)The Hakchangui was examined those appearing in the collections of works and paintings after the 17th century. 2)The Zhuge Liang's Hakchang was researched through Romance of Three Kingdoms, paintings and sculptures. 3)The images of Hakchangui wearers described in literature were investigated to understand the symbolic meanings of Hakchangui in Joseon those days. Those research efforts revealed four findings: 1)In many cases, the Hakchangui worn in Joseon in the 17th and 18th century has side slits, but no back slit. It's both sides of the center front were parallel, not overlapped. 2)Hakchangui was strange to the Joseon people until the end of the 18th century but started to permeate among those who liked classic style. 3)The aspects of Zhuge Liang were standardized in the combination of 'Yungeon, Hakchang, a feather fan and a wagon' in Romance of Three Kingdoms. 4)Zhuge Liang was considered as a symbol of wisdom and loyalty and had an image of a Taoist hermit who transcended the mundane world. The analysis of the research findings led to two following conclusions: 1)ln Joseon the Chinese Hakchang was introduced to people who had exchanges with Chinese or liked classic style in the 17th and 18th century and gradually spread by their advocates. 2)The Hakchangui must have been increasingly worn by more Joseon scholars because they started to borrow the image of Zhuge Liang driven by the popularity of Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the tendency of reinforcing Zhuge Liang's image as a loyal subject by the kings of Joseon.

The Jeogori Included in The Buddist Statue in 1748 (1748년 불복장 저고리 소고)

  • The Purpose of this study is to investigate the jeogori included in the buddist statue in 1748. The jeogori was similar in shape to excavated costume of Andong Kwon, Papyung Yoon, and Chungyeongunju in 18th century. This jeogori was useful to estimate the interesting process of shape change of jeogori in 18th century. Four different silk fabrics were used in the jeogori. Outer fabrics were satin weave with floral, lattice strip, dragon, and cloud patterns. The ground area was 5-harness warp faced satin and the patterned area was 5-harness filling faced satin. An inner fabric was simple plain weave. Warp and filling yarns of all fabrics in this jeogori had no twist.

  • This paper sought to examine characteristics and differences of the construction methods and the materials of the wall repair by three command through individual command records and national documents. This paper is based on the management section of three commands(Samgunyoung), which was in charge of a repair and management of Hanyangdoseong(Seoul city wall) in 18th century. The purpose and background of the study are as follows. First, through each inscribed stones on the rampart and the parapet, it is to grasp accurately the point of change of Hanyangdoseng after the 18th century. Second, through inscribed stones, the site evidence of the repair work in the late Joseon Dynasty, it is to find out the aspects of the development process of repair and reconstruction technology of Hanyangdoseng.

  • The role of jurisprudence is examined in the early history of probability and statistics. From the mid-17th to the early 18th century, Christiaan Huygens and Jacob Bernoulli used mathematical expectation to solve the problems that originated from games of chance. We demonstrate that their concept of expectation as a fair price for participating in a game came from the legal concept of 'fair trade'. In addition, we consider that the probability that Bernoulli defined in his Ars Conjectandi originated from the legal concept of 'degree of certainty'. After considering some contributions of Laplace and Poisson, we examined the history of census and statistical survey in the early 19th century. Contrary to the history of the 17th and 18th century, statistics influenced society and law in the 19th century.

A study on the reappearance of upper-class girls' costume contents in early 18th century - Focusing on the yeoui(女衣) and skirt - (18세기 초 상류층 여아복식 재현 콘텐츠 연구 - 여의(女衣)와 치마를 중심으로 -)

  • This study is designed to compensate for the lack of children's clothing relics from the early 18th century and to reproduce young upper-class girls' costume as hanbokcontent. The shapes and materials of costumes are based on the record of 『Sukjong-silrok』 in 1701 and the characteristics of adult ladie's costume relics in this period, but reproduced as miniatures of these relics as like Joseon children's clothing of another period. The reproduced costumes are formal wear for 3~4 year-old girls, consisting of yeoui [女衣], long unlined skirts, and lined skirts. Sizes were set at a height ratio of approximately 155:95. Yeoui is sam-hoejang-jeogori using pine pollen-colored damask with a grape-squirrel pattern and a purple damask with flower-treasure pattern. The full length of yeoui is 24.5cm. It has a square-dangko outer collar with square inner collar. The long unlined skirt is a six-width overskirt that is 82cm long, made with lotus patterned sa. The lined skirt is a five-width skirt that is 61.3cm made with flower-treasure patterned red damask and ju. Several long pleats on both sides of these two skirts have been omitted. The result provides meaningful content for children's clothing in the early 18th century and will be used as costume for an educational trial performance.

18th Century Costume Malting for Korean Theatre I -Focused on the habit a la francaise- (무대의상을 위한 18세기 복식의 현대적 제작방법 (제1보) -Habit a la Francaise를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this paper is to make it easy to reproduce the Pattern and sewing technique of men's coat in 18th century. which are modified in order to be made readily available in Korean theatre costume. The investigation was performed in three steps. 1st, The papers and records about development and change of men's coats were reviewed. End; The whole process of the way how to make a typical 18th century men's coats were sewn. 3rd ; The modification or revision into the more simplified pattern using by CAD system and sewing technique were suggested in detail. The size of the pattern in the original one, which we chose for this research, was generally small. with the side line being moved back a little. Moreover, arm movements were severely restricted because of the small arm-hole. The problems of original pattern were corrected by making both front and back pattern snug and side line being moved to the front, and making arm-hole wider. In the sewing technique, the simple way how to use of Padding, inter-linings and linings and to create the most noticeable figure of 18th century men's coat. This article may help theatre costume production in Korean performing art.

Characteristic Analysis and Dating Guidance of European High Heeled Shoes Design in the 18th Century (18세기 하이힐 디자인의 특성 및 연대추정에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristic analysis and to date guidance of European high heeled shoes in 18th century. The research was conducted by stylistic analysis of high heeled shoes from literature review and museums resource. 14 comparative study on shoe objects dating from 1600-1790 in the Museum at F.I.T., New York, Museum of Art, Boston and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York were selected. The result of this study are as follows: (1) The origin and development of high heeled shoes were accomplished by protection, social status and exaggeration of body, decoration and fashion. (2) According to the comparative study of Museum objects and literature, characteristic analysis of high heeled shoes from 1700-20s, 1730-40s, 1750-60s, 1770-89 and 1890-1900 were accomplished. (3) Significant elements of European women's shoes from 18th century that aid dating are identified as the presence of white rand, shape of tongue, heel shape and height, latchat, toe shape, color and materials.

The Architectural Features of French Picturesque Gardens and Fabriques in the 18th Century (18세기 프랑스 픽처레스크 정원과 파브리크 건축 특성)

  • Although small but eye-catching outdoor constructions are generally called follies in contemporary architecture, French landscape researchers found different features of the fabrique, which they called separately from the folly. Unlike the 18th-century English gardens, in which the landscape itself was emphasized more than decorative structures in it, French fabriques actively made the atmosphere of picturesque gardens. In this background, this paper, from the architectural point of view, studied the 18th-century garden theories in both Britain and France, which might influence the formation of the fabrique. Then, it tried to analyze the features of French major picturesque gardens and their fabriques, relating them to painting, drama, and culture. In conclusion, this study, focusing on the relationship between the garden and its fabriques or follies, compared the different features between the English landscape gardens and the French picturesque ones in the 18th century.

Form and Location of Chiseong(square-shaped lookout) Constructed in Hanyangdoseong(Seoul city wall) of the 18th Century (18세기에 축조된 한양도성 치성의 형식과 위치)

  • The purpose of this study is to research about the construction of Chiseong around the Heunginjimun Gate area in the 18th century. the conclusions derived from the historical evidence of the number, location, size, and form, and construction method of Chiseong was as follows. First, the Chiseong(Square-shaped lookout) of Hanyangdoseong was built in the 29th year of King Yeongjo(1753) and can be found in the national record. Five sites of the Chiseong are currently identified. It is assumed that the Foru was installed on top of some of the Chiseongs. Second, Chiseong was destroyed sequentially in the first half of the 20th century. Third, Chiseong is a rectangular in shape and six are constructed. Fourth, Sixth Chiseong could figure out through Hengryeopungsokdo, the drawing of Jeong Seon.
