Kinetics of $CO_2$ Absorption in Aqueous AMP (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol) Solutions

  • The reaction rate of $CO_2$ with 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP), MEA monoethanolamine (MEA) and diethanolamine (DEA) in aqueous solutions has been determined using a stirred vessel with a plane gas-liquid interface over a wide range of concentrations of amines at different temperatures. The results show that the overall reaction rate is first order with respect to both $CO_2$ and amino. The reaction rate constant varies with temperature according to the relationship which agrees with the experimental data. The proposed interpretation is that the kinetic rate determining step is a reaction of $CO_2$ with amine to form carbamic acid which is then totally and immediately ionized.

Volatile Flavor Components in the Mashes of Takju Prepared Using Different Yeasts (효모종류를 달리한 탁주 술덧의 휘발성 향기성분)

  • In this study, we examined the volatile flavor components in the mashes of takju prepared using different yeasts such as Saccharomyces coreanus, S. ellipsoideus, S. carlsbergensis, S. cerevisiae (Baker's yeast), and S, rouxii by GC and GC-MS. Fourteen alcohols, 13 esters, 5 acids, 3 aldehydes, 7 amines, and 2 other compounds were identified in the mash after 6 days of fermentation. On day 6, the takju fermented by S. coreanus had the greatest variety of volatile flavor components. Fifteen flavor components, including ethanol, isobutyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, methyl pentanol, 1,3-butanediol, 3-methylthio-1-propanol, benzeneethanol, ethyl lactate, acetic acid, acetaldehyde, and 1,3-cyclohexane diamine, were typically detected in all the treatments. The relative peak areas of the volatile components were as follows: alcohols (96.758-99.387%), esters (0.081-0.968%), acids (0.040-0.640%), aldehydes (0.266-0.959%), and amines (0.011-0.047%). In particular, 1-propanol, isobutyl alcohol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2,3-butanediol, trimethyl benzylalcohol, heptene-2,4-diol, ethyl lactate, diethyl succinate, ethyl nonanoate, methyl hexadecanoate, linoleic acid, hexadecanoic acid, and acetaldehyde were hish in the takju made by S. coreanus. Also, ethyl stearate was high in the takju made by S. carlsbergensis, and hexanoic acid was high in the takju made by S. cerevisiae. Finally, methyl pentanol, 1,3-butanediol, 3-methylthio-1-propanol, benzene ethanol, ethyl octadecanoate, acetic acid, pentanal, and 1,3-cyclohexane diamine were high in the takju made by S. rouxii.

Effect of elasticity of aqueous colloidal silica solution on chemical absorption of carbon dioxide with 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol

  • Carbon dioxide was absorbed into the aqueous nanometer sized colloidal silica solution of 0-31 wt% and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol of $0-2kmol/m^3$ in a flat-stirred vessel with the impeller of various sizes and speeds at $25^{\circ}C$ and 0.101 MPa to measure the absorption rate of $CO_2$. The volumetric liquid-side mass transfer coefficient$(k_La)\;of\;CO_2$ was used to obtain the empirical correlation formula containing the rheological behavior of the aqueous colloidal silica solution. Reduction of the measured $k_La$ was explained by the viscoelastic properties of the aqueous colloidal silica solution. The theoretical value of the absorption rate of $CO_2$ was estimated from the model based on the film theory accompanied by chemical reaction and compared with the measured value.

  • Ten yeast strains affecting doenjang flavor were isolated from soybean fermented foods (traditional meju and doenjang), among which Zygosaccharomyces sp. Y-2-5, showing excellent growth, glucose consumption, pH, and flavor production, was selected. Higher alcohols produced by Zygosaccharomyces sp. Y-2-5 related to flavor were 2-propanol, 1-propanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 1-butanol, and 3.3-dimethyl-2-butanol. Optimal culture conditions for Zygosaccharomyces sp. Y-2-5 were 10% (w/v) NaCl, pH 4.0, 3.0% (w/v) glucose concentration, and inoculation time day 0 or 15 doenjang fermentation.

  • 2-propanol/acetone/hydrogen 반응계로 구성된 화학적 열펌프 시스템은 낮은 온도(82.5~$90^{\circ}C$)에서의 2-propanol의 탈수소화 반응과 높은 온도(약 $200^{\circ}C$ 부근)에서의 acetone의 수소화반응을 이용하여 열을 고품위화 시키는 장치이다. 본 연구에서는 이 시스템의 해석 및 설계를 목적으로 이 시스템에 대한 수치적인 모델들을 세우고 Sequential modular approach를 이용하여 시스템의 모사를 수행하였다. 또한 에너지 효율을 최대화하기 위하여 열펌프 시스템에서의 환류비의 영향을 규명하였다. 모사결과 이 시스템의 scale up을 위한 정량적인 정상상태 운전조건들을 구할수 있었으며 두 반응의 반응 전화율이 다르더라도 반응물의 유량의 차이를 통하여 두 반응열이 거의 같아지는 것을 알수 있었다. 아울러 주어진 운전조건에서 증류의 환류비는 최소환류비 근처의 최적값이 존재함을 알수 있었다.

  • Tissue Factor (TF), a principal initiator of the veterbrate coagulation cascade is known to to induced in endothelial cells, monocytes and macrophages by inflammetry stimuli and in many pathological conditions. Through our synthetic efforts to develop new TF inhibitors, seventeen N-C-18 alkenyl group (9-octadecenyl or 9,12-octadecadienyl) substituted aminoalcohols (2-aminoethanol, 1-amino-2-propanol and 3-amino-1-propanol) were prepared and their in vitro TF inhibitory activities were examined.   • Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC's) are chemicals that either mimic endogenous hormones interfering with pharmacokinetics or act by other mechanisms. Some endocrine disrupters were reported to be chemical substances that cause apoptosis in cells. A number of reports have indicated that 1,3-DCP, one of the EDC's may act as an endocrine disrupter and also has possible carcinogenic effects. 1,3-DCP, present in commercial protein hydrolysates used for human nutrition, are genotoxic and 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol induced tumors in rats. In the present study, it was investigated whether 1,3-DCP induces ROS generation and apotosis in A549 adenocarcinoma cells. Here we show that 1,3-DCP inhibits the growth of lung cancer cell lines and generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), a major cause of DNA damage and genetic instability, It was investigated that 1,3-DCP increases G1 phase cells after 12 hours, thereafter abruptly draws A549 cells to G0 state after 24 hours by flow cytometric analysis. 1,3-DCP induces p53 and $p21^{Cip1/WAF1}$ activation time- and dose-dependently by 24 hours, while the level $p21^{Cip1/WAF1}$ was decreased after 48 hours. These results suggest that 1,3-DCP, an EDC's generates ROS and regulates genes involved with cell cycle and apoptosis.

Analysis of Peroxide Curing Agents in EVA Compounds and Vulcanizates

  • Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) compounds and vulcanizates containing dicumyl peroxide (DCP) (HD) were prepared, and the curing agent and reaction products were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Samples containing trially cyanurate (TAC) and DCP (HDT) were also prepared and analyzed. Some raw DCP were decomposed in the injector region of GC to produce acetophenone. DCP was detected in the HD compound but was not observed in the HD vulcanizate, and instead acetophenone and 2-phenyl-2-propanol were detected. Both DCP and TAC were observed in the HDT compound but not in the HDT vulcanizate, where acetophenone and 2-phenyl-2-propanol were detected. Thus, some of the DCP decomposed during the compounding process. The formation mechanism for acetophenone and 2-phenyl-2-propanol during the crosslinking reaction was identified, and differences in the crosslinking reactions of HD and HDT compounds were discussed.

  • Baikhaju, Nockpaju, Dongdongju and Chungmyungju of the traditional Yakjus - the native alcoholic beverage of Korea - with the different fermentation methods were brewed and the volatile odor components were analized by gas chromatography methods of headspace gas. The general constituent content in them was different a little, and formaldehyde, acetone, acetaldehyde, ethylacetate, ethylalcohol, n-propanol, iso-butanol, iso-amylalcohol, diacetyl and dimethyl sulfide were separated and quantified into the volatile aroma components. The contents of acetaldehyde, ethylacetate and n-propanol were $17{\sim}73ppm$, and iso-amylalcohol were $418{\sim}925ppm$. The contents of formaldehyde and acetone were $0{\sim}2.15ppm$, and that of diacetyl and dimethyl sulfide were $0.032{\sim}1.012ppm$, and $5{\sim}65ppb$.

  • xAl-yZr mixed oxide catalysts with different molar ratios of Al/(Al+Zr) were prepared by a co-precipitation method and its catalytic performance was compared in the iso-propanol dehydration as a model reaction. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), N2 adsorprion-desorption, NH3 temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), and iso-propanol TPD analyses. The addition of Al into ZrO2 promoted the formation of relatively small particles with large surface areas and retarded the transformation of teragonal phase to monoclnic phase. NH3-TPD results revealed that the relative acidity of the catalysts increased along with the increase of Al molar ratio. The catalytic activity for the dehydration of iso-propanol to propylene was also increased with the same tendency. The catalytic activity could be correlated with high surface area, acidity and easy desorption of iso-propanol.
