Sambucus williamsii var. coreana have been used as a traditional medical food. This research was conducted to investigate the antioxidants of S. williamsii var. coreana leave and stem extracts. Total phenolic content of S. williamsii var. coreana leaves and stem water extracts were 6.6 and 2.0 mg/mL. The EDA by DPPH free radical scavenging test of S. williamsii var. coreana leaves extracts were 99.5 and 89.7% in water and ethanol extracts contained phenolic 200 ${\mu}g/mL$. The stem extracts were 92.2 and 94.3% in water and ethanol extracts contained phenolic 200 ${\mu}g/mL$. The ABTS radical decolorization activity of water and ethanol extracts from leaves were 79.8 and 99.1% at phenolic 200 ${\mu}g/mL$ and water and ethanol extracts from stem were 90.8 and 97.2% at phenolic 200 ${\mu}g/mL$. The antioxidant protection factor of water and ethanol extracts from leaves were 1.1 PF and 1.1 PF at phenolic 200 ${\mu}g/mL$ and water and ethanol extracts from stem were 1.4 PF and 1.0 PF at phenolic 200 ${\mu}g/mL$. The TBARs of water and ethanol extracts from leaves were 88.7 and 98.1% at phenolic 200 ${\mu}g/mL$ and water and ethanol extracts from stem were 93.6 and 90.6% at phenolic 200 ${\mu}g/mL$. The antioxidative activities of extracts from S. williamsii var. coreana leaves and stem were higher than BHT as positive control. These results suggests that S. williamsii var. coreana extracts have the greatest property as a natural antioxidative source.
The ${\mu}$-turn coil having a width of ${\mu}m$ on the GMR-SV (giant magnetoresistance-spin valve) device based on the antiferromagnetic IrMn layer was fabricated by using the optical lithography process. In the case of GMR-SV film and GMR-SV device, the magnetoresistance ratios and the magnetic sensitivities are 4.4%, 2.0%/Oe and 1.6 %, 0.1%/Oe, respectively. In the y-z plane the distribution of magnetic field of GMR-SV device and $10{\mu}$-turns coil which put under the several magnetic bead(MB)s with a diameter of $1{\mu}m$ attached to RBC (red blood cell) was analyzed by the computer simulation using the finite element method. When the AC currents of 20 kHz from 0.1 mA to 10.0 mA flow to the 10 turns ${\mu}$-coil, the magnetic field at the position of $z=0{\mu}m$ at the center of coil was calculated from $30.1{\mu}T$ to $3060{\mu}T$ in proportion to the current. The magnetic field at the position of $z=10{\mu}m$ was decreased to one-sixth of that of $z=0{\mu}m$. It was confirmed that the $10{\mu}$-turn coil having enough magnitude of magnetic field for the capture of RBC is possible to use as a biosensor for the detection of magnetic beads attached to RBC.
This study was designed to investigate the protective effect of the combination of fucoidan and lutein against AAPH-induced oxidative stress in THP-1 cells. The combination of fucoidan and lutein existed significant antioxidant effect on AAPH-damaged THP-1 cells by using lipid peroxidation and cellular antioxidant capacity assay. Fucoidan($1\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) and lutein($10\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) did not affect at all the viability of THP-1 cells, but protected the AAPH-damage of THP-1 cells at the same concentration. The viability of THP-1 cells was 0% with 1 mM AAPH alone, the protective effect of fucoidan($1\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) and lutein($10\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) was 37% and 36%, respectively. The combination of fucoidan($1\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) and lutein($10\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) exhibited significant inhibitory effect of lipid peroxidation using TBARS assay and cellular antioxidant capacity using DCFH-DA assay. In lipid peroxidation, the TBARS value of 1 mM AAPH alone was $0.8{\pm}0.03\;nM$ MDA, its of the combination of fucoidan($1\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) and lutein($10\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) was $0.2{\pm}0.05\;nM$ MDA. In cellular antioxidant capacity, the combination of fucoidan($1\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) and lutein($10\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) exhibited significant cellular antioxidant capacity of 76%, whereas quercetin($10\;{\mu}M$) as positive control exhibited the cellular antioxidant capacity of 32%. These results indicate that the cotreatment of fucoidan and lutein protects against AAPH-induced THP-1 cell damage by inhibiting lipid peroxidation, increasing cellular antioxidant capacity.

To develop food additives from pyroligneous liquor, we first examined the physicochemical characteristics of volatile substances. The pH, gravity, acidity, solution tar, and scorched remains in the pyroligneous liquor were 2.50, 1.020, $0.8\%$$2.31\%$ and $0.008\%$ respectively. The main compounds of pyroligneous liquor were 2,6-dimethoxyphenol (syringol), 2-hydroxy-2-cyclopenten-l-one, 1,2-benzenediol (catechol), phenol, 2 (5H)-furanone, 2-methoxyphenol (guaiacol), 5-hydroxymethyl-2 furancarboxaldehyde were found in organic phase, whereas catechol, 1,4 : 3,6-dianhydro-${\alpha}d$-glucopyranose, cyclopropyl carbinol, 5-hydroxymethyl-2 furancarboxaldehyde in aqueous phase.
Tobacco and ginseng plants differed in responses to varied light intensities. Tobacco showed high in CO$_2$ uptake and RuBPCase activity at 1900 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, being high by 3.7 times and 2.7 times than ginseng respectively. Close positive relationships existed between CO$_2$ uptake and RuBPCase activity in tobacco. However, ginseng showed negative correlation. The activity of glycolate oxidase and malate dehydrogenase in tobacco was high at 1900 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, but those of ginseng was high at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/. Nitrate reductase activity of tobacco at 1900 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/ was 2 times higher than that at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, while that of ginseng was no detected in all plots. The content of protein and chlorophyll in tobacco was 2.2 times and 1.5 times higher than in ginseng at the most efficient light intensity. The ratio of chlorophyll a/b in tobacco was low at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, while that of ginseng was low at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/. The relationships between protein and chlorophyll was high positive correlation. However, on 5 days after treatment, ginseng showed negative correlation at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/. Tobacco and ginseng showed different leaf soluble protein patterns on SDS-gel electrophoresis. The molecular weights of two major band were 50 KD and 15 KD in both plants. The major bands in tobacco were thinned at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, while those in ginseng thinned at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/ from 15days after treatment. Disappeared band was 45 KD at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/ in tobacco, but that of ginseng was 47 KD at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/.
The aerosol number concentration have measured with an aerodynamic particle sizer spectrometer(APS) at Gosan site, which is known as background area in Korea, from January to September 2011. The temporal variation and the size distribution of aerosol number concentration have been investigated. The entire averaged aerosol number concentration in the size range 0.25~32.0 ${\mu}m$ is about 252 particles/$cm^3$. The number concentration in small size ranges(${\leq}0.5{\mu}m$) are very higher than those in large size ranges, such as, the number concentration in range of larger than 6.5 ${\mu}m$ are almost zero particles/$cm^3$. The contributions of the number concentration to PM10 and/or PM2.5 are about 34%, 20.1% and 20.4% in the size range 0.25~0.28 ${\mu}m$, 0.28~0.30 ${\mu}m$ and 0.30~0.35 ${\mu}m$, respectively, however, the contributions are below 1% in range of larger than 0.58 ${\mu}m$. The monthly variations in the number concentration in smaller size range(<1.0 ${\mu}m$) are evidently different from the variations in range of larger than 1.0 ${\mu}m$, but the variations are appeared similar patterns in smaller size range(<1.0 ${\mu}m$), also the variations in range of larger than 1.0 ${\mu}m$ are similar too. The diurnal variations in the number concentration for smaller particle(<1.0 ${\mu}m$) are not much, but the variations for larger particle are very evident. Size-fractioned aerosol number concentrations are dramatically decreased with increased particle size. The monthly differences in the size-fractioned number concentrations for smaller size range(<0.7 ${\mu}m$) are not observed, however, the remarkable monthly differences are observed for larger size than 0.7 ${\mu}m$.
In this study numerical computations were performed to predict reacting flow fields of gasification processes of pulverized subbituminous coal in a cylindrical coal gasifier. To check the size effects of particles on flow fields in the gasifier, simulations were performed for five cases with four sizes of particles such as 40 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 60 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 80 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Each case has a unique size of particles with one more case that has evenly mixed four sizes of particles. Predictions showed that the gasification which uses coals of the mixed sizes reveals more preferable gas velocity and temperature distributions than that uses coals of a unique size. Predicted gas temperature at the exit of the gasifier ranged 1,400 to 1580$^{\circ}C$, 1,480 to 1,700$^{\circ}C$, 1,600 to 1740$^{\circ}C$, 1630 to 1790$^{\circ}C$ and 1500 to 1680$^{\circ}C$ for particle sizes of 40 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 60 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 80 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the evenly mixed four sizes, respectively.
This study was conducted to screen herbicidal activity of Korean native plants which could be used for the development of new natural herbicides. Fifty-five plants were collected from Wan and Jeju islands in Korea and their methanol extracts were obtained. Herbicidal activity of methanol extracts were determined by seed bioassay using rape (Brassica napus L.) seedlings. Among fifty-five species, five plants were highly herbicidal ($GR_{50}$ < 1,000 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$): Clematis apiifolia A. P. DC.; (811 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), Euscaphis japonica (THUNB.) KANITZ (867 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), Hibiscus mutabilis L. (988 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), Phyllostachys pubescens MAZEL (778 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), Yucca recurvifolia (857 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$). Twenty-seven plants were shown moderately herbicidal (1,000 < $GR_{50}$ < 2,000 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), however, twenty-three plants were not shown any herbicidal activity.
Aerosol mass size distributions were investigated at 865 m high the of Jirisan national park. A nanosampler cascade impactor was used to collect aerosols. The atmospheric aerosol particles had a unimodal mass size distribution, which peaked at $0.5-1.0{\mu}m$, and a mass aerodynamic diameter of $1.13{\mu}m$. The annual average concentrations of TSP, $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, $PM_1$, $PM_{0.5}$ and $PM_{0.1}$ were $20.9{\mu}g/m^3$, $19.3{\mu}g/m^3$, $14.9{\mu}g/m^3$, $10.7{\mu}g/m^3$, $5.3{\mu}g/m^3$, $1.2{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. TSP concentrations were below $30{\mu}g/m^3$ during the sampling period. On average $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, $PM_1$, $PM_{0.5}$ and $PM_{0.1}$ made up 0.91, 0.70, 0.41, 0.19 and 0.07 of TSP, respectively. The annual average of PM2.5/PM10 ratio was 0.77.

In order to elucidate the current state of marine pollution of heavy metals around major shipyards in Korea, seawater samples were collected at eleven sampling stations and four control stations around 4 major shipyards located in the southeastern coast of Korea in summer 2010, and 6 kinds of metals such as copper(Cu), zinc(Zn), iron(Fe), cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb) and mercury(Hg) in seawater samples were analyzed. The analyses of heavy metals in seawater showed that the mean Cu concentrations in seawater around 4 major shipyards were in the range of $0.817{\sim}1.638{\mu}g/L$ which were lower than Korean environmental standards of $20{\mu}g/L$ for the protection of human health(PHH) and of $3{\mu}g/L$ for short-term protection of marine ecosystem(SPME) but higher than Cu concentration at control station by a factor of up to 2.75. The mean Zn concentrations were in the range of $0.228{\sim}0.567{\mu}g/L$ which were lower than Korean environmental standards of $100{\mu}g/L$ for PHH and $34{\mu}g/L$ for SPME but higher than Zn concentration at control station by a factor of up to 5.91. The mean Fe concentrations were in the range of $3.332{\sim}7.410{\mu}g/L$ which were higher than Fe concentration at control station by a factor of up to 6.75. The mean Cd concentrations were in the range of $0.013{\sim}0.028{\mu}g/L$ which were lower than Korean environmental standards of $10{\mu}g/L$ for PHH and $19{\mu}g/L$ for SPME but higher than Cd concentration at control station by a factor of up to 2.33. The mean Pb concentrations were in the range of $0.007{\sim}0.126{\mu}g/L$ which were lower than Korean environmental standards of $50{\mu}g/L$ for PHH and $7.6{\mu}g/L$ for SPME. The mean Hg concentrations were in the range of $0.002{\sim}0.004{\mu}g/L$ which were lower than Korean environmental standards of $0.5{\mu}g/L$ for PHH and $1.8{\mu}g/L$ for SPME. Although the concentrations of metals such as Cu, Zn and Fe which were used in shipbuilding works were lower than Korean environmental standards for PHH and SPME, the fact that the concentrations of Cu, Zn and Fe at sampling stations around major shipyards were higher than those at control stations implies that the works in shipyards had some effects on marine water quality around shipyards. Therefore, marine environment management such as the prevention and control of the discharge of various pollutants from shipyards is required on national level.
