  • To establish appropriate seed production system in Angelica gigas. Germination of seeds with different bolting years and the growth characters of plants originated from these seeds were investigated. Seed weight from 1st year bolting plant was highest. In germinability according to seeds with different bolting years, seeds from 1st year bolting plant were higher than seeds from 2nd, 3rd years bolting one. In growth characters of plants originated from seeds with different bolting years, as the bolting years became late, root growth increased and top growth decreased, therefore T/R ratio decreased.

  • This study was conducted to examine the bootstrap evaluation of the stem density and biomass expansion factor for Pinus rigida plantations in Korea. The stem density ($g/cm^3$) in less than 20 tree years were 0.460 while more than 21 tree years were 0.456 respectively. Biomass expansion factor of less than 20 years and more than 21 years were 2.013, 1.171, respectively. The results of 100 and 500 bootstrap iterations, stem density ($g/cm^3$) in less than 20 years were 0.456~0.462 while more than 21 years were 0.457~0.456 respectively. Biomass expansion factor of less than 20 years and more than 21 years were 1.990~2.039, 1.173~1.170, respectively. The mean differences between observed biomass factor and average parameter estimates showed within 5 percent differences. The split datasets of younger stands and old stands were compared to the results of bootstrap simulations. The stem density in less than 20 years of mean difference were 0.441~1.049% while more than 21years were 0.123~0.206% respectively. Biomass expansion factor in less than 20 years and more than 21 years were -1.102~1.340%, -0.024~0.215% respectively. Younger stand had relatively higher errors compared to the old stand. The results of stem density and biomass expansion factor using the bootstrap simulation method indicated approximately 1.1% and 1.4%, respectively.

  • This experiment was carried out to compare the change of muscle protein compositions, amino acid compositions of muscle protein, and free amino acid compositions by age of the Israeli strain of common carp, Cyprinus carpio nudus. Protein compositions of the muscle were: sarcoplasmic protein $25.8-27.2\%$, myofibrillar protein $62.3-56.2\%$, residual intracellular protein $9.6-13.2\%$ and stroma $2.3-2.9\%$. In between 1 year and 3 years, there were differences as follows; myofibrillar protein in 1 year was much than 3 years, and other proteins in 3 years were much than 1 year. By SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, sarcoplasmic protein of the samples in 1 year an 3 years were composed of 11 subunits and 10 subunits, respectively. And appeared 210,000 dalton component in 1 year but did not appeared in 3 years. Myofibrillar protein was composed of 23 subunits in both 1 year and 3 years but the differences of subunits by age were not observed. No differences were observed by age in the composition of myofibrillar protein and residual intracellular protein. Amino acid composition of muscle protein in both 1 year and 3 years were no differences to each other, but the contents of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, lysine were higher than other amino acids. The amount of total free amino acid in 1 year was much than in 3 years.

  • Bamboo is one of the major biomass resources that have many advantages such as fast growing, easy cultivation, short rotation, and a relatively lower price. In this study, the anatomical characteristics of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) by age from one-year-old to five-year-old were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Also, the crystalline properties such as relative crystallinity and crystallite width were investigated by an X-ray diffraction method. In one-year-old bamboo xylem, a few vascular bundles showed missing bundle sheath in near the intercellular space. Moreover, one-year-old bamboo had the shortest fiber length and the smallest values in vessel diameter, width of vascular bundle, and thickness of inner layer. One-year-old bamboo also showed the smallest values in the crystallinity and crystallite width. Near epidermis samples had longer fiber length and greater vascular bundle spacing than near pith samples. Relative crystallinity and crystallite width near the epidermis were also higher than near the pith. This study revealed significant differences in qualitative and quantitative anatomical characteristics between one-year-old and two-year- or more old Moso bamboos. It is concluded that the structural differences by bamboo age can be used to differentiate the characteristics of juvenile and mature bamboo.

  • To greatly decrease bolting rate and deterioration of root quality, seeds of Angelica gigas had sown and grown several month earlier than traditional seedtime. Roots were harvested in the middle of November in same year. Roots were devided to several parts such a fune root, secondary root, stele and cortex of main root. We ditermined and compared with the major constisuents contained in each parts of 1 and 2 year old roots. Among each parts of root, the amount of constituents in the fine root and cortex were much higher than those in stele of main root. Content of decursin and decursinol angelate was higher 6.5% in 2 year old root than 4.8% in 1 year old root and their component ratio showed 10:7.5 in 1 year old root and 10:6.0 in 2 year old root, respectively. But merits as a material of oriental medicine for 1 year old root that cultivated by early short-time growing seedling were generally acknowledged.

  • The black pine bast scale, Matsucoccus thunbergianae, causes severe damage to the black pines of southern coastal areas. It has one generation a year, coming out of the pine bark to mate a and lay eggs from early March to early May. Especially, its peak time is from late March to m mid-April. The host plants were found to be 7 species, Pinus thunbergii, P. strobus, P. taeda, P. b banksiana, P. massoniana, P. taiwannesis, and P. densiflora. The percentage of damaged black p pine by the age were 0.8% for I-year old ones, 3.7% for 4-6 years, 5.2% for 7-9 years, 9.3% f for 10-12 years, 8.1% for 13-15 years, 7.8% for 16-18 years, 6.7% for 19-21 years, 3.3% for 2 22-24 years, 1.9% for 25-27 years, and 1.1 % for 28 years. The highest rate of damage happened to 7 -20 years old trees, whereas the highest rate of damage upon branches happened to 6 6-7 years old ones. Finally, as far as the trunk is concerned, the damages proceeded from the m middle parts of the trunk, whose branches were alive up to the top. The rates of damage s spread in pure forest/mixed forest area were turned out to be 81.3/52.5% in Koheung, 80.3/ 5 58.1 % in Haenam, and 76.3/48.5% in Muan. That is, the damage rate was higher in the pure f forest areas than the mixed forest ones. The higher the density of trees beyond 20 trees per m 100$m^2$, the higher the damage rate was.

  • The study has carried out to investigate the possibility of application of the emerged-peduncle at the 2 year -old plant for ginseng breeding. In the 2 and 3 year-old plant, growth habits of aerial parts of plants that had the inflorescence showed higher vigor in leaf length, number of leaves, rate of fruitage and fertility, and roots yield than those of non-inflorescence. Generally, characteristics such as stem diameter, stem length, leaf length and number of leaves showed highly significant positive-correlation with root weight and fruitage. The trends of characteristics of plant that has inflorescence at the 2 year-old plant was shown one-year faster pattern than the plant that has non-inflorescence. As these results, selection of the plants which have inflorescence at the 2 year-old plant will provide valuable aid for ginseng breeding.

  • Six local strains collected in Korea and one cultivar (Samdo) introduced from Japan were applied for comparative cultivation to investigate growth characteristics, root yield potentials and saikosaponin contents of root in Bupleurum falcatum L. The one and two year old plants of the native local strains flowered in August 2~3 and July 16~18, respectively, whereas Samdo was late flowering type, being delayed by 18~32days and sustained the growth of above ground parts to the end of November. All the native local strains have similiar characteristics but Samdo was completely different in plant and root type. Local strain collected from Chunchon showed better in growth and root characteristics, consequently resulting high yield of dry roots and saikosaponin contents in both one and two year old plants. The average yield of two year cultivation system was 2.6 times high as 105Kg /10a, compared with that of one year.
