  • Eosin Y is used a colorant and dye but eosin Y is harmful toxic substance. In this study, the adsorption characteristics of granular activated carbon have been investigated for the adsorption of eosin dye dissolved in water. The effects of initial dye concentration, contact time, pH and temperature on adsorption of eosin by a fixed amount of activated carbon have been studied in batch adsorber and fixed bed. The adsorptivity of activated carbon for eosin Y were largely improved by pH control. When the pH was 3 in the sample, the eosin Y could be removed 99% of initial concentration (10 mg/L). The adsorption equilibrium data are successfully fitted to the Freundlich isotherm equation in the temperature range from 293 to 333 K. The estimated values of k and ${\beta}$ are 19.56-134.62, 0.442-0.678, respectively. The effects of the operation conditions of the fixed bed on the breakthrough curve were investigated. When the inlet eosin Y concentration is increased from 10 to 30 mg/L, the corresponding adsorption breaktime appears to decrease from 470 to 268 min at bed height of 3 cm and a constant flow rate of 2 g/min. When the initial eosin Y flow rate is increased from 1 to 3 g/min, the corresponding adsorption breaktime appears to decrease from 272 to 140 min at bed height of 3 cm and inlet concentration of 10 mg/L. Also, breaktime increased with increasing bed height at flow rate of 2 g/min and inlet concentration of 10 mg/L. And length of adsorption zone showed similar patterns.

  • Physical adsorption on a silica gel(pore size of 80 nm, particle size of $10{\mu}m$)has been studied for binary mixture of acetone diluted in $CO_2$ by use of a FTIR transmission technique and we have compared the result of FTIR transmission technique with that of a chromatographic technique. Measurements were made at 313.2 K and under pressures up to 15MPa. As the pressure increases from 0.1MPa, the IA(Integral Absorbance) of the hydrogen-bonded OH groups interacting with acetone and adsorbed amount by use of a chromatographic technique increases at first, and reaches a maximum at a pressure below the critical pressure of $CO_2$, and then the intensities decrease gradually with increasing pressure. It is found that the pressure dependency of the chromatographic isotherm is a little larger than that of spectroscopic isotherm in the supercritical fluid region. This difference might be attributable to the weaker van der Waals force and relatively stronger hydrogen-bonding force influencing the adsorption of acetone on the sllica gel. The unique spectroscopic characteristics of amine group which vibrational frequencies of hydroxyl groups on the silica gel surface shift downward to about $1300cm^{-1}$ were measured from experimental result of triethylamine diluted in $CO_2$ or $N_2$.

  • We investigated possible application of waste ferrite in treating Cd and Pb in wastewater. Adsorption of Cd and Pb on Mn-Ferrite are influenced by several controlling factors such as contact time, heavy metal concentrations, pH and temperature. Both Cd and Pb achieved adsorption equilibrium within 5 minutes. Based upon this kinetic data, 24 hours of contact time was allowed for other experiment. The adsorption of Cd and Pb was high at high pH and high ion concentrations. The reaction was also affected by temperature. Adsorption isotherms fits well with the Freundlich isotherm equation. pH is the main controlling factor in Cd, Pb adsorption on the Mn-ferrite. Cd showed S type adsorption curve while Pb showed sorption edges, depending on the Pb concentrations.

  • The four natural zeolites collected in Pohang and Gyeongju area, Kyungsangbuk-do, Korea, were characterized by XRD, XRF, DTA, TGA, and CEC analysis. The primary species of these zeolite are heulandite, modenite, illite, and illite in Kuryongpo (Ku), Pohang (Po), Yangbuk-A (Ya-A), and Yangbuk-B (Ya-B) samples. The XRF analysis showed that the four zeolites contain Si, Al, Na, K, Mg, Ca, and Fe. Cation exchange capacity of Kuryongpo (Ku) zeolite was the highest compared to other zeolites. The adsorption capacities of Cs and Sr in the four natural zeolites were compared at $25^{\circ}C$. On the basis of adsorption data Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model were confirmed. The equilibrium process was descried well by Langmuir isotherm model. This study shows that Ya-A zeolite is the most efficient for the $Cs^+$ and $Sr^{2+}$ ion adsorption compared to the other natural zeolites.

  • Characteristics of Amberlite IRN 77, a cation exchange resin, and the mechanisms of its adsorption equilibria with Co(II), Ni(II), Cr(III) and Fe(III) ions were investigated for the application of the demineralizing process in the primary coolant system of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The optimum dosage of the resin for removal of the dissolved metal ions at $200mgL^{-1}$ was 0.6 g for 100 mL solution. Most of each metal ion was adsorbed onto the resin in an hour from the start of the reaction. Each metal adsorption onto the resin could be well represented by Langmuir isotherms. However, in the case of Fe(III) adsorption, continuous formation of Fe-oxide or -hydroxide and its subsequent precipitation inhibited the completion of the equilibrium between the metal and the adsorbent Cobalt(II) and Ni(II), which have an equivalent electrovalence, were adsorbed to the resin with a similar adsorption amount when they coexisted in the solution. However, Cr(III) added to the solution competitively replaced Co(II) and Ni(II) which were already adsorbed onto the resin, resulting in desorption of these metals into the solution. The result was likely due to a higher adsorption affinity of Cr(III) than Co(II) and Ni(II). This implies that the interactively competitive adsorption of multi-cations onto the resin should be fully considered for an efficient operation of the demineralizing ion exchange process in the primary coolant system.

  • In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/graphene oxide (GO)/iron oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic microgels were prepared using a microfluidic approach and the dye adsorption capacity of the microgels was confirmed. The adsorption capacity (qe) of the gels was evaluated by varying the dye concentration, pH, and contact time with the microgels. The dyes used in this work were methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and malachite green (MG), and microgels showed the highest adsorption capacity (191.1 mg/g) in methylene blue. The microgels exhibited the highest adsorption capacity in the dye aqueous solution at pH 10 due to the presence of atomic nitrogen ions (N+) on the dye molecules. The adsorption isotherm studies revealed that the Langmuir isotherm is the best fit isotherm model for the dye adsorption on the microgels, indicative of monolayer adsorption. The kinetic analysis exhibited that the pseudo-second order model fits better than the pseudo-first order model, confirming that the adsorption process is chemisorption. In addition, the magnetic microgels showed good reusability and recovery efficiency. It was confirmed that the adsorption capacity of the gels maintains more than 70% of the initial capacity after 5 times of cycle experiments.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characterization of iron oxide nanotubes (INTs) by anodization method and applied adsorption isotherms and kinetic models for phosphate adsorption. SEM analysis was conducted to examine the INTs surface formation. Further XRD and XPS analysis were performed to observe the crystal structure of INTs before and after phosphate adsorption. AFM analysis was conducted to determine of Fe foil surface before and after anodization. Phosphate stock solution for adsorption experiment was prepared by $KH_2PO_4$. The batch experiment was conducted using 20 ml phosphate stock solution and $40cm^3$ of INTs in 50 ml conical tube. Adsorption isotherms were applied Langmuir and Freundlich models for adsorption equilibrium test of INTs. Pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were applied for interpretation of adsorption rate by reaction time. The determination coefficient ($R^2$) values of Langmuir and Freundlich models were 0.9157 and 0.8876 respectively.

  • In this work, ruthenium substituted SBA-15's(Ru-SBA15's) of various Si/Ru ratios were prepared using a non-ionic triblock copolymer surfactant, $EO_{20}PO_{70}EO_{20}$, as template. We investigated the nitrogen or oxygen adsorption/desorption behaviors of the Ru-SBA-15's for their future applications as catalysts or selective adsorbents, etc. The pore size of the Ru-SBA-15's was determined by both the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda(BJH)($D_{BJH}$) and the Broekhoff-de Boer analysis with a Frenkel-Halsey-Hill isotherm(BdB-FFF) method($D_{BdB-FHH}$). The $D_{BJH}$ and $D_{BdB-FHH}$ of the Ru-SBA-15 having 50/1 ratio of Si/Ru were 3.9 nm and 4.7 nm, respectively. The transmission electron microscope(TEM) image of the Ru-SBA 15 of the Si/Ru mole ratio of 50 showed that the pore size is 4.7 nm, which is consistent with the $N_2$ adsorption results with the BdB-FHH method. The surface area of pores form oxygen adsorption/desorption isotherm was higher than that from the nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) method, which were respectively $612.7m^2/g$, and $573.3m^2/g$. X-ray diffraction(XRD) patterns and TEM analyses showed that the mesoporous materials possess well-ordered hexagonal arrays.

  • In this work, a static volumetric method was experimentally implemented to measure the adsorption isotherm of hydrogen and methane by the activated carbon. The equilibrium data of stationary phase and mobile phase were correlated into the Langmuir, Freundlich, Langmuir-Freundlich, and Toth isotherms, respectively. In addition, the comparison between prediction and experimental data was made. By a nonlinear regression analysis, the experimental parameters in the equilibrium isotherms were estimated and compared. Then, the linear and quadratic equations for pressure and temperature to adsorption amounts were expressed. The adsorption amounts were increased with the pressure increase and the temperature decrease.

  • In this study, a electrostatic filter which could be applicable to road environment was developed and evaluated in adsorption capacity. The evaluation were performance for removal by particle size and adsorption amount by pressure using ASERAE 52.1 and 52.2. The range of size for removal test was $0.3{\mu}m{\sim}10.0{\mu}m$ which had 12 steps. The filter showed 91.3% removal efficiency from $2.5{\mu}m$ and under the size, average 53.5% proportional to decreasing size value. The weight removal was 96.7% from 22.6 mmaq, initial pressure to 35 mmaq, end pressure with $715.9g/m^2$, the adsorption amount. The shape of isotherm was expressed as Langmuir's one. After washing saturated filter with dust to end pressure, the initial pressure and adsorption amount of the filter showed a light drop with no removal efficiency decline.
