The adsorptive removal of organic sulfur compounds including tert-butylmercaptane(TBM), tetrahydrothiophene(THT) and dimethylsulfide(DMS) in methane was investigated over NaY and copper-exchanged NaY(CuNaY) zeolites at 303 K and atmospheric pressure. In the ternary adsorption system, the preferential adsorption of THT over other sulfur compounds on NaY and the concurrent adsorption of all sulfur compounds on CuNaY were achieved, which could be explained by the breakthrough curve, the temperature-programmed desorption, and the apparent activation energy for desorption. The sulfur uptake capacity of CuNaY(2.90~3.20 mmol/g) was much higher than that of NaY(0.70~0.90 mmol/g). A comparative study indicated that the $Cu^{1+}$ sites and acidity of CuNaY were probably responsible for the strong interaction with sulfur atom and high sulfur uptake abilities.

Adsorption/desorption characteristics of low concentration methylethylketone(MEK) and toluene vapors in beds packed with activated carbon fibers(ACF) was investigated. Performance of ACF adsorption was characterized by the equilibrium capacity, time to reach equilibrium and desorption efficiency. Experiments were carried out to define the effect of operation variables, such as feed concentration, flow rate, moisture content and bed height. The breakthrough time was shorten with the increase of temperature, flow rate and feed concentration. In addition, an increase of packed height of adsorbents lengthen the breakthrough time. The ACF loaded with MEK and toluene was satisfactorily regenerated by programed heating. It is observed that MEK is more easily removed than toluene at below temperature of $150^{\circ}C$.

This research was focused on the selective separation of $CO_2$ or $CH_4$ from mixture of these gases, by controlling the size of pore or pore gate. Pitch based activated carbon fibers(ACF) were used as adsorbents. The size of pore gate was controlled by the molecule having similar size to that of pore opening. After the adsorption of adsorbate on pore surface, planar molecules such as benzene and naphthalene covered the pore gate. The slow release of adsorbate from the pores covered by planar molecules makes apertures between planar molecules covering pore gate and this structure can be fixed by rapid pyrolysis. The control of pore gate using benzene as covering molecules could not accomplished due to the simultaneous volatilization of benzene and adsorbate$(CO_2)$ caused by similar temperatures of benzene volatilization and adsorbate desorption. Therefore we replaced benzene with naphthalene looking for the stability at a $CO_2$ desorption temperature. The naphthalene molecule was adsorbed on the ACF up to 15% of ACF weight and showed no desorption until $100^{\circ}C$, indicating that the molecule could be used as a good cover molecule. Naphthalene could cover almost all the pore gate, reducing BET surface area from 753 $m^2/g$ to 0.7 $m^2/g$. A mixed gas$(CO_2:CH_4=50:50)$ was adsorbed on the naphthalene treated OG-7A ACF. The amount of $CO_2$ adsorption increased with total pressure, whileas thai of $CH_4$ was not so much influenced on the pressure, indicating that $CO_2$ made more compounds on the ACF surface along with total pressure increase. The most $CO_2$ and the least $CH_4$ were adsorbed in the condition of 0.4 atm, resulting in the highly pure $CH_4$ left in ACF.

This study was conducted to establish the adsorption-desorption mechanism and the optimum condition of chromatographic operation for separations of heavy rare earth elements (Gd, Tb, Dy) using a p507-containing resin. By employing Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm together with pseudo first and second order kinetics, absorption-desorption reaction mechanism was investigated. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm was applied under assumption that adsorption reaction occurs in form of monolayer, and because the result was identical to the assumption, now we know adsorption of heavy rare earth elements occurs in form of monolayer. Concerning the pseudo first and second order kinetic, the pseudo second order seemed to be more suitable to represent heavy rare earth element adsorption mechanism. By using the extraction chromatography to separate heavy rare earth elements, ${\alpha}^{Tb}_{Gd}=1.24$, and ${\alpha}^{Dy}_{Tb}=1.03$ were confirmed in eluent HCl 0.25 M which indicates almost perfect separations of three elements. Furthermore, as concentrations of eluent became higher, the resolution value decreased and the elution area got shortened.
In order to investigate the effects of pH and organic matter content on cadmium adsorption and exchangeable cations desorption in soils, the adsorption isotherms of cadmium and the desorption isotherms of calcium and magnesium on four New jersey soils at four pH values were plotted, and the cadmium partition coefficients (Kd) were also calculated. The slopes of cadmium adsorption isotherms dramatically increased with increasing solution pH. Judging from Langmuir adsorption equations, the maximum adsorption quantities(b) of cadmium at high pH values were much greater than those at low pH values for the same soil. The partition coefficients increased greatly with increasing solution pH. The slopes of regression equations between partition coefficients and pH values were steep in the order of the organic matter content of the soils. The correlation coefficients (r2) between partition coefficient and organic matter content for soils. The correlation coefficients (r2) between partition coefficient and organic matter content for $1\times10^{-4}$M increased from 0.3027 at pH 4.0 to 0.9964 at pH 8.5 and from 0.2093 at pH4.0 at 0.9657 at pH 8.5 for$2\times10^{-4}$M ${Cd(NO_3)}_2$. The desorption quantities of calcium and magnesium decreased with increasing solution pH and increased with- increasing cadmium adsorption.
In this study, hybrid adsorbents (SS) were prepared by mixing spent coffee grounds (SCG) and sericite, a kind of clay minerals, to adsorb Pb(II) from an aqueous solution. In FT-IR analyses, the main functional groups of SS adsorbents were O-H, C=O and C-N groups. The specific surface area, cation exchange capacity and the pore diameter of SS were larger than those of using SCG and sericite. Formation conditions of the SS adsorbent were the optimum pyrolysis temperature of $300^{\circ}C$, SCG : sericite ratio of 8 : 2, and particle size of 0.3 mm. Langmuir adsorption isotherm was more suitable than Freundlich one, and the maximum adsorption capacity was reached 44.42 mg/g. As a result of the adsorption thermodynamic analysis, the adsorption of Pb(II) onto SS was the physical adsorption and exothermic process in nature. The regeneration of SS adsorbent using distilled water showed 88~92% recovery and the active site of SS adsorbent decreased with increasing the reuse cycle time. As a result, SS adsorbent showed that it can be used to remove Pb(II) easily, inexpensively and efficiently without any pre-treatment from aqueous solutions.
In this study, we have investigated the preparation of mixed bead and fiber type hybrid ion-exchanger for recovering nickel ion from plating rinse water. There was little dependence of adsorption capacity for nickel ion on the mixing ratio of resin type and fiber type of ion exchangers. However, it increased with increasing the resin content in the mixed bed. It was shown that the data Langmuir and Freundlich's adsorption isotherm model were well fitted to the linear. Affinity between the functional groups in the ion exchanger and nickel ion in the process was confirmed. The pressure drop decreased with increasing the number of stage in the multistage bed, but it increased with increasing the resin content in the mixing bed. The initial breakthrough time in the multistage bed was short due to the increase of number of stage in the continuous process. It was found that the final breakthrough time of the multistage bed was little changed. The breakthrough time decreased with increasing the amount of fibrous ion exchanger in the mixed bed. The maximum adsorption capacities of the mixed and multistage beds were 2.51 meq/g and 2.69 meq/g, respectively. The desorption time for the nickel ion with $1N H_2SO_4$ solution was lower than 10 minutes and the yield of desorption was greater than 98 percent.
