  • The water leak in water-cooled generator stator windings can generate the serious accidents such as insulation breakdown and it brings a generator to the unexpected sudden outage. Accordingly, it is important to diagnose the water absorption of them for the effective operation of power plant. Especially, the capacitance value which is measured for diagnosis is very small so the special diagnosis methods like stochastic theory are needed. KEPRI developed the water absorption test equipment and diagnosis technology for them. The developed diagnosis technology is applied to the real system and the results of water absorption test for stator windings are agreed to them of water leak test.

  • Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites are increasingly being used in a variety of industry applications, such as aircraft, automobiles, and ships because of their high specific stiffness and high specific strength. Aircraft are exposed to high temperatures and high humidity for a long duration during flights. CFRP materials of the aircraft can absorb water, which could decrease the adhesion strength of these materials and cause their volumes to change with variation in internal stress. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the characteristics of CFRP composites under actual conditions from the viewpoint of aircraft safety. In this study air-coupled ultrasonic testing (ACUT) was applied to the evaluation of water absorption properties of CFRP composites. CFRP specimens were fabricated and immersed in distilled water at $75^{\circ}C$ for 30, 60, and 120 days, after which their ultrasonic images were obtained by ACUT. The water absorption properties were determined by quantitatively analyzing the changes in ultrasonic signals. Further, shear strength was applied to the specimens to verify the changes in their mechanical properties for water absorption.

  • In order to evaluate corrosion resistance of steel fiber-reinforced concrete, accelerated chloride migration and surface resistivity tests were conducted. In addition air content of fresh concrete, compressive strength and water absorption were measured for investigating fundamental characteristics of concrete. Two different water-cement ratios(0.44, 0.5) and three steel fiber contents(0.25%, 0.5%, 1%) were considered as variables. Note that all specimens cast with same compaction work. As a results, corrosion resistance decreased as steel fiber contents increased regardless of water-cement ratio when the concrete was compacted with same amount of work done. However, for concrete with same steel fiber content, the lower water-cement ratio showed the better corrosion resistance. It is found that enhancement of fluidity and enough compaction should be done for corrosion resistance of SFRC.

  • A bendable electronic module is developed. In this module, thin silicon electronic chips are embedded in a polymer-based encapsulating adhesive between flexible copper-clad polyimide layers. During the qualification test of a harshly thermal-hygroscopic complex loading condition, delaminations occur inside the module layers. A finite element model is developed for the module. To investigate the effect of hygroscopic stress on delamination, the results of the thermal and thermal-hygroscopic loads are compared. The analysis results reveal that the hygroscopic effect more strongly affects delamination than does the thermal effect. The potential failure mechanisms of the module are investigated based on the stress analysis.

  • Decrease of strength in composite material is generally caused by water absorption. It makes fracture of material, and loss of money or human lives. The objective of this study is to investigate the causes of decrease in strength by water absorption. Mechanism of water absorption was supposed as three steps. This mechanism is consisted of absorption into resin, absorption between resin and surface treatment agent, and delamination between fiber and resin. Conditions of test were supplied differently; kinds of fiber and resin, immersion time etc. Both of reversible reaction and irreversible reaction occurred simultaneously. Most of decrease in strength was finished at 2.5% water absorption, and the strength was recovered. At 4% water absorption, most of decrease was caused by irreversible reaction, therefore, there was a tendency not to be recovered in strength.

  • Knowledge of the moisture sorption properties of a material is essential for optimal material development and analysis of the delamination failure caused by vapor pressure at the interlayer during the manufacturing process of integrated packaging devices. In this paper, both temperature dependent absorption and desorption properties according to temperature and humidity model are parameterized and the effects of water activities and temperature are discussed. The activation energy obtained from the parameterized diffusivity determines the acceleration factor for the equivalency of moisture sorption levels, which enables the effect of moisture diffusivity on the equivalent elapsed testing time required for evaluating the reliable life time to be estimated. The acceleration factor evaluated at the reliability testing standard of the flexible packaging module is exampled.

  • The main objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the effect of adhesive thickness and environmental conditions on the failure and strength of sandwich-to-laminate bonded joints. Three different adhesive thicknesses (t=0.2, 2 and 4 mm) and two different environmental conditions were considered. Environmental conditions include the RTD(room temperature and dry condition) and ETW(elevated temperature and wet condition). Test results show as the adhesive thickness increases from 0.2 mm to 2 and 4 mm, the joint strength decreases 16 and 30%, respectively. Regarding the effect of environmental conditions, except for one case, the joint strength in the ETW conditions turned out to be 12% higher than those in the RTD conditions. In the joints with adhesive thickness of 0.2 mm, remarkable difference from RTD condition was not found.

  • In this study, damaged composite laminates were repaired by a stepped patch repair method using halloysite nanotube(HNT) and milled carbon(MC) reinforced composite materials with different amount of the particles. And the mechanical and structural effects of the particles on the interface between the damaged and repair surfaces were analyzed. At this time, after exposing them to a harsh environment of high temperature and humidity for a long time, the recovery rate of the material properties relative to the material forming the damaged plate was compared. As a result, at $70^{\circ}C$ high temperature distilled water, the hygroscopicity of the HNT/GFRP composites was significantly different from that of the MC/GFRP composites. Especially, 0.5, 1 wt. % HNT was added, the moisture absorption rate was the lowest and this was the factor that contributed to the mechanical strength increase. On the other hand, MC showed a high hygroscopic resistance only with a small amount, and the strength was different according to the action direction of the load, and the addition amount was also different.
