Moment Equations for Long-Span Soil-Steel Box Culverts (장지간 지중강판 박스컬버트의 휨모멘트 식)

  • This paper studies the moment equations in the 2000 Canadian highway bridge code(CHBDC) for soil-steel box structures, which are applicable to the span less than 8m. Finite element analyses carried out for soil-steel box structures having spans of 3-12m using the deep corrugated steel plates under three construction stages; backfill up to the crown, backfill up to the cover depth, and live loading. The coefficients of moment equations are newly proposed based on the results of numerous finite element analyses considering various design variables, such as span length, soil depth, backfill conditions. The validity of the proposed coefficients in the moment equations of the 2000 CHBDC is investigated by the comparison with the existing coefficients and numerical results of finite element analyses. The comparisons show that the moments of the 2000 CHBDC give good predictions for the span less than 8m, but underestimate for the span greater than 8m, whereas the proposed moments give good estimates of numerical results for the spans of 3-12m.

Deflection Calculation Based on Stress-Strain Curve for Concrete in RC Members (콘크리트 응력-변형률 관계에 기반한 철근콘크리트 부재의 처짐 산정)

  • The concrete structural design provisions in Korea are based on ultimate strength design. Up to service load stage, it is assumed a linear stress-strain relation, but there is no stress-strain relationship for a concrete material from service load stage to limat state. According to the current provisions, an independent method is provided for the each calculation of deflection and crack width. In EC2 provisions based on limit state design, however, a stress-strain relationship of concrete is provided. Thereby, it is able to calculate a strength as well as a deflection directly from concrete stress-strain relationship. In this paper the moment-curvature relationship is directly calculated from a material law using equilibrium and compatibility conditions. Then strength and deflection are formulated. These results are compared with the values from the current provisions in Korea. From the results, the deflection based on a moment-curvature relationship is well agreed with experimental results and it is appeared that the deflection after the yielding of steel is also possible.

Investigation on the Effective Moment of Inertia of Reinforced Concrete Flexural Members Under Service Load (사용하중 상태에서 철근콘크리트 휨부재의 유효 단면2차모멘트에 대한 고찰)

  • The approaches in many design codes for the estimation of the deflection of flexural reinforced concrete (RC) members utilize the concept of the effective moment of inertia which considers the reduction of flexural rigidity of RC beams after cracking. However, the effective moment of inertia in design codes are primarily based on the ratio of maximum moment and cracking moment of beam subjected to loading without proper consideration on many other possible influencing factors such as span length, member end condition, sectional size, loading geometry, materials, sectional properties, amount of cracks and its distribution, and etc. In this study, therefore, an experimental investigation was conducted to provide fundamental test data on the effective moment of inertia of RC beams for the evaluation of flexural deflection, and to develop a modified method on the estimation of the effective moment of inertia based on test results. 14 specimens were fabricated with the primary test parameters of concrete strength, cover thickness, reinforcement ratio, and bar diameters, and the effective moments of inertia obtained from the test results were compared with those by design codes, existing equations, and the modified equation proposed in this study. The proposed method considered the effect of the length of cracking region, reinforcement ratio, and the effective concrete area per bar on the effective moment of inertia, which estimated the effective moment of inertia more close to the test results compared to other approaches.

Bending Moment Calculation Method and Optimum Element Size for Finite Element Analysis with Continuum Elements (연속체 요소를 사용한 유한요소해석의 휨 모멘트 계산 방법 및 최적의 요소 크기)

  • When designing a reinforced concrete member using nonlinear finite element analysis results, the bending moment at the critical section should be calculated. In this paper, a bending moment calculation method using the results of reinforced concrete finite element analysis(FEA) using continuum elements is presented and the optimum element size according to the order of the displacement function of the finite element is proposed. The bending moments calculated by integrating the stresses from the FEA are compared with the bending moments calculated using the static equilibrium conditions. In the method of integrating the stress, both the stress due to the reinforcing bar and the stress of the concrete are considered. In addition, various factors affecting the accuracy of the stresses calculated by the FEA were analyzed and the influence of the displacement function and the element size was verified. If the purpose of the analysis is to roughly observe the behavior of the members, it is appropriate to use the first order displacement function and the element size should be about 25% of the section height of the analytical model. When the bending moment of a member with high accuracy is required, it is suggested that the secondary displacement function be used and the element size be 12.5%.

Nonlinear Moment-Curvature Relations and Numerical Structural Analysis of High-Strength PSC Flexural Members (고강도 PSC 휨부재의 비선형 모멘트-곡률 관계와 전산구조해석)

  • A methods to calculate non-linear moment-curvature relations of high-strength PSC flexural members for numerical analysis has been proposed. The moment-curvature relations were calculated with assumptions of design codes and by the layer method. The results of the proposed procedures for moment-curvature relations and numerical analysis were compared with those of pre-existing tests. The absorption energy rate of the design codes was about 30% larger than that of the layer method. The ultimate load and the external work of the layer method were 90% and 85% of those of tests, respectively The ultimate load of the strength design method was 97% of that of tests, but the external work was over-estimated with 122%. The ultimate load and external work by the proposed equation of the CEB-FIP Model Code were 113% and 173% of those of tests, respectively. It show that the use of ultimate strain of 0.0035 should be over-estimated for high-strength concrete. The procedure of non-linear numerical analysis of this research could be stably simulated the behavior of concrete flexural members until the ultimate state, and calculate results of the load-deflection relation and cracking pattern were very similar with those of tests.

Analytical Study on Ductility Index of Reinforced Concrete Flexural Members (철근 콘크리트 휨부재의 연성지수에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • One of the most important design concept for reinforced concrete structures is to achieve a ductile failure mode, and also moment redistribution for economic design is possible in case that adequate ductility is provided. Flexural ductility index is, therefore, used as a reference for possibility of moment redistribution as well as for prediction of flexural behavior of designed R.C. structures. Ductility index equations, however, provide approximate values due to the linear concrete compressive stress assumption at the tension steel yielding state. Theoretically more exact ductility index is calculated by a numerical analysis with the realistic stress-strain curves for concrete and steel to be compared with the result from tire ductility index equations. Variation of ductility index for the selected variables and the reasonable maximum tension steel ratio for doubly reinforced section are investigated. A moment-curvature curve model is also proposed for future research on moment redistribution.

Flexural Strength of PHC Pile Reinforced with Infilled Concrete, Transverse and Longitudinal Reinforcements (내부충전 콘크리트와 횡보강 및 축방향 철근으로 보강된 PHC 말뚝의 휨강도)

  • The pre-tensioned spun high strength concrete (PHC) pile has poor load carrying capacity in shear and flexure, while showing excellent axial load bearing capacity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the flexural performance of the concrete-infilled composite PHC (ICP) pile which is the PHC pile reinforced with infilled concrete, transverse and longitudinal reinforcement for the improvement of shear and flexural load carrying capacity. The ICP pile specimen was designed to make allowable axial compression and bending moment higher load bearing capacity than those determined through the investigation of abutment design cases. The allowable axial compression and bending moment of the ICP pile was obtained using the program developed for calculating the axial compression - bending moment interaction. Then, ICP pile specimens were manufactured and flexural tests were performed. From the test results, it was found that the maximum bending moment of the ICP pile was approximately 45% higher than that of the PHC pile and the safety factor of ICP pile design was about 4.5 when the allowable bending moment was determined to be 25% of the flexural strength.

Finite Difference Numerical Solutions for Isotropic Rectangular Thin Elastic Plates with Three Edges Clamped and the Other Free (등방성 직사각형의 3변 고정 1변 자유 얇은 탄성판에 대한 유한차분법의 수치해)

  • In order to calculate bending moments of rectangular plates with three edges clamped the other free subjected to both a uniform load and a triangular load, a finite difference equation for the non-dimensional governing equation are presented and numerical solutions with different aspect ratios and/or number of grid points are analyzed. The finite difference solutions are obtained by use of grid points up to 11,520 and the optimum grid points according to aspect ratios of the plate are presented as well. The obtained numerical solutions are shown to satisfy the given x moment boundary condition at the free edge, which can not be satisfied in Levy's analytical solutions and peculiar behaviour of the calculated moments is observed around the corners between the free edge and fixed ones. The numerical solutions of bending moments subjected to both a uniform load and a triangular load are compared with the corresponding analytical solutions which are shown in very good agreement on the solution domain except the neighborhood of the free edge.

A Comparative Study on Influence Line of Curved I-Girder Grid Bridge with Constant Cross Section and Variable Cross Section (등·변단면 I-형 곡선격자형교의 영향선에 관한 비교연구)

  • In order to determine the maximum shear force, the maximum bending moment, the maximum pure torsion. the maximum warping torsion, and the maximum bimoment for the curved girder grid bridges, it is important to find the location of live load applied to the curved girder grid bridges, so that the influence line can be estimated. The fundamental differential equation concerning the behaviour with warping effects for the curved girder is developed by Vlasov. In this paper, the influence line of shear force, bending moment, pure torsion, warping torsion, and bimoment due to unit vertical load and unit torsional moment for curved I-girder grid bridges with variable and constant cross section are obtained by using the finite difference method and compared with respectively.
