  • In this paper, "Gyeonggi-Do household weekend travel survey" is used in order to analyze activity participation and travel behavior for the people who go to work on Saturday(workers) and those who do not go to work(non-workers). To find out causal relationship between activity participation and travel behavior, Structural Equation Models are developed. Examination of the causal relationship between activity participation and travel behavior identifies three stages. Firstly, subsistence activities and leisure activities are generated. Secondly, each activity participation produces trip volumes and travel times. Finally, the sum of travel times forms trip volumes. Looking into the activity participation stages for the workers, their subsistence activies have a tendency to take place first, and leisure activities usually follow. Non-workers generate more simple trip chains and most of their first stage activities are leisure related.

  • In a previous article, for analyzing a stochastic activity network, Cho proposed a method for estimating the moments (mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis) of the project completion time under the assumption that the durations of activities are independently and normally distributed. Developed in the present article is a method for estimating those moments for stochastic activity networks which allow any type of distributions for activity durations. The proposed method uses the moment matching approach to discretize the distribution function of activity duration, and then a discrete inverse-transform method to determine activity durations to be used for calculating the project completion time. The proposed method can be easily applied to large-sized activity networks, and computationally more efficient than Monte Carlo simulation, and its accuracy is comparable to that of Monte Carlo simulation.

  • This study analyzes factors that affect average daily travel time budgets, using the Time Use Survey data from 1999 to 2014 in Seoul. We first developed multivariate regression models for travel time from each year, considering demographic and socio-economic variables as well as non-home activity time. The model results showed that household and personal characteristics and non-home activities significantly affect travel time, and their effects are different over time. In addition, we developed seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) models for time allocation for non-home activity and travel, considering their correlations, and explanatory variables were compared over time. Overall, demographic and socio-economic variables significantly affect travel time as well as non-home activity time.

  • For a PERT network the sensitivity analyses are valuable tools for effective management and control of a project. In a previous article, a method was developed for the sensitivity analysis of the expected project completion time (${\mu}_{T}$) with respect to the expected duration of an activity (${\mu}_{i}$) under the assumption that the durations of activities are independent and normally distributed. In the present article, a method is presented for the sensitivity analysis of ${\mu}_{T}$ with respect to ${\mu}_{i}$ when the durations of activities are independent and follow discrete distributions, which utilizes the previous sensitivity analysis method with modifications. The accuracy of the proposed method is assessed using various example PERT networks, and the computational results indicate that the accuracy is comparable to that of direct Monte Carlo simulation.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the workday leisure time of dual-income fathers and mothers with preschool children. Data were gathered from the Statistics Korea Life Time Surveys from 2004(y1) and 2019(y2) (n=2,697). Life time was composed of three types(inevitable time, compulsory time, and leisure time) and leisure time was categorized into 11 activities(voluntarism, participation, social relationships, religion, rituals, culture and tourism, sports, game and play, media, rest, and others) to investigate gender differences and time effects. The major results were as follows: First, both working fathers and mothers with preschool children spent less inevitable time, more compulsory time, and less leisure time, than other adult group. Second, fathers spent more time on 10 leisure activities except religion in y1, and on all activities than mothers in y2. In y2, less time on three activities(social relationships, rituals, and media) for both fathers and mothers, less time on religion for mothers only, more time on two activities(participation, game and play) for both groups were spent than y1. Third, in the regression analysis of fathers' and mothers' leisure time on three leisure activities(sports, game and play, and media) with a distinct pattern from leisure time for adult group between y1 and y2, socioeconomic variables and lifetime variables showed different effects by gender and waves. Based on the results, family policy and programs to improve the work-life balances of working fathers and mothers discussed.

  • The effects of regular and active leisure activities on positive growth and development in adolescents are widely known. In our society, however, it is challenging to enjoy or expand such activities due to diverse constraints. Under unfavorable circumstances, this study attempted to investigate the application of time availability for liberal leisure activities as a way to help adolescents engage in active leisure activities. Specifically, this study examined the relationship between time availability (both individual and structural) and the time invested in leisure activities at youth training centers which support such leisure activities. The study found the following results: As both individual and structural time availability expanded, the time invested in leisure activities increased as well. Based on these results, this study discussed policy and practice implications regarding the support of adolescents' leisure activities.

  • Fandom is a meaningful social phenomenon that represents a significant dimension of contemporary Korean youth culture. Previous research, however, has considered fandom as a deviant activity that is negative in nature, and there is scant research on the positive effects of fandom activity. This study examined the effects of off-line and on-line fandom activity participation on adolescents' academic time management capability. Data were collected from three waves (2010, 2012, and 2014) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (middle school cohort; N=2,206 at baseline). Results from the multi-level growth curve analysis were as follows. First, more than half of the adolescents reported participating in fandom activities, and the majority of them participated in both online and offline activities. Second, adolescents' academic time management capability improved over time. Third, both off-line and on-line fandom activity participation was positively associated with adolescents' academic time management capability at the baseline (first year of middle school). The size of this relationship, however, decreased over time (from middle school to high school). This study presented the importance of appropriate guidance by adults to develop and promote the positive aspects of fandom activity, and highlighted the need for further research that focuses on the positive aspects of fandom activities.

  • This study aims to investigate how labour time pressure is associated with leisure selection and managing leisure hours, especially focusing on health related behavior issues. I have employed Time Diary data of 9,891 Korean respondents who were married and living in the cities and metropolitan area (female 51.8%, age range 20-69, average age=45.7). Leisure activities, as dependent variable, which were introduced in time diary data and the amount of time spent for such leisure were estimated. Results show that in time pressing situations(having long labour hours), leisure activities, and the hours spent for leisure tend to suffer. Especially, solitary leisure, like exercise or walking was very likely to sacrifice under time pressure. Moreover, in terms of sports or exercise, results suggest that not only time resource but also social and economic resources seemed to required for actually initiating the activity. Therefore, simply having more time (less tiome for work) may not be enough for promoting exercise for this population. Strategies and social policies that are aiming for promoting healthy behavior needs more closer look on leisure situation and people's desire for optimizing their time.

  • The aim of this study is to examine how time-use and activities are affected by work hours. To achieve this, we focused on the weekday time-use of full-time workers in Seoul Metropolitan Area(SMA). The long 'work hours' are under active discussions since it is related to the quality of life. However, many Social researcher thought that problem of Korean working hours is linked to quality of life in the abstract. Because activity connects time-use and quality of life, the key point is activity under time constraints. Therefore, travel patterns should be understood by time-use and activity patterns. This study composes trip-chains from travel data of 2010 Household Travel Survey(HTS). Grouping trip-chains by activity patterns, we could make sure that a few of activities after work is affected by a short free time. This study has potential implications for the policy of work hours and traffic problems in the evening, and will provide new geographical perspective related to measuring quality of life.
