This paper presents a piecewise image denoising with multi-scale block region detector based on quadtree structure for effective image restoration. Proposed piecewise image denoising method suggests multi-scale block region detector (MBRD) by dividing whole pixels of a noisy image into three parts, with regional characteristics: strong variation region, weak variation region, and flat region. These regions are classified according to total pixels variation between multi-scale blocks and are applied principal component analysis with local pixel grouping, bilateral filtering, and structure-preserving image decomposition operator called relative total variation. The performance of proposed method is evaluated by Experimental results. we can observe that region detection results generated by the detector seems to be well classified along the characteristics of regions. In addition, the piecewise image denoising provides the positive gain with regard to PSNR performance. In the visual evaluation, details and edges are preserved efficiently over the each region; therefore, the proposed method effectively reduces the noise and it proves that it improves the performance of denoising by the restoration process according to the region characteristics.
In this paper, we propose an efficient method for recognizing human lips. Based on Point Distribution Model, a lip shape is represented as a set of points. We calculate a lip model and the distribution of shape parameters using Principle Component Analysis and Gaussian mixture, respectively. The Expectation Maximization algorithm is used to determine the maximum likelihood parameter of Gaussian mixture. The lip contour model is derived by using the gray value changes at each point and in regions around the point and used to search the lip shape in a image. The experiments have been performed for many images, and show very encouraging result.
This paper presents a new estimation and representation of a disparity map for stereo-based video communication systems. Several pixel-based and block-based algorithms have been proposed to estimate the disparity map. While the pixel-based algorithms can achieve high accuracy in computing the disparity map, they require a lost of bits to represent the disparity information. The bit rate can be reduced by the block-based algorithm, sacrificing the representation accuracy. In this paper, the block enclosing a distinct edge is divided into two regions and the disparity of each region is set to that of a neighboring block. The proposed algorithm employs accumulated histograms and a neural network to classify a type of a block. In this paper, we proved that the proposed algorithm is more effective than the conventional algorithms in estimating and representing disparity maps through several experiments.
In this paper, we propose a method to analyze the loss region of the dictionary-based super resolution result learned for image quality improvement and to map the learning data according to the analyzed loss region. In the conventional learned dictionary-based method, a result different from the feature configuration of the input image may be generated according to the learning image, and an unintended artifact may occur. The proposed method estimate loss information of low resolution images by analyzing the reconstructed contents to reduce inconsistent feature composition and unintended artifacts in the example-based super resolution process. By mapping the training data according to the final interpolation feature map, which improves the noise and pixel imbalance of the estimated loss information using a Gaussian-based kernel, it generates super resolution with improved noise, artifacts, and staircase compared to the existing super resolution. For the evaluation, the results of the existing super resolution generation algorithms and the proposed method are compared with the high-definition image, which is 4% better in the PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) and 3% in the SSIM (Structural SIMilarity Index).
Significant feature extraction in cancer cell image analysis is an important process for grading cell carcinoma. In this study, we propose a method for 3D quantitative analysis of cell nuclei based upon digital image cytometry. First, we acquired volumetric renal cell carcinoma data for each grade using confocal laser scanning microscopy and segmented cell nuclei employing color features based upon a supervised teaming scheme. For 3D visualization, we used a contour-based method for surface rendering and a 3D texture mapping method for volume rendering. We then defined and extracted the 3D morphological features of cell nuclei. To evaluate what quantitative features of 3D analysis could contribute to diagnostic information, we analyzed the statistical significance of the extracted 3D features in each grade using an analysis of variance (ANOVA). Finally, we compared the 2D with the 3D features of cell nuclei and analyzed the correlations between them. We found statistically significant correlations between nuclear grade and 3D morphological features. The proposed method has potential for use as fundamental research in developing a new nuclear grading system for accurate diagnosis and prediction of prognosis.
This paper proposes to improve the results of image classification with spatial region growing segmentation by using an MRF-based classifier. The proposed approach is to re-classify the pixels in the boundary area, which have high probability of having classification error. The MRF-based classifier performs iteratively classification using the class parameters estimated from the region growing segmentation scheme. The proposed method has been evaluated using simulated data, and the experiment shows that it improve the classification results. But, conventional MRF-based techniques may yield incorrect results of classification for remotely-sensed images acquired over the ground area where has complicated types of land-use. A multistage MRF-based iterative class-modification in boundary is proposed to alleviate difficulty in classifying intricate land-cover. It has applied to remotely-sensed images collected on the Korean peninsula. The results show that the multistage scheme can produce a spatially smooth class-map with a more distinctive configuration of the classes and also preserve detailed features in the map.
Biologist must have to do 2DGE biological experiment for Protein Search and Analysis. This experiment coming into being 2 dimensional image. 2DGE (2D Gel Electrophoresis : two dimensional gel electrophoresis) image is the most widely used method for isolating of the objective protein by comparative analysis of the protein spot pattern in the gel plane. The process of protein spot analysis, firstly segment protein spots that are spread in 2D gel plane by image processing and can find important protein spots through comparative analysis with protein pattern of contrast group. In the algorithm which detect protein spots, previous 2DGE image analysis is applies gaussian fitting, however recently Watersheds region based segmentation algorithm, which is based on morphological segmentation is applied. Watersheds has the benefit that segment rapidly needed field in big sized image, however has under-segmentation and over-segmentation of spot area when gray level is continuous. The drawback was somewhat solved by marker point institution, but needs the split and merge process. This paper introduces a novel marker search of protein spots by watersheds-based hierarchical threshold, which can resolve the problem of marker-driven watersheds.

As of 2014, KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) operates two high-resolution satellites such as Kompsat-2 and Kompsat-3. Kompsat-3 has capability of in-track stereo images acquisition but it is quite limited because the stereo mode lowers the spatial coverage in a trajectory. In this paper we analyze the epipolar geometry from the heterogeneous Kompsat-2 and Kompsat-3 image combination to epipolar resample them for 3D spatial data acquisition. The analysis was carried out using the piecewise approach with RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) and the result showed the parabolic epipolar curve pattern. We also concluded that the third order polynomial transformation is required for epipolar image resampling. The resampled image pair showed 1 pixel level of y-parallax and can be used for 3D display and digitizing.
In this paper, we propose a real tine moving object tracking system based on block-based image processing technique and human visual processing. The system has two nun features. First, to take advantage of the merit of the biological mechanism of human retina, the system has two cameras, a CCD(Charge-Coupled Device) camera equipped with wide angle lens for more wide scope vision and a Pan-Tilt-Zoon tamers. Second, the system divides the input image into a numbers of blocks and processes coarsely to reduce the rate of tracking error and the processing time. Tn an experiment, the system showed satisfactory performances coping with almost every noisy image, detecting moving objects very int and controlling the Pan-Tilt-Zoom camera precisely.
Purpose: The aims of this study were to find brain regions in which gray matter volume was reduced and to show the capability of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis for lateralizing epileptogenic zones in medial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE). The findings were compared with fluorodeoxyglucose positron omission tomography (FDG PET). Materials and Methods: MR T1-weighted images of 12 left mTLE and 11 right mTLE patients were compared with those of 37 normal controls. Images were transformed to standard MNI space and averaged in order to create study-specific brain template. Each image was normalized to this local template and brain tissues were segmented. Modulation VBM analysis was performed in order to observe gray matter volume change. Gray matter was smoothed with a Gaussian kernel. After these preprocessing, statistical analysis was peformed using statistical parametric mapping software (SPM99). FDG PET images were compared with those of 22 normal controls using SPM. Results: Gray matter volume was significantly reduced in the left amygdala and hippocampus in left mTLE. In addition, volume of cerebellum, anterior cingulate, and fusiform gyrus in both sides and left insula was reduced. In right mTLE, volume was reduced significantly in right hippocampus. In contrast, FDG uptake was decreased in broad areas of left or right temporal lobes in left TLE and right TLE, respectively. Conclusions: Gray matter loss was found in the ipsilateral hippocampus by modulation VBM analysis in medial temporal lobe epilepsy. This VBM analysis might be useful in lateralizing the epileptogenic zones in medial temporal lobe epilepsy, while SPM analysis of FDG PET disclosed hypometabolic epileptogenic zones.
