  • This study aimed to investigate the tectonic setting of the volcanic edifice at Mt. Baekdu by analyzing petrochemical characteristics of Holocene felsic volcanic rocks distributed in the Baekdusan stratovolcano edifice and summit of the Cheonji caldera rim, as well as Pleistocene mafic rocks of the Gaema lava plateau and Changbaishan shield volcano edifice. During the early eruption phases, mafic eruption materials, with composition ranging from alkali basalt to trachybasalt, or from subalkaline (tholeiitic) basalt to basaltic andesite formed the Gaema lava plateau and Changbaishan shield volcanic edifice, whereas the Baekdusan stratovolcano edifice and Holocene tephra deposits near the summit of the Cheonji caldera comprises trachytic and rhyolitic compositions. Analysis results revealed bimodal compositions with a lack of 54-62 SiO2, between the felsic and mafic volcanic rocks. This suggested that magmatic processes occurred at the locations of extensional tectonic settings in the crust. Mafic volcanic rocks were plotted in the field of within-plate volcanic zones or between within-plate alkaline and tholeiite zones on the tectonic discrimination diagram, and it was in good agreement with the results of the TAS diagram. Felsic volcanic rocks were plotted in the field of within-plate granite tectonic settings on discrimination diagrams of granitic rocks. None of the results were plotted in the field of arc islands or continental margin arcs. The primitive mantle-normalized spider diagram did not show negative (-) anomalies of Nb and Ti, which are distinctive characteristics of subduction-related volcanic rocks, but exhibited similar patterns of ocean island basalt. Trace element compositions showed no evidence of, magmatic processes related to subduction zones, indicating that the magmatic processes forming the Baekdusan volcanic field occurred in an intraplate environment. The distribution of shallow earthquakes in this region supports the results. The volcanic rocks of the Baekdusan volcanic field are interpreted as the result of intraplate volcanism originating from the upwelling of mantle material during the Cenozoic era.

  • K-Ar ages on biotites have been determined from the Proterozoic Buncheon and Hongjesa granitic rocks in comparison with the Rb-Sr whole-rock ages to investigate the ages of metamorphic events. The Rb-Sr whole-rock ages determinations on the Buncheon and Hongjesa granitoid rocks were previously reported as 2,100Ma and 1,700Ma, respectively. K-Ar ages on biotites separated from the studied rock have revealed three different age groups such as 1) 1,200~1,300Ma, 2) 600~700Ma and 3) 300~400Ma. The Rb-Sr whole-rock ages for the granitic rocks represent the time of emplacement, whereas the K-Ar ages on biotites generally indicate the time of metamorphism or alteration. The large discordance in the two age systems may not be explained as indicating the cooling period of the granitic batholiths. The K-Ar ages on biotites from the granitoid rocks might not be simply interpreted as the age of the last phase of metamorphism, since the granitic rocks had been undergone multistages of amphibolite facies-metamorphism in the Precambrian period. During the multistages of intermediate grade metamorphism, $^{40}Ar$-loss could be inevitably taken place as the metamorphic temperatures went up above the blocking temperature of biotite ($300{\pm}50^{\circ}C$). The results of the K-Ar dating on biotites from this study are probably minimum ages or hydrothermal alteration ages.

  • Prospection was performed on the tin mineralized belt in Mwanza and Kongolo areas of Katanga, DR Congo. Most of deposits in Katanga areas are related to the granites which are located in Kibaran belt in NE and SW trends of mid Proterozoic. Metasedimentary rocks in the Kibaran belt are intruded by granites, and tin, niobium and tantalum deposits are especially developed along with tin-granite. Cassiterite, coltan and gold are developed in the pegmatite, quartz vein and greisen in related to the tin-granite in Mwanza and Katanga areas, and they are exploited by artisan in the smale scale. And we conducted the works with the alluviums and stream sediments in the case of no outcrops. With the results of analysis of samples, we will choose a few potential mineralized zones and con-tinue to prosepect precisely.

  • The Chungung-dong 5-storied pagoda (Treasure No. 12) in the nnm, Korea was studied on the basis of petrological weathering and deterioration diagnosis. Frontal part of the pagoda is looked out on the N30$^{\circ}$W. Constitution rocks of this pagoda show augen gneiss and biotite granite. Host rock of the pagoda was highly exfoliation and discoloration, therefore most rock-forming minerals were altered to the clay minerals due to the mineralogical and chemical weathering. Open cavity and rock surface occur partly green and black patchs because of contamination by algae, lichen and moss, and the lower part of the pagoda is transition to the some weeds. This biological problems are need for cleaning and chemical treatments. For the structural stability, the pagoda is rebuilt without open gap between the each rock materials. All iron plates eliminate from the difference gap of the rock materials, and properly conservation treatments need to be repaired petro-filler for stone cultural properties and water curtain for the humidity attenuation of the ground.

  • The Wolchul Mt. area is composed of a biotite granite and a pink feldspar granite. These granites are distinctly different in terms of their field occurrence, mineralogy, trace element and REE composition, as well as their isotope ages. The biotite granite has higher ferromagnesian elements and lower lithophile trace element abundances than the pink feldspar granite. The biotite granite has high Sr and Ba while the pink feldspar granite has high Rb. On the Rb-Sr-Ba diagram the biotite granite plots as a granodiorite while the pink feldspar granite belongs to a strongly differentiated granite. The ${\Sigma}$ LREE/ ${\Sigma}$ REE for the biotite granite is 0.95 and for the pink feldspar granite it is 0.88. The ratio shows a steep decrese in LREE while HREE is essentially constant. Based on the Eu/Sm, $[La/Lu]_{cN}$ and low Eu(-), the biotite granite has quartz diorite to granodiorite composition while the pink feldspar granite, with a relatively high Eu(-) anomaly, falls into the monzo- to syenogranite classification. The silica vs. trace element diagrams for the two granites indicate that the biotite granite could have formed near to a continental margin or volcanic island setting environment while the pink feldspar granite formed within a continental plate or as result of plate collision. The biotite granite has a U-Pb zircon age of 175 Ma, i.e. Middle Jurassic. The pink feldspar granite is younger, it has a K-Ar orthoclase age $93.6{\pm}1.5$ Ma which is Late Cretaceous age.

  • Understanding flow pattern of water and solute in subsurface is essential for the reduction and prevention of contamination of soil and groundwater and for the investigation and remediation of contaminated site. The objective of this study is to examine the infiltration pattern in a soil developed from the Jurassic granite using (Brilliant Blue FCF $C_{37}H_{34}N_{2}Na_{2}O_{9}S_{3}$), the nonfluorescent and nontoxic food dye. All image processing was conducted using geographic image processing software, ER Mapper, Version 6.2. The dye coverage was determined by counting the stained pixels in the photographs (80${\times}$80cm, 80TEX>${\times}$5cm) for the vertical and horizontal view. A homogeneous matrix flow occurred in the A horizon with weak, medium granular structure and fingering at the interface of finer-textured A horizon and coarser-textured C horizon. Pegmatitic vein originated from the granite and plant root in C horizon induced preferential flow.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to describe the granitic regolith and frost creep phenomena in Daegwanryung area in order to demonstrate the relationship of the weathered materials and the surrounding surface, in order to point out that the characteristics of this particular complex of granitic regolith most closely resemble those of soil frost creep phenomena formed elsewhere under periglacial conditions. For this study, the writer has clarified their structure and its associated milieux, with a group of methods and techniques, field survey, micro-morphological analysis, granulometry of weathered materials etc. Such facies of granitic regolith in situ with silty heterometric materials and micas are prone to be deformed by cryo-suction as well as deep freezing. It was probably formed by cryogenic activity, or frost creep in the periglacial climate of a very cold and humid condition.

  • In this study, the identification and distribution for rock types of the South Gate Wall of Myeoncheoneupseong Town Wall in Dangjin was investigated, and the homogeneity analysis of rock properties in the wall between the surrounding out crops estimated by examining the possible provenances. The Town Wall consists of variable rock types about 15 kinds. Granitic rocks (61.0%), quartzite (21.0%) and quartz feldspar porphyry (8.7%) accounted over 90% of total survey section. These rock properties are very similar to surrounding rocks of the Town Wall on the basis of occurrences, magnetic susceptibility, petrography, mineralogical and goechemical characteristics. Thus, it is probable that the rock properties of the Town Wall were supplied from the Town Wall around about 8km within at Seongsangri, Yangyuri, Seongbukri, Galsanri and Daedeokdong area. And supplied rock properties in the construction process, easy procurement rather than rock type was most likely seems to be considered.

  • A high-resolution seismic profile acquired across the middle part of the Pungam Basin, one of the Cretaceous sedimentary basins in Korea, has been interpreted to delineate subsurface geological structures. Boundary faults, intrusive bodies, and unconformity surfaces are identified on the seismic section. Basin fills are divided into five depositional units (Units I, II, III, IV, and V in descending order). The normal faults were formed by transtentional movement along a sinistral strike-slip fault zone. Unconsolidated sediments, a weathered layer, and sedimentary layers overly the Precambrian gneiss. The granite body intruded at the southeastern part contacts the adjacent sedimentary rocks by a near-vertical fault. Granitic intrusions caused tectonic fractures and normal faults of various sizes. An andesitic intrusive body indicates post-depositional magmatic intrusions. Continuous strike-slip movements have deformed basin-filling sediments (Units I and II).

  • There is clear difference in content of the major and trace elements between Masan granites of Cu province and Yucheon-Eonyang granites of Pb-Zn province in the Yucheon Basin: the former has low content in K(2.08%), Na(2.42%) and Rb (127ppm), and high content in Ca(3.75%), Mg(1.42%) and Sr(304ppm) whereas the latter has high content in K(3.56-3.60%), Na(3.05-3.06%) and Rb(144-161ppm), and low content in Ca(0.62-0.96), Mg(0.21-0.26%) and Sr(136-157ppm). Ore metals in granites also show slight difference between two areas: Masan granites have slightly higher Cu content(18ppm) than Yucheon-Eonyang granites(13, 14ppm), whereas Yucheon granite(29ppm) has slightly higher Pb content than Masan granites(25ppm). Thus, it may be possible to apply geochemical difference of the granites to distinguish whether a Cretaceous granite mass is related to copper or lead-zinc mineralization, and whether it belongs Cu-province or Pb-Zn province in the Yucheon Basin.
