Three-layer porous alumina-mullite composites with a symmetric gradient porosity are prepared using a controlled freeze/gel-casting method. In this work, tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and coal fly ash with an appropriate addition of $Al_2O_3$ were used as the freezing vehicle and the starting material, respectively. When sintered at $1300-1500^{\circ}C$, unidirectional macro-pore channels aligned regularly along the growth direction of solid TBA were developed. Simultaneously, the pore channels were surrounded by less porous structured walls. A high degree of solid loading resulted in low porosity and a small pore size, leading to higher compressive strength. The sintered porous layered composite exhibited improved compressive strength with a slight decrease in its porosity. After sintering at $1500^{\circ}C$, the layered composite consisting of outer layers with a 50 wt% solid loading showed the highest compressive strength ($90.8{\pm}3.7MPa$) with porosity of approximately 26.4%.
Zeta potential, sedimentation bulk density and rheology in the dispersion system have been studied in terms of solid loading (40-55 vol%), and types of additives. Ammonium polymethacrylate, glycerol, ethoxylated acetylenic diol, and polyvinyl alcohol have been used as the dispersant, cryo-protectant, surfactant, and binder, respectively. Sedimentation density greatly increased upon adding dispersant; the effect was more pronounced with ionic alumina suspension compared with covalent silicon carbide. With further addition of cryo-protectant and surfactant to dispersant, the sedimentation density increased somewhat. The suspension viscosity generally behaviored in an opposite manner to the sedimentation density, i.e., high sedimentation gave low high-shear viscosity, indicative of low order structure formation in the suspended particles. Shear rate rheology in shear rate of $2-300\;sec^{-1}$ showed a shear thinning and its onset began at similar shear rate (${\sim}100\;sce^{-1}$), regardless of solid loading.
ZrB2 powders were prepared from a mixture of ZrO2, B2O3 and Mg by self-propagating high temperature synthesis method. The combustion product was successfully obtained from a mixture of ZrO2:B2O3:Mg=1:2:8.5 molar ratio. By-product, MgO was effectively removed by leaching with 1M HCl solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$ for over 5hours. After leaching, the Mg content was 0.86~1.42 wt%, and the mean particle size was 4.72${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The addition of 7.5 wt%(14Ni:1.0C) as a sintering aid greatly densified ZrB2 bodies compared with that of only Ni. The ZrB2 sintered bodies containing 7.5 wt%(14Ni:1.0C) was 94.3% of the theoretical density. In this case, ZrB2 existed as a major phase and had a bend strength of 300 MPa and a vickers hardness of 2000 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$.
Well developed hydroxyapatite whiskers (length 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, diameter 0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) have been synthesized by the hydrolysis reaction of $\alpha$-tricalcium phosphate ($\alpha$-Ca$_3$(PO$_4$)$_2$) under pH 9.1 at 9$0^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. The effect of reaction conditions (temperature, time, pH) on the conversion of $\alpha$-tricalcium phosphate to hydroxyapatite was examined. In addition, the hydroryapatite was characterized in terms of microstructure, composition and thermal stability using XRD, SEM, ICP, and TGA instruments.
High purity(99.99%) spherical particles of hydrated Basic Aluminum Salts(BAS) were prepared by a homogeneous precipitation process utilizing the urea decomposition reaction and characterized by XRD, SEM, TG-DTA, IR and PSA methods. Amorphous hydrated BAS was precipitated in the range of pH 4~6. The molar ratio [Al3+]/[SO42-] for the precipitate particles was about 3.7. With increasing the concentration of aluminum sulfate the precipitation of the hydrated BAS occurred slowly and the precipitate particles with a narrow size distribution were fine(1-2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter). At temperatures in the range 400$^{\circ}$to 95$0^{\circ}C$, desulfurization and dehydroxylization resulted in weight loss with 22%. When the precipitate particles were thermally treated, the crystlline ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 was identifited by XRD at 50$0^{\circ}C$ and ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 particles were transformed into $\alpha$-Al2O3 at 100$0^{\circ}C$. A vermicular network was produced by calcining at 125$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of some iris parameters in predicting the 8 constitution Methods: From November 2012 to February 2018, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 171 patients who were visited to the Korean Oriental Clinic. We conducted a stepwise binary logistic regression analysis to find the association between Iris parameters and 8 constitutional Medicine. Results: Automic Nerve Wreath Ration (ANWR) was larger and toxic radii was longer in Earth and Wood constitutions than Metal and water constitution. ANWR was larger and pupil are ratio(PAR) was smaller in Wood constitutions than Earth constitutions. And others did not show significant results. Conclusions: This study suggests that the relationship between some of the iris parameters and 8 constitution was significant, but more accurate follow-up study is needed.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the relationship between iridological constitution and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 $\beta$) gene polymorphism. Methods : Iris constitution were diagnosed by automatic Iris analysis system, Bexel Irina(Korea). The blood was stored at - $20^{\circ}$... until it was ready to be extracted. The genomic DNA was extracted by inorganic procedure. The concentration of DNA was estimated by absorbance at 260 nm. The interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 $\beta$) gene polymorphism was detected by PCR amplification. Results & Conclusions : The author classified 166 individuals according to Iris constitution, and determined IL-1 $\beta$ genotype. The frequencies of Iris constitutions as follows : neurogenic type, 41 (24.7%); abdominal connective tissue weakness type, 53(31.9%); cardio-renal connective tissue weakness type, 50 (30.1%); the others type, 22 (13.3%). Especially, the frequency of abdominal connective tissue weakness type was significantly higher in err genotype than in the remaining constitutions. As a result, The author demonstrated the association among IL-1 $\beta$ genotype, IBD and Iris constitution.
Porous poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds were fabricated by salt leaching method. The PCL scaffolds were treated with aqueous NaOH for 0h, 2h, 4h, 8h, and 12h at $40^{\circ}C$. The NaOH-treated PCL scaffolds were dipped in $CaCl_2$ and $K_2HPO_4{\cdot}_3H_2O$ solution alternately three times to induce apatite nuclei onto the surface of the scaffolds. The NaOH-treated PCL scaffolds were immersed into SBF solution for 1day to grow the apatite. The apatite formation were investigated as a fuction of NaOH treatment time. The hydrophilicty and surface area of the PCL scaffolds were increased with NaOH-treatment time. The NaOH-treated PCL scaffolds were successfully formed a dense and uniform bone-like apatite layer after immersion for 1 day in SBF solution.
Biodegradable $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate ( $\beta$-TCP)/poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) composites were synthesized by in-situ polymerization with microwave energy. The influence of the $\beta$-TCP content in $\beta$-TCP/PLGA composites on the molecular weight, crystallinity, microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. As the molecular weight of composites decreased, the $\beta$-TCP content increased up to 10 wt.%, while the excess addition of the $\beta$-TCP content above 10 wt.% the molecular weight increased with increasing of the $\beta$-TCP content. This behavior would be due to the superheating effect or nonthermal effect induced by microwave energy. It was found that the bending strength and Young's modulus of the $\beta$-TCP/PLGA composites was proportional to the molecular weight of PLGA. The bending strength of the $\beta$-TCP/PLGA composites ranged from 18 to 38 MPa, while Young's modulus was in the range from 2 to 6 GPa.
