  • Mixed-mode (MM) designs in which data are collected by different modes in one design have become increasingly popular. An MM data collection has several advantages such as reductions of coverage error, non-response and cost. However, MM designs may introduce mode effects that are confounded by selection effects and measurement effects, which can make MM data quality poor. In order to investigate mode effects, SRI implemented a concurrent mixed-mode experiment in 2014 where respondents could choose between a self-administrated Web survey and a self-administrated paper survey. This paper separately estimates selection effects and measurement effects. We found that measurement effects on some items are large.

  • Regarding the growing concern for the mixture of landline and web-based/mobile survey, researchers are increasingly interested in methodological examination of anticipated benefits and problems of mixed mode surveys. This study focuses on scale construction. Multiple questions with a multi-point scale have been preferred in traditional surveys. However, it is not obvious if those scales have advantages also in a web-based survey. We tested if, in a web-based survey, validity, reliability, and easiness of response differ according to the size of scales.

  • Rock fracture mechanics has been widely applied to blasting, hydraulic fracturing, rock slope and many other practical problems in rock engineering. But a measuring method for the fracture toughness of rock, one of the mort important parameters in fracture mechanics as an intrinsic property of rock, has not been yet well established. To obtain mode I rock fracture toughness, the more favorable disc-typed specimens such as CCNBD, SCB, chevron-notched SCB and BDT were used in this study. Rock fracture toughness under mixed-mode and mode II conditions was measured by using the STCA applied to the CCNBD specimen. Size effects such as specimen thickness, diameter and notch length on fracture toughness were investigated. From the mixed-mode results, fracture envelops were obtained by applying various regression curves. The mixed-mode results were also compared with three mixed-mode failure criteria. In each fracture toughness test, acoustic emission was measured to get the data for determining the load levels of different crack propagation patterns.

  • Based on mixed-mode transient analyses utilizing a 2-dimensional device simulator, we have suggested the methodology to analyze the HBM ESD phenomena in CMOS chips utilizing NMOS transistors for ESD protection, and have analyzes the HBM discharge mechanisms in detail. Also the second breakdown characteristics in the protection device have been successfully simulated based on mixed-mode simulations, to explain the discharge mechanisms leading to device failure. To analyze the effects of the device structure changes on the discharge characteristics, we have compared the results of DC analyses and mixed-mode transient analyses, and have discussed about more robust designs of NMOS transistor structures against HBM ESD based on the analyses.

  • We report a theoretical study on wave propagation in magneto-optic thin-film waveguides. The field distribution and phase velocity of the guided hybrid modes are analyzed in terms of the phase difference of basic system modes and the Faraday rotation of the magneto-optic thin film. Splitting of the phase constant curves due to the F araday rotation is discussed. The present hybridmode analysis leads to a conversion matrix which shows that the distance dependence of the mode conversion in the guide is different from that in the bulk medium.

  • Purpose of this paper is to determine the appropriate size of a center notched disk specimen for mode I fracture toughness $K_{IC}$. For this purpose, mode I test results with various sizes of center notched disk were compared with the RILEM three-point-bend test ones. Compressive strength of concrete used in this paper was 44.9 MPa. Diameters of 200, 300, 400 mm, thickness of 75, 100, 125 mm, and notch length ratios an of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 were used for the mode I disk test. Also, diameter of 300mm thickness of 100mm, and notch length ratios a/R of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 were used for the mixed mode disk test. Mixed mode stress intensity factors were investigated by changing notch angles for the disk specimen. Stress intensity factors of a center notched disk were calculated with the various methods for comparison. From the test results, mode I fracture toughness calculated from the disk specimen with diameter of 300 mm, thickness of Inn and notch length ratio a/R of 0.5 was very similar to the RILEM three-point-bend test ones. And it is verified that stress intensity factors for mixed mode can be easily calculated with the disk specimen.

  • In this study, experimental findings on the resistance to magnesium sulfate attack of portland cement mortar and paste specimens incorporating metakaolin (MK) are presented. Specimens with four replacement levels of metakaolin (0, 5, 10 and 15% of cement by mass) were exposed to solutions with concentrations of 0.424% and 4.24% as $MgSO_4$ at ambient temperature. The resistance of mortar specimens was evaluated through visual examination and linear expansion measurements. Additionally, in order to identify the products formed by magnesium sulfate attack, microstructural analyses such as XRD, DSC and SEM/EDS were also performed on the paste samples incorporating metakaolin. Results confirmed that mortar specimens with a high replacement level of metakaolin exhibited lower resistance to a higher concentration of magnesium sulfate solution. It was found that the negative effect of metakaolin on the magnesium sulfate attack is partially attributed to the formation of gypsum and thaumasite. Conclusively, it is necessary to pay a special attention when using metakaolin in concrete structures, particularly under highly concentrated magnesium sulfate environment.

  • By suggesting a mixed-mode transient simulation method utilizing a 2-dimensional device simulator, we have analyzed CDM ESD Phenomena in CMOS chips, which utilize NMOS transistors as ESD protection devices. By analyzing the simulation results, the mechanisms leading to device failures in CDM discharge and the differences in discharge characteristics with different polarities of stored charges have been explained in detail. The effects of changes in interconnection resistance values on the gate-oxide failure at input buffers, which is the most serious problem in CDM discharge, have been examined. Also improvements in discharge characteristics with addition of the NMOS transistor for input-buffer protection have been examined.
