  • The aim of this study is to develop a rapid calculation technique of the residual strength in order to prevent sequential events under grounding accidents. Very Large Crude-Oil Carrier (VLCC), Suezmax, and Aframax double hull oil tankers carrying large quantities of crude oil were selected for target structures. The rock geometries are chosen from the published regulation by Marine Pollution Treaty (MARPOL) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Oceanic rocks as the most frequently encountered obstruction with ships are applied in this work. Damage condition was predicted using ALPS/HULL program based on grounding scenario with selected parameters, i.e. depth of penetration, damage location and tanker type. The results of the scenarios are quantified to form an empirical formula which can evaluate the residual strength. The proposed formula is validated by applying a series of random grounding scenarios.

  • Along with the development of coasts, islands and mountains, the demand of long-span bridges increases which, in turn, brings forth the construction of cable-supported bridges like suspension and cable-stayed bridges. There are various types of statically indeterminate structures widely applied that supported the main girder with stay cables, main cables, hanger cables with aesthetic structural appearance. As to the cable-supported bridges, the health monitoring of a bridge can be identified by measuring tension force on cable repeatedly. The tension force on cable is measured either by direct measurement of stress of cable using load cell or hydraulic jack, or by vibration method estimating tension force using cable shape and measured dynamic characteristics. In this study, a method to estimate dynamic characteristics of hanger cables by using a digital image processing is suggested. Digital images are acquired by a portable digital camcorder, which is the sensor to remotely measure dynamic responses considering convenient and economical aspects for use. A digital image correlation(DIC) technique is applied for digital image processing, and an image transform function(ITF) to correct the geometric distortion induced from the deformed images is used to estimate subpixel. And, the correction of motion of vision-based measurement system using a fixed object in an image without installing additional sensor can be enhanced the resolution of dynamic responses and modal frequencies of hanger cables.

  • This study was conducted to estimate genetic parameters for egg yolk cholesterol. Content of egg yok cholesterol was measured for a total of 473 hens of White Leghorn line. Cholesterol values were obtained from tee consecutively laid eggs when hens were 53 weeks of age. The yolk of each egg was weighted and freeze dried. Dried egg yolks were stored at -2$0^{\circ}C$ until analyzed. The results obtained from this study were as follows; 1. Yolk cholesterol content was measured in average $56.00\pm$0.194 mg/g dry yolk. 2. Heritability from the sire component of variance was $0.522\pm$0.215 and from the sire+dam component of variance $0.33\pm$0.209. 3. Estimates of phenotypic correlation between your cholesterol and other factors such as body weight at 20 weeks of age, age at first egg, 40-week total egg number, egg Production rate: 53-week egg weight and 53-week yolk weight were -0.0208, -0.0321, -0.0378, -0.0834, 0.0790 and 0.1624, respectively. And genetic correlation coefficients for each item in the order were -0.5293, 0.7105, -0.4062, -0.0254, 0.2164 and 0.5027, respectively. 4. These results suggest the possibility that egg Yolk cholesterol should be reduced through selecting of sire families. To breed for low egg yolk cholesterol, it makes age at first egg earlier and enhances total egg number so that we can obtain the high rate of egg Production.

  • In this study, a new method to estimate the bridge deflection is developed by using Wireless Tilt Sensor. Most of evaluations of structural integrity, it is very important to measure the geometric profile, which is a major factor representing the global behavior of civil structure, especially bridges. In the past, Because of the lack of appropriate methods to measure the deflection curve of bridges on site, the measurement of deflection had been done restrictly within just a few discrete points along the bridge. Also the measurement point could be limited to locations installed with displacement transducers. So, in this study, the deflection of the structure was measured by wireless tilt sensor instead of LVDT(Linear Variable Differential Transformer). Angle change of tilt sensor shows structural behavior by the change of the resistor values which is presented to voltage. Moreover, the maximum deflection was calculated by changing the deflection angle which was calculated as V(measured voltage) ${\times}$F(factor) to deflection. The experimental tests were carried out to verify the developed deflection estimation techniques. Because the base of tilt measuring is the gravity, uniform measurement is possible independent of a measuring point. Also, measuring values were showed very high accuracy.

  • Recently, a number of equipments related with electricity, electronics, and communication in the same building are needed to the grounding system for safety from unexpected accidents. When the faulted electric current flows into a certain grounding system, the potential rise in that system takes place and it might induce the potential rise to other grounding system. This potential interference was strongly affected by the surface potential, which was deeply related with the electrode shape. In this paper, the fundamental formula was deduced on the basis of surface potential of two grounding electrodes. Which corresponds to source of the potential interference and other grounding electrode, respectively. Therefore, the degree of potential interference in this mesh grounding electrode system was verified by the simple model simulation. In addition, in order to identify the difference between the grounding resistance in the realistic construction site and the expected value from the corresponding simulation, the experiment was performed with model on a reduced scale about the realistic grounding system. It consists of stainless steel hemisphere electrodes in a water tank. From this work, the grounding resistance in the mesh grounding electrode showed the good coincidence results between those. Consequently, it is confirmed that the grounding resistance in the mesh electrode is possible to be estimated by performing the experiment using the water tank model.

  • In evaluation of blast-induced vibration, peak particle velocity (PPV) is generally calculated by using attenuation relation curve. Calculated velocity is compared with the value in legal requirements or the standards to determine the stability. Attenuation relation curve varies depending on frequency of test blasting, geological structure of the site and blasting condition, so it is difficult to predict accurately using such an equation. Since PPV is response value from the ground, direct evaluation of the structure is impractical. Because of such a limit, engineers tend to use the commercial numerical analysis program in evaluating the stability of the structure more accurately. However, when simulate the explosion process using existing numerical analysis program, it's never easy to accurately simulate the complex conditions (fracture, crushing, cracks and plastic deformation) around blasting hole. For simulating such a process, the range for modelling will be limited due to the maximum node count and it requires extended calculation time as well. Thus, this study is intended to simulate the elastic energy after fractured zone only, instead of simulating the complex conditions of the rock that results from the blast, and the analysis of response characteristics of the velocity depending on shape and size of the fractured zone was conducted. As a result, difference in velocity and attenuation character were calculated depending on fractured zone around the blast source appeared. Propagation of vibration tended to spread spherically as it is distanced farther from the blast source.

  • In suspension bridges, hanger cables are the main load-supporting members. The tension of the hanger cables of a suspension bridge is a very important parameter for assessing the integrity and safety of the bridge. In general, indirect methods are used to measure the tension of the hanger cables of a suspension bridge in traffic use. A representative indirect method is the vibration method, which extracts modal frequencies from the cables' responses and then measures the cable tension using the cables' geometric conditions and the modal frequencies. In this study, the image processing technique is applied to facilitate the estimation of the dynamic responses of the cables using the image signal, for which a portable digital camcorder was used due to its convenience and cost-efficiency. Ambient vibration tests were conducted on a suspension bridge in traffic use to verify the validity of the back analysis method, which can estimate the tension of remote hanger cables using the modal frequencies as a parameter. In addition, the tension estimated through back analysis method, which was conducted to minimize the difference between the modal frequencies calculated using finite element analysis of the hanger cables and the measured modal frequencies, was compared with that measured using the vibration method.

  • This is a basic study on the development of deep learning-based algorithms to detect smoke before the smoke detector operates in the event of a ship fire, analyze and utilize the detected data, and support fire suppression and evacuation activities by predicting the spread of smoke before it spreads to remote areas. Proposed algorithms were reviewed in accordance with the following procedures. As a first step, smoke images obtained through fire simulation were applied to the YOLO (You Only Look Once) model, which is a deep learning-based object detection algorithm. The mean average precision (mAP) of the trained YOLO model was measured to be 98.71%, and smoke was detected at a processing speed of 9 frames per second (FPS). The second step was to estimate the spread of smoke using the coordinates of the boundary box, from which was utilized to extract the smoke geometry from YOLO. This smoke geometry was then applied to the time series prediction algorithm, long short-term memory (LSTM). As a result, smoke spread data obtained from the coordinates of the boundary box between the estimated fire occurrence and 30 s were entered into the LSTM learning model to predict smoke spread data from 31 s to 90 s in the smoke image of a fast fire obtained from fire simulation. The average square root error between the estimated spread of smoke and its predicted value was 2.74.

  • In this study, a smoothing method was applied to improve the accuracy of peak wave period estimation using the water surface elevation observed from the Oceanographic and Meteorological Observation Tower located on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula. Validation of the application of the smoothing method was per- formed using variance of the surface elevation and total amount wave energy, and then the effect on the application of smoothing was analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the correlation coefficient between variance of the surface elevation and total amount wave energy was 0.9994, confirming that there was no problem in applying the method. Thereafter, as a result of reviewing the effect of smoothing, it was found to be reduced by about 4 times compared to the confidence interval of the existing estimated spectrum, confirming that the accuracy of the estimated peak wave period was improved. It was found that there was a statistically significant difference in proba- bility density between 4 and 6 seconds due to the smoothing application. In addition, for optimal smoothing, the appropriate number of smoothings according to the significant wave height range was calculated using a statistical technique, and the number of smoothings was found to increase due to the unstable spectral shape as the significant wave height decreased.

  • This study numerically discusses wave forces acting on a vertical wall such as breakwaters or revetments, subjected to incident undular or turbulent bores. Due to the complex hydrodynamics of bore, its wave forces have been predicted, mainly through laboratory experiments. Numerical simulations in this paper were carried out by CADMAS-SURF(CDIT, 2001), which is based on Navier-Stokes momentum equations and VOF method (Hirt and Nichols, 1981) for tracking free water surface. Its original source code was also partly revised to generate bore in the numerical water channel. Numerical raw data computed by CADMAS-SURF included great strong spike phenomena that show the abrupt jumps of wave loads. To resolve this undesired noise of raw data, the band-pass filter with the frequency of 5Hz was utilized. The filtered results showed reasonable agreements with the experimental results performed by Matsutomi (1991) and Ramsden (1996). It was confirmed that CADMASSURF can be applied to the design of coastal structures against tsunami bores. In addition, the transformation process and propagation speed of bores in the same 2-d water channel were discussed by the variations of water level for time and space. The numerical results indicated that the propagation speed of bore was changed due to the nonlinear interactions between negative and reflected waves.
