A method to estimate the 3-D shape of surface with specular reflection is proposed, where the difference between the images reflected from a flat surface and a curved surface is used. First, we analyzed the geometry of the spatial reflection at specular surface and the variation of reflected light due to curved surface, whose results are used to estimate 3-D shape. The proposed method is shown to be effective via experiments using the illumination with spatially distributed light source and the CCD camera to capture the light reflected from a surface. In experiments, the captured images from curved surface with specular reflection are processed to approximately estimate 3-D shape.
This study performed quantitative assessment of the performance of adjustment models by a-priori analysis of the statistics of the surface parameter estimates against modeling factors. Lidar, airborne imagery, and SAR imagery have been used to acquire the earth surface elevation, where the shape properties of the surface need to be determined through neighboring observations around target location. In this study, parameters which are selected to be estimated are elevation, slope, second order coefficient. In this study, several factors which are needed to be specified to compose adjustment models are classified into three types: mathematical functions, kernel sizes, and weighting types. Accordingly, a-priori standard deviations of the parameters are computed for varying adjustment models. Then their corresponding confidence regions for both the standard deviation of the estimate and the estimate itself are calculated in association with probability distributions. Thereafter, the resulting confidence regions are compared to each other against the factors constituting the adjustment models and the quantitative performance of adjustment models are ascertained.

This paper proposes the effective shape descriptor for 3D foot pose estimation. To reduce processing time, silhouette-based foot image database is built and meta information which involves the 3D pose of the foot is appended to the database. And we proposed a modified Centroid Contour Distance whose size of the feature space is small and performance of pose estimation is better than the others. In order to analyze performance of the descriptor, we evaluate time and spatial complexity with retrieval accuracy, and then compare with the previous methods. Experimental results show that the proposed descriptor is more effective than the previous methods on feature extraction time and pose estimation accuracy.
In modern passive sonar systems, a towed array sensor is used to minimize the effects of own ship noise and to get a higher SNR. The thin and long towed array sensor can be guided in a non-linear form according to the maneuvering of tow-ship. If this change of the array shape is not considered, the performance of beamformer may deteriorate. In order to properly beamform the elements in the array, an accurate estimate of the array shape is required. Various techniques exist for estimating the shape of the linear array. In the case of a method using a heading sensor, the estimation performance may be degraded due to the effect of heading sensor noise. As means of removing this potential error, weighted polynomial fitting technique for estimating array shape is developed here. In order to evaluate the performance of proposed method, we conducted computer simulation. From the experiments, it was confirmed that the proposed method is more robust to noise than the conventional method.
This paper proposes a 3D structure recovery and registration method that uses four or more common points. For each frame of a given video, a partial structure is recovered using tracked points. The 3D coordinates, camera positions and camera directions are computed at once by our improved scaled orthographic factorization method. The partially recovered point sets are parts of a whole model. A registration of point sets makes the complete shape. The recovered subsets are integrated by transforming each coordinate system of the local point subset into a common basis coordinate system. The process of shape recovery and integration is performed uniformly and linearly without any nonlinear iterative process and without loss of accuracy. The execution time for the integration is significantly reduced relative to the conventional ICP method. Due to the fast recovery and registration framework, our shape recovery scheme is applicable to various interactive video applications. The processing time per frame is under 0.01 seconds in most cases and the integration error is under 0.1mm on average.

A methodology to nondestructively locate and estimate size of damage in beam-type structures using a few natural frequencies or a few mode shapes is presented. A damage-localization algorithm to locate damage from changes in natural frequencies and a damage-sizing algorithm to estimate crack-size from natural frequency perturbation are outlined. A damage index algorithm to localize and estimate severity of damage from monitoring changes in mode shapes is outlined. The frequency-based method and the mode-shape-based method are evaluated for several damage scenarios by locating and sizing damage in PS concrete beams lot which a few natural frequencies and mode shapes are generated from finite element models. The result of the analyses indicates that the two methods correctly localize and closely estimate the size of the crack simulated in the test beam.
Linear towed arrays (LTA) have a nonlinear shape due to tow vessel motion, ocean swells and currents. By reasons of nominally linear shape, various towed array shape estimation techniques have been developed since the perturbed shape cause the error in target detection. In this paper,, we propose the beamforming method for the perturbed LTA with simple structure. The proposed method linearizes a nonlinear phase of steering vector with position information measured by two reference sensors. It can be proved using some properties of Markov transition matrix, and iteration number of linearization process is decided by variance of cross phase difference. As a result of computer simulation in the ocean environment, beampattern of the proposed method is almost same with the ideal case in my type of array shape. In the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance simlation, the DOA estimation performance of the proposed beamforming method is evaluated, and the comparison with Bartlett beamformer of the LTA shows that the proposed method can estimate. the spatial characteristic of sources more accuracy.

Deflection and deformation occur easily in structures with long length, such as bridges and pipelines. Shape monitoring is required for ensuring their structural health. A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor can be used for monitoring a large-scale structure because of its advantage of multiplexing. In this study, FBG sensors were used for monitoring a composite beam structure, and its strains were measured at multiple points. Thereafter, a shape estimation technique based on the strains was studied. Particularly, a three-dimensional shape estimation technique was proposed for accurate structural health monitoring. A simple experiment was conducted to verify the performance of the shape estimation technique. The result revealed that the estimated shape of the composite beam structure was in agreement with the actual shape obtained after the deformation of the specimen. Additionally, the deflection at a specific point was verified by comparing the estimated and actual deformations measured using a micrometer.

A calibration technique is proposed to improve the performance of 2-D towed array shape estimation using the Kalman filter. In the case of using displacement sensors, 2-D hydrophone positions estimated by the Kalman filter are calculated by assuming that the adjacent hydrophones are horizontally equi-spaced so that maximum distance is equal to the array length. The assumption causes errors in estimating hydrophone positions. The proposed technique using linear model approximation or spline interpolation can reduce the errors by exploiting the fact that the whole length of array is preserved whatever the array shape is. The numerical experiments show that the proposed method is very effective.
