  • A comparative petal micromorphology of 15 taxa of tribe Sorbarieae was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to evaluate their taxonomic and systematic implication. The characteristics of both adaxial and abaxial side of petal epidermal cells such as shape, arrangement, anticlinal wall and cuticular sculpture were described in detail. The Sorbarieae petal epidermal cells were identified as papillate or conical papillate (PCS) and rectangular-rugose tabular (TRS). Three types of petal micromorphology were found within the tribe based on the cell patterns of adaxial and abaxial side. Type I. PCS-TRS, Type II. PCS-PCS, Type III. TRS-TRS (adaxial-abaxial side). The petal epidermal cell types, anticlinal cell wall, and cuticular sculpture represent not only taxonomical importance for identification between or within the genera but also systematic implication. Moreover, this study provides a relation between petal epidermal cell pattern and insect pollinator (entomophily; melittophily) as an additional case.

  • Principle component and emission localization of volatile compounds were investigated according to scent intensity of rose flower. Scent intensity in cultivars and bred-line of Rosa hybrida was divided into three levels; light ('Feel Lip', 'Venus Berry'), medium ('GR07-135'), strong ('Honey Blue'). The major volatile compounds were different depending on the cultivars and selected line; 3,5-dimethoxytoluene (DMT), benzene, 1,3,5-trimethoxy ('Feel Lip'), megastigma-4,6(Z),8(E)-triene ('Venus Berry'), DMT, benzene,1-ethenyl-4-methoxyand, phenylethylalcohol ('GR07-135') and germacrene-D, DMT ('Honey Blue'). The adaxial epidermal cells were conical papillate shape, whereas the abaxial epidermal cells were flat shape. The adaxial epidermal cells of 3 cultivars and 1 selected line were surrounded by thick cell wall and covered by waxy cuticle of 2 cultivars and 1 selected line (except 'Honey Blue'). The adaxial epidermal cells contained starches in 'Feel Lip', osmiophlic droplets in 'Venus Berry', starchs, plastids, vacuoles in 'GR07-135' and plastoglobules, plastids, vacuoles in 'Honey Blue'. Based on these results, it appears that plastids and vacuoles in adaxial epidermal cells with conical papillate shape are associated production and emission of volatile compounds in scent R. hybrida.

  • Phytoliths formed on the leaf-blades of the seventeen Oryza species were examined using back-scattered electron imaging. The resulting descriptions of the phytoliths became the basis for a new key to the species of the genus. This key includes features useful for specific identification related to the silica bodies originating from epidermal cells upon both the mid-vein and bulliform cell, as well as of phytoliths originating from papillae, prickle hairs, large and small trichomes, and stomatal apparatus. These detailed phytolith descriptions, back-scattered electron images, and keys to both adaxial and abaxial sides of leaves, can now be used in identifying phytoliths from archaeological samples as well as extant species of Oryza.

  • The microstructure of the leaf epidermis and trichomes of Fallopia sect. Reynoutria are examined using scanning electron microscopy. Fallopia sachalinensis was distinguished from other taxa in this section by its prominent epicuticular wax layer consisting of protruding wax rodlets. In addition, epicuticular rodlets of F. sachalinensis individuals from Ullung Island and Dok Island appear to be thinner than those from other regions, including Japan and Sakhalin. The stomatal size appears to be related to the ploidy level in the sect. Reynoutria, as the hexaploids, octoploids and dodecaploids tend to have larger stomata as compared to tetraploids. Three basic types of trichomes were found in the section; (1) conical unicellular trichomes, (2) uniseriate filiform trichome consisting of 1-8 cells, and (3) peltate glandular trichomes. The trichome types and their distribution appear to be useful in distinguishing the taxa in the section.

  • The patterns of adventitious root formation from cotyledons for each cultivar of soybeans were compared. The results of adventitious root formation in cultivars are classified as two groups; the first group showed the direct adventitious root formation, and the second group resulted in the callus and adventitious root formation. The cultivars that have much callus formation had less the adventitious root formation. The adventitious root formation in the cotyledonary explants was occured only at the inoculation of adaxial side. When adaxial and abaxial side was inoculated simultaneously, the adventitious roots were formed at the adaxial side. Thus, it suggests that there must be direction to some extent. Starch in the cotyledonary explants were more abundant at the 4 days after induction than at the early stage of the adventitious root formation, but the starch was not observed after 7 days, that the growth stage of adventitious roots.

  • Richardia brasiliensis Gomes was found in agricultural land in Susan-ri, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. Richardia L. is closely related to Diodia L. in Korea, those are confirmed to features of calyx, collora and fruit. This species is similar to R. scabra L., but it differs morphologically from the letter in surface structure of mericarp. The mericarp of R. brasiliensis has line like kneel at the adaxial, whereas R. scabra has groove at the adaxial. R. brasiliensis is recorded for the first time in this study and a morphological description, distribution map, and photographs are presented.

  • The distribution of the secretory ducts, fine structures of the secretory epithelial cells, and the ingredients of the metaplasmic inclusions were studied at light and electron microscopical levels in seeds, stems, leaves, and roots of ginseng. The secretory ducts occurred in the hypocotyl of the embryo, in the cortex of the roots, and also both inside and outside of each vascular bundle in the stems and leaves. Especially, it is considered that the circular layers of the secretory ducts in roots may represent their ages. The epithelial cell has well developed nucleolus, mitochondria and smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Sudanophyl and osmiophilic inclusions were found in the epithelial cytoplasm and duct lumen. But these inclusions were not observed when extracted with pyridin or alcohol. In contrast to the lumen with red color, the epithelial cells were blue in color as stained with nile blue, suggesting that the former inclusions are neutral lipid while the latter are acidic lipid. The electron density of the cell inclusions was quite high as fixed with osmium tetroxide, indicating that most of these secretory materials seem to be unsaturated lipid. Therefore, since ginseng secretory ducts are closely associated with the lipid metabolism, it should be called lipid canal or lipid duct.

  • Cuticle micromorphology of 22 species of Quercus and outgroup were examined by the SEM. Twenty-two species selected each two or three species in all section of the genus Quercus. The genus Trigonobalanus and Alnus are selected as outgroups. Ten characters of the inner surface and eight characters of the outer surface of the cuticle have been described. Some characters, such as the present of papillae, arrangement of subsidiary cell, shape of anticlinal cell wall are considered important character for infrageneric classification. A parsimony analysis of 18 characters resulted in 72 most parsimonious trees with its lengths of 66 steps. The topology obtained from the analysis showed two major lineages. Subgenus Cyclobalanopsis formed one clade by 75% and subgenus Quercus formed another clade by 57% bootstrap value. Based on the cuticle morphology, the two subgenus delimitation of Camus was supported. However, sect. Erythrobalanus and sect. Cerris formed one group, and sect. Lepidobalanus formed polytomy.
