  • In this study, we aimed to determine the seasonal distribution and biomass of fish in Samcheok marine ranching area (MRA) of Republic of Korea using the scientific echosounder. Fish trap and gillnets were used to identify fish species in the survey area, and dB-difference method was used to estimation the spatio-temporal distribution and density of fish. The results showed that the dominant species in Samcheok marine ranching area were Chelidonichthys spinosus, Sebastes inermis, Hexagrammos otakii and Tribolodon hakonensis. The spatio-temporal distribution of fish showed that fish had a relatively higher distribution at night than during the day. In addition, the density of fish by season was highest at night in July at 34.22 g/m2 and lowest in April at 0.42 g/m2.

  • A coastal marine ranching project in Uleungdo had been conducted for 5 years from 2013 to 2017 with investment costs of 5 billion won, for the special purpose of the deployment of artificial reefs, the release of young fishes. The paper focuses on an ex-post analysis of the economic feasibility for the project after completing the project, which is apart from a preliminary viability. For economic analysis, the economic benefits are derived from direct benefits including increasing effects of fisheries income and saving effects of harvesting costs, and indirect benefits including increasing effects of recreational fishing and preservation effects of coastal marine ecosystems while economic costs include releasing and purchasing costs of artificial reef and juvenile fish, R&D costs, maintenance costs and harvesting costs. The result shows that the project should not be accepted according to NPV=-0.125 billion won, IRR=4.5% and B/C ratio=0.98 under Scenario 1 which considers direct benefits and indirect benefits excluding the preservation values, while the project should be accepted under Scenario 2 indicating NPV=30.9 billion won, IRR=11.3% and B/C ratio=1.49 which considers the direct benefits as well as the indirect ones including the preservation values, based on 4.5% of the social rate of discount.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the auditory threshold of the scorpion fish Sebastiscus marmoratus which was suitable for Marine ranching by a classical respiatory conditioning technique using a sound coupled with a delayed electric shock. The thresholds were determined by analyzing the electrocardiogram. The auditory thresholds were observed among the 12 fish with much difference from 100Hz to 300Hz. The audible range of the scorpion fish extended from 80 to 800Hz with a peak sensitivity of 90㏈(0㏈= $1\mu$Pa) at 100Hz. As the frequency became higher than 300Hz, the auditory threshold increased rapidly. The scorpion fish was least sensitive to sound of 500Hz among 6 frequency points and the value was about 12㏈.

  • The objective of this study was to search the attributes and calculate the weights among the attributes considered to choose the best thing of various tourism resources focused on marine ranch of Chagwido in Jeju region. Through this analysis, this research provides the information for establishing development plan of Chagwido. To achieve this goal, this study analyzed the priority of experience tourism through the experts' survey with AHP methodology. The result showed that ecological experience (30.6%), fishing activities (23.1%), release of fish seed (14.9%) and culture experience (14.9%) among various tourism resources in marin ranch of Chagwido were in order of importance. Thus ecological experiences, activities related to fishing facilities and programs should be introduced in order to develop the marine ranch of Chagwido.

  • Monitoring for the quality of coastal water is necessary to improve its biological resources and to maintain healthy environments. We measured the concentrations of phenols, nine polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), tributyltin (TBT) in surface water at 5 stations and the concentrations of mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr (VI)), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) in surface water of 10 stations in Tongyeong marine ranching ground of Korea in August, 2003. The concentrations of analytes were determined as follows: phenols: 1.6$\sim$2.8 ppb, PCBs: not detected (ND), Hg: <0.1 ppb, Cr (VI): 0.01$\sim$5.32 ppb, Cd: ND$\sim$0.41 ppb and Pb: 0.43$\sim$2.60 ppb. These concentrations satisfied the standards of human health protection in coastal water by Ministry of Environment, Republic of Korea as follows: phenols; 5 ppb, PCBs: 0.5 ppb, Hg: 0.5 ppb, Cr (VI): 50 ppb, Cd: 10 ppb and Pb: 50 ppb. TBT was not listed in the standards. The concentrations of Sn in TBT analyzed in sea water of Tongyeong marine ranching ground were in the range of ND$\sim$0.0273 ppb which are similar with the values of 8$\sim$35 ng Sn $L^{-1}$ (0.008$\sim$0.035 ppb) in Chinhae Bay studied by Shim et al.. Therefore, the quality of sea water in Tongyeong marine ranching ground was safe enough to protect human health.
