  • It was analysed that spatial and temporal change patterns of general water quality constituents were measured monthly from 2002 to 2005 in Jumunjin Harbour. The measured constituents are temperature, salinity, pH, SS and DO. Concentration difference of upper lower layer for general water quality constituents was small. Temperature and DO concentration show the clear difference at temporal concentration change pattern, but SS, pH and salinity have irregular change pattern. Also, water quality improvement effect of seawater exchange facilities and sewage treatment plants is analysed quantitatively using averaged spatial and temporal data set. From this result, it is found that effect of sewage treatment plants is small and seawater exchange facilities at zone 1 and 2 is clear concentration reduction effect to be about 26% and 16%, respectively. After sewage treatment plants operation, DO concentration reduced about 10% at inner zone of Jumunjin Harbour, the other side, after seawater exchange facilities concentration DO concentration increased about 10%. DO concentration at 2005 estimated little than that of 2002, it is concluded that a yearly change of DO concentration has about 10%.

  • Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) plays a dominant role in absorbing UV-VIS light and is also important in the biogeochemical carbon cycle due to the production of carbon dioxide from photo-oxidation at the sea surface in marine environments. Since absorption by CDOM was recently found to be responsible for increasing the energy absorbed in the mixed layer by 40 % over pure seawater, the importance of CDOM absorption in seawater for increasing sea surface temperature has come to be well recognized. We measured aCDOM and the absorption characteristics of CDOM during spring 2012 and 2014 in the southwestern East Sea. Distribution of CDOM in spring 2012 and 2014 was compared and S value was used to find the source of CDOM in the study area. As a result, the average $a_{CDOM}$ was $0.237m^{-1}$ ($0.009{\sim}0.988m^{-1}$) and the average S value was $16{\mu}m^{-1}$,which shows coastal properties. Also a positive correlation between Chl a and CDOM was observed ($r^2=0.34$), with an especially strong correlation near coastal stations. aCDOM in 2014 was about 40 % higher than aCDOM in 2012 during spring in the study area. This difference in aCDOM concentration resulted not only from annual variation but also from stratification and photobleaching in late spring 2012. This observation implies the possibility of flux of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as a result of photo-oxidation in the East Sea.

  • This paper shows the results of a study that predicts changes in seawater conditions in sea farms using machine learning-based long short term memory (LSTM) algorithms. Hardware was implemented using dissolved oxygen, salinity, nitrogen ion concentration, and water temperature measurement sensors to collect seawater condition information from sea farms, and transferred to a cloud-based Firebase database using LoRa communication. Using the developed hardware, seawater condition information around fish farms in Tongyeong and Geoje was collected, and LSTM algorithms were applied to learning results using these actual datasets to obtain predictive results showing 87% accuracy. Flask and REST APIs were used to provide users with predictive results for each of the four parameters, including dissolved oxygen. These predictive results are expected to help fishermen reduce significant damage caused by fish group death by providing changes in sea conditions in advance.

  • The hydrographic data collected at three different times July, 1994, May, 1995 and June, 1996 around Taean peninsula in the mid-Yellow Sea off Korea, well known for the well-defined surface thermal fronts in summer, were analyzed. In the vertically well-mixed area where water depths varied from 15 m depth to 60 m depth, the temperature difference in the water column was less than $1^{\circ}C$. The temperature observed in the vertically well-mixed area was reversely related with the water depths and the coldest surface water was always observed over the deep channel with the depth of more than 50m, which developed southwestward off the promontory of Taean peninsula, irrespective of the observation period. The strengths of surface thermal front observed in June were much stronger than those in July, even though the surface temperature of stratified area were nearly the same as in July. These observed features could be explained as follows: A major physical process for the formation of the surface thermal front is the vertical mixing of water column but the detailed thermal structure in the study area depend on the physical parameters such as the water depth in the vertically well-mixed side and the vertical thermal structure in the stratified side.

  • The effects of temperature and salinity on hatching rate of fertilized egg were examined to develop the method for the efficient seed production in fleshy shrimp, Penaeus chinensis. At the temperature ranging from $20^{\circ}C\;to\;24^{\circ}C$, the hatching rate increased with temperature and the highest hatching rate $(95.5\%)$ occurred at $24^{\circ}C$. But, with the temperature above $26^{\circ}C$, the hatching rate decreased suddenly, and at $30^{\circ}C$, the egg did not hatch at all. The hatching rate increased with salinity within the range of $20\%_{\circ}\;to\;31\%_{\circ}$ and the highest hatching rate $(95.5\%)$ occurred at $31\%_{\circ}$. However, with the salinity above $31\%_{\circ}$, the rate decreased abruptly, and it was only $25.5\%\;at\;40\%_{\circ}$. The hatching speed of egg was the fastest at $24^{\circ}C$. The hatching rate at $24^{\circ}C$ with the salinity of $31\%_{\circ}\;was\;30.5\%$ within 18hrs of the hatching experiment and it attained to $95.5\%$ within 48hrs of the hatching experiment. At $24^{\circ}C$, the hatching rate with the salinity of $30\~31\%_{\circ}$ is 1,2 times higher than that of egg with the salinity of $33\~35\%_{\circ}$.

  • The tendency of metabolism in oyster, Crassostrea gigas, was investigated in relation to the water temperature and salinity. Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion were measured and O:N ratio were calculated according to the water temperature from February 2007 to September 2008 and body size. The relationship between oxygen consumption and body weight has been examined in C. gigas. The weight-specific oxygen consumption rate (mg $O_2$/g/h) varied inversely with size. Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion increased with an increase in water temperature. O:N ratio measured in this study ranged from 8 to 40 under ordinary sea water and the ratio was 8 at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16 at $10^{\circ}C$. This indicates that oyster mainly use the protein as the primary catabolic substrate during gametogenesis. Lower O:N ratio in winter suggests that oysters have to meet their energy demand by metabolizing protein to survive in stressful conditions such as low temperature and lack of sufficient food supply. This studies will provide the basic data for oyster culture farm in assessing the carrying capacity and sustainable management.

  • Two hydrographic surveys along with direct current measurements using drogues and moored current meters were conducted in Cheju Strait during April and May, 1983. The data clearly demonstrate that a branch of the Kuroshio characterized by high temperature and high salinity enters the Cheju Strait after turning around the western coast of Cheju-Do. The width of the current turning west of Cheju-Do is about 60 km and reduces to 20∼30 km in the strait, resulting in a high speed(>10 cm/s) at the western entrance and in the middle of the strait, compared with a low speed (>5 cm/s) west of Cheju-Do. The Tsushima Current water also originating from the Kuroshio shows its influence in the eastern part of the Cheju Strait. Thermohaline fronts formed between the warm current waters and the coastal waters suggest the southward extension of the Yellow Sea Coastal Water west of the Cheju Strait. A warming of the warm current waters occurs in May, while a cooling takes place in other areas. The major freshening and cooling of water take place in the middle of the Cheju Strait in May due to the intrusion of cold and low salinity water from the west of the Cheju Strait.

  • With groundwater data of seawater intrusion monitoring network in coastal areas of Korea's main land, we analyzed types of seawater intrusion through the coastal aquifer. The data including groundwater level, temperature and electrical conductivity obtained from 45 monitoring wells at 25 watershed regions were evaluated. Based on statistical analysis, correlation analysis and variation type analysis, groundwater levels were mainly affected by rainfall and artificial pumping. About 78% of the monitoring wells showed average temperature higher than $15^{\circ}C$ and about 58% of them showed minimum variations less than $0.2^{\circ}C$. Electrical conductivities showed a large magnitude of variation and irregular characteristics compared with groundwater levels and temperatures. Average electrical conductivities lower than $2,000\;{\mu}S/cm$ were observed at 28 monitoring wells while those of higher than $10,000\;{\mu}S/cm$ were done at 9 monitoring wells. From the cross-correlation analysis, groundwater levels were mostly affected by precipitation while temperature and electrical conductivity showed very low correlation. Meanwhile tidal variations strongly affected the groundwater levels comparing to precipitation. We classified the long-term monitoring data according to variation types such as constant process, linear trend, cyclic variation, impulse, step function and ramp. Impulse type was dominant for variations of groundwater level, which was largely affected by rainfall or artificial pumping, the constant process was dominant for temperature. Compared with groundwater level and temperature, electrical conductivities showed various types like linear trend, step function and ramp. According to the discrepancy of variation characteristics for monitoring data at each well in the same region, periodical analysis of monitoring data is essentially required.

  • The ark shell, Scapharca broughtonii were collected from the Jinhae bay in Kyungnam, Korea from April 2006 to October 2007. To assess how much they have tolerance against hypoxia under the compound condition of temperature and salinity, survivorship, oxygen consumption rate and external features of Scapharca broughtonii were measured, The 7 days-$LC_{50}$ of dissolved oxygen (DO) for Scapharca broughtonii at $15^{\circ}C$-ordinary sea water and $26{\pm}1$ psu was 1.98mg/L (confidence limit: 1,45-2.39 mg/L) and 2.63mg/L (confidence limit: 1.76-3.37mg/L) respectively. Whereas 3 days-$LC_{50}$ at $25^{\circ}C$-ordinary sea water was 3.89mg/L (confidence limit: 3.36-4.55 mg/L) and 4 days-$LC_{50}$ at $25^{\circ}C-26{\pm}1$ psu was 3.74mg/L (confidence limit: 3.19-4,43 mg/L). Oxygen consumption rate with each experimental group was decreased during the period exposed to hypoxia. To recovery, they were replaced to ordinary and oxygen consumption rate was increased a little, but all died, The color of the umbo of shell in Scapharca broughtonii was changed dark during hypoxia. These data will provide important fundamental information for examining the causes of mass mortality of shellfish in the summer.
