In this study, seawater intrusion was assessed employing a kind of biological parameters such as Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis while lab-prepared reclaimed water was recharged to prevent seawater intrusion. Chemical factors indicating seawater intrusion such as Cl$^-$, Ca$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$ and specific conductivity were also simultaneously investigated where an ion exchange between a matrix in artificial aquifer and cations in solution was estimated. Both Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis were shown to be very sensitive against degree of salinity during saline water intrusion. Enterococcus faecalis more strongly resisted against salinity than that of Escherichia coli. The ratio of Enterococcus faecalis divided by E. coli in the process of seawater intrusion increased up to more than 50$\sim$100 times in 18 hours whereas E. coli was died off more than 90% during pumping and recharge rate kept at 10 mL/min. However, when the rates of both recharge and pumping was kept at 5 mL/min, Enterococcus faecalis / Escherichia coli was sustained in the range of 2.5$\sim$5.0, while Escherichia coli showed dimished death rate. Chemical factors such as Cl$^-$, Ca$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$ and specific conductivity showed more than 0.9 of high correlation each other well explaining the degree of seawater intrusion. The degree of ion exchange between artificial aquifer and saline water can be efficiently interpreted by both minus $\Delta$Na, $\Delta$Mg variation and positive $\Delta$Ca variation.

In an effort to improve water quality, the South Korean government has implemented measures to increase seawater circulation in Saemangeum Lake. We analyzed the effect of increasing the frequency of seawater circulation based on salinity levels and bottom water exchange in the lake, using an environmental fluid dynamics code model. When the sluice gate opening and shutting frequency increased from once to twice per day, the internal water level of Saemangeum Lake increased by up to ~0.7 m. The salinity increased by 2.12 psu near the western breakwater and decreased by 1.18 psu near the freshwater inlet. We analyzed the extent of bottom water exchange using a particle tracing method and observed that the residual rate of particles shallower than 5 m in water depth decreased by 2.52% in Case 2 (opening and shutting twice per day) compared to Case 1 (opening and shutting once per day). This indicates that increasing the frequency of sluice gate opening and shutting would promote enhanced bottom water exchange. Consequently, the increased salinity and bottom water exchange associated with increased seawater circulation are expected to improve water quality in Saemangeum Lake.
Based on the data collected during January of 1963, 1964 and 1965, heat transfer from the sea to the air over the south-western part of the Japan Sea was evaluated by the formula of Jacobs. The mean sensible heat transfer and the rate of evaporation in the mild winter of 1964 were 360ly day$\^$-1/ and 8.1mm day$\^$-1/, respectively. However, these values increased as much as 690ly day$\^$-1/ and 14.4mm day$\^$-1/ in the severe winter of 1963. The heat hudget of the Japan Sea in January were related to the magnitude of cold water mass formed in August in the Korea Strait.

Tidal circulation in a closed bay using a variation of bottom roughness was investigated through the numerical experiments based on a finite difference multi-level model. Various distributions of bottom roughness in the bay were implemented to determine their effects. It hadbeen determined that residual currents can be generated from the differences of the bottom roughness between streaming and reverse flow directions. The magnitude of residual currents and volume flow rate increase when the relative ratio of bottom roughness between streaming and reverse flow directions increase. Circulation in the closed bay is also improved by the employment of the change of bottom roughness.

Five parameters such as the entrance size of the front wall, conduit size, wave period, wave height and the width of water pool were selected to estimate the inflow rate, which is basic and essential input data to design seawater exchange breakwater with a submerged mound by conducting hydraulic model experiments. In the results of multiple regression analysis, log-log equation showed a good agreement rather than linear equation and the estimation of inflow rate was well done with only two parameters except entrance size of the front wall, wave period and the width of water pool. Finally, non-dimensional flow rate equation is derived.
