  • We practiced fresh water injection test to identify its applibility as a method of seawater intrusion mitigation technique, and monitored the change of borehole fluid conductivity and the behavior of injected fresh water using borehole multichannel electrical conductivity monitoring and well-logging, and DC resistivity and SP monitoring at the surface. Well-logging and multichannel EC monitoring showed the decrease of fluid conductivity due to fresh water injection. We note that such an injection effect lasts more than several month which means the applibility of fresh water injection as a seawater intrusion control technique. Although SP monitoring did not show meaningful results because of weather condition during monitoring and the defects of electrodes due to long operation time, DC resistivity monitoring showed its effectiveness and applicability as a monitoring and assessment techniques of injection test by means of imaging the behavior and the front of fresh water body in terms of the increase of resistivity with reasonable resolution. In conclusion, we note that geophysical techniques can be an effective method of monitoring and evaluation of fresh water injection test, and expect that fresh water injection may be an practical method for the mitigation of seawater intrusion when applied with optimal design of injection well distribution and injection rate based on geophysical evaluation.

  • This study is a follow-up study of vulnerable areas according to the vulnerability assessment of groundwater resource management in Korea. In this study, an optimal operation plan for groundwater resource management was proposed for areas vulnerable to groundwater resource management in Korea derived from previous studies. Prior to presenting the optimal operation plan for groundwater resource management, this study grasped the current status of changes in groundwater level and seawater penetration area for vulnerable areas using MODFLOW, a groundwater flow analysis program. As a result of the analysis using basic data for 10 years from 2009 to 2018, the groundwater level fell and the sea infiltration area increased. The final purpose of this study, the optimal operation plan for groundwater resource management, was selected as a total of four alternatives that can be expected to have positive effects to increase groundwater level and reduce seawater penetration. As a result of analyzing the amount of change in groundwater level and seawater penetration by applying the selected optimal operation plan, positive effects were found in all methods. It is expected that the optimal operation plan for groundwater resource management proposed in this study will be applied not only to vulnerable areas of groundwater resources in Korea but also to areas requiring development to establish efficient groundwater resource management measures.

  • This study conducted numerical simulations using LES-WASS-3D ver. 2.0 to analyze the seawater intrusion characteristics of the incident waves in a coastal aquifer. LES-WASS-3D directly analyzed the nonlinear interaction between the seawater and freshwater in a coastal aquifer, as well as the wave-current interaction in the coastal area. First, the LES-WASS-3D results were compared with the existing experimental results for the mean water level under wave action in the coastal aquifer and seawater penetration into the coastal aquifer. The mean water level, shape and position of the seawater-freshwater interface, and intrusion distance were well implemented in the results. This confirmed the validity and effectiveness of LES-WASS-3D. The overall seawater penetration distance increases in the coastal aquifer as a result of wave set-up and run-up in the swash zone caused by continuous wave actions, and it increases with the wave height and period. Furthermore, a numerical verification was performed by comparing the suggested existing structure and newly suggested curtain wall as a measure against seawater penetration. An existing underground dam showed a better effect with increased height. Additionally, the suggested curtain wall had a better effect when the embedded depth was increased.

  • Recently, much attention has focused on the study of eco-friendly concrete using recycled by-products for protecting marine ecosystem and durability of concrete exposed to marine condition. This study evaluated the durabilities of 4 different type of concrete mixtures(Control, Marine, Porous, New slag) with the seawater resistance by marine environment exposure experiment and freeze-thaw resistance, resistance to chloride ion penetration considering severe deterioration environment. In this study, we conducted seawater resistance using compressive strength according to the age(7/28/56 days) of specimen and curing conditions(standard(fresh water), tidal, immersion, artificial seawater). The results show that compressive strength of concrete exposed to marine environment exposure condition was lower than those of the standard curing condition. Also, compressive strength of New slag using eco-friendly materials for protecting marine ecosystem was lower than those of other concretes, there is need to improve the performance of New slag. The results for freeze-thaw resistance showed that all mixtures have excellent, but the Porous and New slag were lower than others. Also, the more improved resistance to chloride ion penetration than those of the Marine was measured in the New slag regardless of curing condition.

  • Long term changes of hydraulic properties and tensile strength of natural fiber drain (NFD) are analyzed and compared with those of intact NFD's. NFD was buried in distilled water, two types of seawater and clay soils obtained in southern and western parts of Korea, Kwang-Yang and Si-hwa. Specimens are taken out in 0, 3, 9 and 18 month intervals, and durability tests of the NFD are performed. Hydraulic conductivity of the NFD samples decreased compared with that of intact NFD samples, because clay particles easily passed to coarsened mesh of filters and clogged the porous stone below and reduced hydraulic conductivity. Tensile strength of drains from the soil bucket is reduced larger than those in the seawater and the distilled water. Strength reduction was higher in summer than winter.

  • Geotextile is one of the most useful and effective polymer material in civil construction works and the main function of geotextile is separation, reinforcement, filtering and drainage. Recently, because of the shortage of natural rock, traditional forms of river and coastal structures have become very expensive to build and maintain. Therefore, the materials used in hydraulic and coastal structures are changing from the traditional rubble and concrete systems to the cheaper materials and systems. One of these alternatives employs geotextile tube technology in the construction of coastal and shore protection structures, such as embankment, see dyke, groins, jetties, detached breakwaters and so on. Geotextile tube technology has changed from being an alternative construction technique and, in fact, has advanced to become the most effective solution of choice. This paper presents case history of sea dyke filter construction using geotextile tube mattress and also, various issues related to the tube mattress design and construction technology.

  • This study has been performed to test the flowability and filling ability of high flowing concrete as well as distribution of aggregate and pore of core specimen, heat of hydration, compressive strength and core strength of concrete. In addition, the resistance to chloride ion penetration and chemical solutionof concrete was tested in order to evaluate the resistance to sea water of concrete and its application of high flowing concrete using blended low heat cement in the field of Seohae Grand Bridge. The properties of high flowing concrete with blended low heat cement were compared with ordinary 25-240-15 concrete using Type V cement. As the results of this study, the flowability and filling ability of high flowing concrete with blended low heat cement is satisfied without vibration. Though the cement content of high flowing concrete with blended low heat cement was 400kg/m$^2$, the rising temperature of it was relatively lower than that of the ordinary 25-240-15 concrete with Type V cement. Also, the compressive of high flowing concrete with blended low heat cement is similar to that of the ordinary 25-240-15 concrete with Type V cement.

  • Concrete prevents corrosion of reinforcing bars due to its strong alkalinity. However, in the sea, strong alkali components with a pH of 12 to 13 are eluted, which adversely affects the ecological environment and growth of marine organisms. In this study, the mechanical properties and durability of the low alkali mortar were evaluated for the development of a low alkali mortar for the 3D printed artificial reefs. As a result of evaluation of strength characteristics, the α-35 mixture, which were produced with fly ash, silica fume and α-hemihydrate gypsum, satisfied the strength requirement 27 MPa in terms of compressive strength. As a result of pH measurement, it was found that mixing with alpha-type hemihydrate gypsum resulted in minimizing pH due to the the formation of calcium sulfate instead of calcium hydroxide production. As a result of the chloride ion penetration resistance test, the α-35 mixture exhibited the best performance, 3844C. As a result of measuring the length change over time, the α-35 mixture showed the shrinkage 33.5% less compared to the Plain mix.
