Three-dimensional (3-D) optimally-interpolated sea surface temperature (SST) field was produced by using AQUA/AMSR-E satellite data, and its limitations were described by comparing the temporal average of sea surface temperatures. The 3-D OI (Optimum Interpolation) SST showed a small error of less than $0.05^{\circ}C$ in the central North Pacific, but yielded large errors of greater than $0.4^{\circ}C$ at the coastal area where the satellite microwave data were not available. OI SST composite around pixels with no observation due to heavy rainfall or cloudy pixels had estimation errors of $0.1-0.15^{\circ}C$. Comparison with temporal means showed a tendency that overall OI SSTs were underestimated around heavy cloudy pixels and smoothed out by reducing the magnitude of SST fronts. In the low-latitude areas near the equator, OI SST field produced discontinuity, originated from the window size for the OI procedure. This was mainly caused by differences in the spatial scale of oceanic features. Infernal Rossby deformation radius, as a measure of spatial stale, showed dominant latitudinal variations with O(1) difference in the North Pacific. This study suggests that OI SST methodology should consider latitudinally-varying size of window and the characteristics of spatial scales of oceanic phenomena with substantial dependency on latitude and vertical structure of density.

This study examines marine heat wave (MHW) in the Northeast Asia region from 2012 to 2021, utilizing geostationary satellite Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS)/Meteorological Imager sensor (MI) and GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK-2A)/Advanced Meteorological Imager sensor (AMI) Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data. Our analysis has identified an increasing trend in the frequency and intensity of MHW events, especially post-2018, with the year 2020 marked by significantly prolonged and intense events. The statistical validation using Optimal Interpolation (OI) SST data and satellite SST data through T-test assessment confirmed a significant rise in sea surface temperatures, suggesting that these changes are a direct consequence of climate change, rather than random variations. The findings revealed in this study serve the necessity for ongoing monitoring and more granular analysis to inform long-term responses to climate change. As the region is characterized by complex topography and diverse climatic conditions, the insights provided by this research are critical for understanding the localized impacts of global climate dynamics.

Modeling for outliers in time series was carried out using the MSL and extreme high, low tide levels (EHL, HLL) data set in the Busan and Mokpo stations. The time-series model is seasonal ARIMA model including the components of the AO (additive outliers) and LS (level shift). The optimal model was selected based on the AIC value and the model parameters were estimated using the 'tso' function (in 'tsoutliers' package of R). The main results by the model application, i.e.. outliers and level shift detections, are as follows. (1) The two AO are detected in the Busan monthly EHL data and the AO magnitudes were estimated to 65.5 cm (by typhoon MAEMI) and 29.5 cm (by typhoon SANBA), respectively. (2) The one level shift in 1983 is detected in Mokpo monthly MSL data, and the LS magnitude was estimated to 21.2 cm by the Youngsan River tidal estuary barrier construction. On the other hand, the RMS errors are computed about 1.95 cm (MSL), 5.11 cm (EHL), and 6.50 cm (ELL) in Busan station, and about 2.10 cm (MSL), 11.80 cm (EHL), and 9.14 cm (ELL) in Mokpo station, respectively.
Sea surface temperature (SST), which plays an important role in climate change and global environmental change, can be divided into skin sea surface temperature (SSST) observed by satellite infrared sensors and the bulk temperature of sea water (BSST) measured by instruments. As sea surface temperature products distributed by many overseas institutions represent temperatures at different depths, it is essential to understand the relationship between the SSST and the BSST. In this study, we constructed an observation system of infrared radiometer onboard a marine research vessel for the first time in Korea to measure the SSST. The calibration coefficients were prepared by performing the calibration procedure of the radiometer device in the laboratory prior to the shipborne observation. A series of processes were applied to calculate the temperature of the layer of radiance emitted from the sea surface as well as that from the sky. The differences in skin-bulk temperatures were investigated quantitatively and the characteristics of the vertical structure of temperatures in the upper ocean were understood through comparison with Himawari-8 geostationary satellite SSTs. Comparison of the skin-bulk temperature differences illustrated overall differences of about 0.76℃ at Jangmok port in the southern coast and the offshore region of the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula from 21 April to May 6, 2020. In addition, the root-mean-square error of the skin-bulk temperature differences showed daily variation from 0.6℃ to 0.9℃, with the largest difference of 0.83-0.89℃ at 1-3 KST during the daytime and the smallest difference of 0.59℃ at 15 KST. The bias also revealed clear diurnal variation at a range of 0.47-0.75℃. The difference between the observed skin sea surface temperature and the satellite sea surface temperature showed a mean square error of approximately 0.74℃ and a bias of 0.37℃. The analysis of this study confirmed the difference in the skin-bulk temperatures according to the observation depth. This suggests that further ocean shipborne infrared radiometer observations should be carried out continuously in the offshore regions to understand diurnal variation as well as seasonal variations of the skin-bulk SSTs and their relations to potential causes.

Based on the ICE-3G and ICE-5G ice models, we predicted the velocities of crustal uplift caused by Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) at 39 tide gauge sites operated by Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration (KHOA). We also divided the Korean peninsula in the ranges of $32-38.5^{\circ}N$ and $124-132^{\circ}E$ in $0.5^{\circ}{\times}0.5^{\circ}$ grids, and computed the GIA velocities at each grid point. We found that the average uplift rates due to GIA in South Korea were 0.33 and 1.21 mm/yr for ICE-3G and ICE-5G, respectively. Because the GIA rates were relatively high at ~1 mm/yr when the updated ice model ICE-5G was used, we concluded that the GIA effect cannot be neglected when we compute the absolute sea level (ASL) rates around the Korean peninsula. In this study, we corrected the ICE-5G GIA velocities from the relative sea level rates provided by KHOA and we computed the ASL rates at 13 tide gauge stations. As a result, we found that the average ASL velocity around the Korean peninsula was 5.04 mm/yr. However, the ASL rates near Jeju island were abnormally higher than the other areas and the average was 8.84 mm/yr.

There's little to obstacles obstructing communication in the sky. There are nearly fixed obstacles obstructing communication on the ground. But communication disruption can be occur frequently and unexpectedly on the sea surface. Especially, it is difficult for a small station which can be greatly affected by waves and low antenna height to secure the LOS for radio communication. In this paper, LOS and minimum antenna height is calculated due to changing wave height and Tx/Rx antenna height on the sea surface.

Population and urban development along the coast is growing in South Korea, and particularly sea level rise is likely to increase the vulnerability of coastal areas. This study aims to investigate the sea level rise through Mann-Kendall(MK) test, ordinary linear regression(OR) and quantile regression analysis(QRA) with sea level data at the 20 tide stations along the coast of Korean Peninsula. First, statistically significant long-term trends were analysed using a non-parametric MK test and the test indicated statistically significant trends for 18 and 10 stations at the 5% significance level in the annual mean value of sea level and the annual maximum value of sea level, respectively. The QRA method showed better performance in terms of characterizing the degree of trend. QRA showed that an average annual rise in mean sea level is about 1-6 mm/year, and an average rise in maximum sea level is about 1-20 mm. It was found that upward convergent and upward divergent were a representative change given the nine-category distributional changes. We expect that in future work we will address nonstationarities with respect to sea level that were identified above, and develop a nonstationary frequency analysis with climate change scenarios.

Seawater intrusion phenomenons of coastal area happen by natural or artificial factor. For example, density difference of seawater and fresh water, surface of the water change by tidal current, pumping, aggregate picking from mouth of a river, large scale reclamation in water area business etc. This research analyzed effect that groundwater TDS changed by pumping. As a result, it was expose that TDS density increases by sudden inflow of seawater when do pumping up more than $200m^3/day$. Finally, We are expected to prevent calamity by seawater intrusion in coastal area through this study and propose optimum pumping amount to use groundwater safety.
