  • Plasma arc cutting is a fusion cutting process in which a gas constricted arc is employed to produce high temperature, high velocity jet at the workpiece. Even though the plasma arc cutting has been wid¬ely used in the industry, very little work has been done on the analysis of the process. In this paper, the kerf width was numerically analyzed by soving the temperature distribution in base metal under consideration of the latent heat effect. In modelling the heat flow problem, the heat intensity of the plasma arc was assumed to have a Gaussion distribution in the transverse direction and expone¬ntially decreasing in the thickness direction. The thermal efficiency and the heat input ratio of the top surface were experimentally deterimned for various thickness and cutting conditions, and used in numerical calculation of the kerf width. The experimental results were in eonsiderabely good agreement with the theoretically predicted kerf width.

  • The present study was analytically and experimentally carried out to predict the absorption characteristics on combined heat and mass transfer process in a vertical falling film of variable absorbers. Heat and mass transfer enhancements were analytically investigated. Effects of geometric parameters by insert device (spring) and corrugate, flow pattern on absorption performances has been also investigated. Especially, the optimal values of absorber geometry (ID=22.8mm, L=1150m) and kinetic variables (solution flow rate, flow pattern) for maximum absorption performance has been predicted by the numerical analysis. The maximum absorption performance in a numerical analysis and experiment was shown at the wavy-flow by insert device (spring).

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of openings on the structural behavior of SC walls. The FEM program ABAQUS was used in this analytical study. The main parameters were the locations and sizes of the openings: a total of 20 locations and a total of four opening sizes were adopted. The analysis results were compared with the results of the currently applied evaluation methods. The strength reduction factor method may be used to safely design SC walls with openings. The strength reduction factor of the effective strut method is more similar to that of the analysis results.

  • This paper presents an efficient and accurate method for nonlinear analysis of frame structures by idealized structural unit method. The main idea behind the present method is to minimize the computational effort by reducing the number of unknowns. An explicit form of the tangential elastic stiffness matrix of the element is derived by the principle of virtual work. The ultimate limit state of the element is judged on the basis of the formation of a plastic hinge mechanism. The elasto-plasto-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is derived by plastic node method and the post-ultimate stiffness equation is formulated under a simple analytic consideration. A comparison between the present solution and the existing experimental and other numerical result for unit column member and simple frame structure is made. If is clear from the result of this study that the present method is very useful because the computing time required is very small while giving the accurate solution.

  • This paper presents a back-calculation technique leer the prediction of the behavior of earth wall inserted in multi-layered soil deposit. The soil properties are back-calculated from the measured displacement at each construction stage and the behavior of earth wall far the next construction stage is predicted using back-calculated soil properties. For multi-layered soil deposit, the back-calculation would be very difficult due to the increase in the number of variables. In this study, to solve this difficulty, the back-calculation was performed successively from the lowest layer to the upper layers. An efficient elasto-plastic beam-column analysis was used for forward analysis to minimize the computation time of iterative back-calculation procedure. The coefficients of subgrade reaction and lateral earth pressure necessary for the formation of p-y curve were selected as back calculation variables, and to minimize the effect of abnormal behavior of the wall which might be caused by any unexpected action during construction, the difference between measured displacement increment and computed displacement increment at each construction stages is used as the objective function of optimization. The constrained sequential linear programming was used for the optimization technique to found values of variables minimizing the objective function. The proposed method in this study was verified using numerically generated data and measured field data.

  • The grain burn-back analysis has been performed for the internal ballistics analysis code to be used for the optimal design of the space launch vehicles. The grain burn-back has been used to calculate the burning surface that is essential to the internal ballistics. The calculation of internal ballistics code used in the optimal design is repeated until satisfying the required performance through the change of the design parameter. Therefore, the burn-back method applied to the internal ballistics analysis should be easy to change the design parameter and calculation time should be short. In this study, a burn-back analysis code has been developed using the analysis method. Also, geometric parameters of the grain have been selected and organized. The developed code has been verified by comparison of results of a numerical method.

  • Composites are finding increasing use in a wide variety of engineering applications due to their outstanding mechanical properties. A number of studies have focused on the development of new materials as well as the response of composite structures to static and dynamic loads by assuming the external driving forces to be deterministic. However, there ate many situations in practice where the exciting forces vary randomly. In this work, the nonlinear response of laminated composite plates excited by stochastic loading is studied by the finite element method. Classical, first-order and third-order shear theories for plates are used in the finite element formulation. Since most composites exhibit significant nonlinearity in the shear stress-strain law, this is included in the present analysis.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of arches with rectangular hollow section having constant area. The differential equations governing free vibrations of arches are derived in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Natural frequencies is computed numerically for parabolic arches with clamped-clamped, clamped-hinged and hinged-hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and reference are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the breadth ratio, the thickness ratio and the shape ratio
