  • This paper examines the flexure behavior of FRP-concrete composite structure that can replace conventional reinforced concrete structure types. In order to investigate the structural performance and behavioral characteristics in numerical analysis means, ABAQUS, a general purpose finite element analysis program, was utilized for nonlinear finite element analysis, and the various variables and their influences were analyzed and compared with experimental results to suggest values optimized to this composite structure. The concrete damage plasticity model and Euro code for concrete were used. In the implicit finite element analysis, the convergence was ambiguous when geometrical and material nonlinearity were large, so the explicit finite element analysis used in this study was deemed to be appropriate. From the comparison with the experiment about concrete damaged plasticity model, 20mm for the mesh size, $30^{\circ}$ for the dilation angle, $100Nmm/mm^2$ for the value of fracture energy, 0.667 for Kc value, and the consideration of damage parameter were suggested believed to be appropriate. The numerical model suggested in this study was able to imitate the ultimate load and cracking pattern very well; therefore, it is expected to be utilized in research of various new material composite structures.

  • In this study, a long-term unsteady simulation model has been developed using rigid water column theory which is more accurate than Extended-period model and more efficient comparing with water-hammer simulation model. The developed model is applied to 24-hours unsteady simulation considering daily water-demand and water-hammer analysis caused by closing a valve. For the case of 24-hours daily simulation, the pressure of each node decreases as the water demand increase, and when the water demand decrease, the pressure increases. During the simulation, the amplitudes of flow and pressure variation are different in each node and the pattern of flow variation as well as water demand is quite different than that of KYPIPE2. Such discrepancy necessitates the development of unsteady flow analysis model in water distribution network system. When the model is applied to water-hammer analysis, the pressure and flow variation occurred simultaneously through the entire network system by neglecting the compressibility of water. Although water-hammer model shows the lag of travel time due to fluid elasticity, in the aspect of pressure and flow fluctuation, the trend of overall variation and quantity of the result are similar to that of water-hammer model. This model is expected for the analysis of gradual long-term unsteady flow variations providing computational accuracy and efficiency as well as identifying pollutant dispersion, pressure control, leakage reduction corresponding to flow-demand pattern, and management of long-term pipeline net work systems related with flowrate and pressure variation in pipeline network systems

  • In this study, a computationally efficient parallel axial-flexural plastic hinge model is proposed for nonlinear dynamic progressive collapse analysis of welded steel moment frames. To this end, post-yield flexural behavior and the interaction of bending moment and axial force of the double-span beams in the column's missing event was first investigated by using material and geometric nonlinear parametric finite element analysis. A piece-wise linear parallel point hinge model that captures the moment-axial tension interaction was then proposed and applied to nonlinear dynamic progressive collapse analysis of welded steel moment frames with the use of the OpenSees Program. The accuracy as well as the efficiency of the proposed model was verified based on the inelastic dynamic finite element analysis results. The importance of including the catenary action effects for proper progressive collapse resistant analysis and design was also emphasized.

  • In ordinary back analysis it if hardly possible to obtain the mechanical properties of tunnel lining by using commonly measured displacements of tunnel lining, because only a few displacements could be measured at the site. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new method which can evaluate the state of stresses of tunnel by using measured data. In this study, in order to assess tunnel lining stability by estimating its stresses with a few measured displacements, a formulation of back analysis method was proposed. The accuracy of results were investigated through the parametric study for several types of measurement model of two dimensional elastic lining. This new back analysis method to assess tunnel lining stresses and strains with a few numbers of measured displacements showed high accuracy and good applicability when compared to the results of numerical experiments by FEM. The method has been tested on subway tunnel and its applicability has been confirmed by comparing field and analytical data. It is verified that the stress on the tunnel lining can be obtained by only more than 3 point of input displacements without any condition of external loads.

  • The surrounding ground was much transformed by the lateral movement on the soft ground, and consequently the stake basis was damaged. In this case the installed stake is ratted the passive stake, and is actively being researched. When the unevenly distributed load was applied on the stake, and thus the lateral ground pressure was operated, and then the lateral movement was occurred, and consequently the structure is influenced. However, prediction and mechanism for the relationship of piles and abutment deformation is not sufficient. In this paper, coupled three-dimensional finite element analysis, which can be described solid, plate and frame elements at the same time, is developed by the authors. The lateral movement of bridge abutment for the aspect ratio of steel piles on soft clay is clarified by using developed numerical analysis.

  • Great loss of life and property has been occurred by the severe flood globally. In Korea, a flood inundation map is used as one of the non-structural measures for reducing flood damage, and various inundation models have been studied for flood inundation analysis. This study applies LiDAR data and LISFLOOD model for flood inundation analysis and discusses the the modeling results from levee breaching scenarios for evaluating the applicability of the model to stream inundation modeling. In the results of LISFLOOD modeling, maximum inundation area was similar to the inundation map by HEC-RAS model just less than 4%. The inundation area by each levee breaching scenario showed the difference from 0.2% to 6.5%. Inundation processes were different each other according to the position of levee breach point, and maximum inundation area and depth were changed by the flow direction of stream and flood plain. This study shows that LISFLOOD model can be applied properly to stream inundation analysis using various inundation scenarios.

  • In this paper, generation mechanisms of ocean freak waves are briefly introduced in the context of wave-current interaction phenomena. The present model of the fluid motion is based on the Navier-Stokes equations incorporating velocity-pressure formulation because of need to model the nonlinear wave interaction with spatially non-uniform current field. In order to deal with the free surface motion, an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description is adopted. As an accurate and efficient numerical tool, the spectral element method is presented with general features and specific treatment for the wave-current interaction problem. As an intermediate stage of development, solution procedure and characteristics aspects of the present modeling and numerical method are addressed in detail, and preliminary numerical results prove its accuracy and convergence.

  • Geothermal energy is gaining wide attention as a highly efficient renewable energy and being increasingly used for heating/cooling systems of buildings. The standing column well (SCW) is especially efficient, cost-effective, and suitable for Korean geological and hydrological conditions. However, a numerical model that simulates the SCW has not yet been developed and applied in Korea. This paper describes the development of the SCW numerical model using a finite-volume analysis program. The model, through hydro-thermal coupled analyses, simulates heat transfer through advection, convection, and conduction. The accuracy of the model was verified through comparisons with field data measured at SCWs in the U.S. and Korea. Comparisons indicated that the SCW numerical model can closely predict the performance of a SCW. The numerical model was used to perform a comprehensive parametric study in the companion paper.
