  • Nowadays, offshore wind energy experiences a rapid development because of its wind condition and no noise impact problem. Different from Europe, offshore wind is just started in Asia. More work and research are needed in Korea. In this work, a three-bladed upwind variable speed pitch controlled 5MW wind turbine on a jacket support structure is used. During the simulation, several design load cases are investigated in two different fully coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic codes. Some critical loads on the foundation are compared and analyzed.

  • Recently, constructions of coastal structure including wind turbine structure have increased at southwest shore of Korea. There is a big difference of tide which rage from 3.0 m to 8.0 m at south and wet shore of Korea, respectively. In such ocean circumstance, large scour may occur due to multi-directional tidal current and transverse stress of the wind. therefore scour surrounding wind turbine structure can make system unsafe due to unexpected system vibration. In this study, hydraulic resistance capacity, i.e., critical velocity and critical shear stress, was evaluated by RCT. Uni-directional and bi-directional hydraulic resistance capacities of the samples which were consolidated by different preconsolidation pressures were correlated with soil resistivities of same samples. According to the correlation, it is possible to estimate hydraulic resistance capacity from electrical resistivity of soil. Through the updating the correlation for various soil types, it is expected that the hydraulic resistance capacity of whole construction site will be simply determined from the electrical resistivity.

  • To predict behaviors of offshore wind turbines which are highly laterally loaded structures and to design them rationally, evaluating the soil-foundation interaction is important. Nowadays, there are many soil modeling methods for structural analysis of general structures subjected to vertical loads, but using the methods without any consideration for design of a monopile foundation is eschewed because it might cause wrong structural design due to the deferent loading state. In this paper, we identify the differences of the member forces and displacements by design methods. The results show that fixed end method is barely suitable for monopile design in terms of checking the serviceability because it underestimate the lateral displacement. Fixed end method and stiffness matrix method underestimate the member forces, whereas virtual fixed end method overestimates them. The results of p-y curve method and coefficient of subgrade reaction method are similar to the results of 3D soil modeling method, and 2D soil modeling method overestimates the displacement and member forces as compared with other methods.

  • This paper presents a seismic reliability analysis method for an offshore wind turbine with a twisted tripod support structure under earthquake loading. A three dimensional dynamic finite element model is proposed to consider the nonlinearity of the ground-pile interactions and the geometrical characteristics of the twisted tripod support structure where out-of-plane displacement occurs even under in-plane lateral loadings. For the evaluation of seismic reliability, the failure probability was calculated for the maximum horizontal displacement of the pile head, which is calculated from time history analysis using artificial earthquakes for the design return periods. The application of the subset simulation method using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo(MCMC) sampling is proposed for efficient reliability analysis considering the limit state equation evaluation by the nonlinear time history analysis. The proposed method can be applied to the reliability evaluation and design criteria development of the offshore wind turbine with twisted tripod support structure in which two dimensional models and static analysis can not produce accurate results.

  • As a study for offshore wind farm, we investigated the fish fauna of the Wi-do, Younggwang-gun, Chollabuk-do, Korea. From the four times collection of fish species from October 2013 to June 2014, we collected 46 species of 26 families including 9 orders. Among them, the fish of family Gobiidae includes the most number of six species (13.6%). The dominant species was the Argyrosomus argentatus with 53.10%. Total of 17 fish species, including the Cynoglossus joyneri were collected from all of four collecting sites. On the other hand, 13 species including Inimicus japonicus were collected from only one site. Being the wind farm under construction, fish will temporary decrease in this area. But in the long term, we think that Oplegnathus fasciatus, Sebastes shlegelli and others will increase with good inhabited environment provided by the wind farm structures.

  • A damage estimation method is presented for jacket-type support structure of offshore wind turbine using a change of modal properties due to damage and committee of neural networks for effective structural health monitoring. For more practical monitoring, it is necessary to monitor the critical and prospective damaged members with a limited number of measurement locations. That is, many data channels and sensors are needed to identify all the members appropriately because the jacket-type support structure has many members. This is inappropriate considering economical and practical health monitoring. Therefore, intensive damage estimation for the critical members using a limited number of the measurement locations is carried out in this study. An analytical model for a jacket-type support structure which can be applied for a 5 MW offshore wind turbine is established, and a training pattern is generated using the numerical simulations. Twenty damage cases are estimated using the proposed method. The identified damage locations and severities agree reasonably well with the exact values and the accuracy of the estimation can be improved by applying the committee of neural networks. A verification experiment is carried out, and the damage arising in 3 damage cases is reasonably identified.

  • In order to predict the seabed topography change due to the construction of offshore wind power structures in the west-southern sea of Korea, field observations for tides, tidal currents, suspended sediment concentrations and seabed sediments were carried out at the same time. These data could be used for numerical simulation. In numerical experiments, the empirical constants for the suspended sediment flux were determined by the trial and error method. When a concentration distribution factor was 0.1 and a proportional constant was 0.05 in the suspended sediment equilibrium concentration formulae, the calculated suspended sediment concentrations were reasonably similar with the observed ones. Also, it was appropriate for the open boundary conditions of the suspended sediment when the south-east boundary corner was 11.0 times, the south-west was 0.5 times, the westnorth 1.0 times, the north-west was 1.0 times and the north-east was 1.0 times, respectively, using the time series of the observed suspended sediment concentrations. In this case, the depth change was smooth and not intermittent around the open boundaries. From these calibrations, the annual water depth change before and after construction of the offshore wind power structures was shown under 1 cm. The reason was that the used numerical model for the large scale grid could not reproduce a local scour phenomenon and they showed almost no significant velocity change over ± 2 cm/s because the jacket structures with small size diameter, about 1 m, were a water-permeable. Therefore, it was natural that there was a slight change on seabed topography in the study area.

  • A damage estimation method for monopile support structure of offshore wind turbine using modal properties and committee of neural networks is presented for effective structural health monitoring. An analytical model for a monopile support structure is established, and the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and mode shape slopes for the support structure are calculated considering soil condition and added mass. The input to the neural networks consists of the modal properties and the output is composed of the stiffness indices of the support structure. Multiple neural networks are constructed and each individual network is trained independently with different initial synaptic weights. Then, the estimated stiffness indices from different neural networks are averaged. Ten damage cases are estimated using the proposed method, and the identified damage locations and severities agree reasonably well with the exact values. The accuracy of the estimation can be improved by applying the committee of neural networks which is a statistical approach averaging the damage indices in the functional space.

  • Suction piles have been widely used as foundations and anchor systems in offshore industry, and recently, it have been tried to be used as foundations for offshore wind turbines. Many researches have shown that stiffness of a foundation could effect dynamic responses of a offshore wind turbine so that appropriate modeling application of wind turbine foundations is recommended. In this paper, we calculate a stiffness matrix of a suction foundation through 3D FEM analysis and compare the results with the ones calculated by conventional formula for estimating stiffness of shallow foundations. And then we carry out integrated load analysis for the evaluation of dynamic responses and natural frequencies of the structure using the calculated stiffness matrix. The results shows that the effect of load in the mudline is not large, but in the case of assuming the foundation as a fixed support, the natural frequency is over-estimated up to 10%. Therefore, considering stiffness of foundations is recommended when you evaluate the natural frequencies of wind turbine structures.
