  • The physical and chemical properties of dry acorn starch(DS), defatted acorn starch (DFS) and reincorporated acorn starch(RIS) were investigated. Swelling power and solubility of all starch sample, were exhibited two stage behavior. It had a little change on the pasting temperature of DS and DFS but the peak viscosity and breakdown value of DFS was somewhat higher than those of DS and RIS. Flow behavior of gelatinized starch pastes showed a pseudoplastic behavior and flow behavior index was lower than unit The consistency coefficient showed concentration and temperature dependency. The activation energies of DS, DFS and RIS were from $1.70Kca1/g\;{\cdot}\;mol$ to $3.75Kca1/g\;{\cdot}\;mol$.

  • The lateral behavior characteristics of concrete group pile under the lateral load were examined by the laboratory model tests in this study. Piles were socketed 1D(D : pile diameter) in the concrete block, and model tests were executed on $2{\times}3$ group piles, of which the length were 11D, 15D and 20D. All results of loading tests under each condition was presented by the lateral load-displacement curves, and the displacements in the ground under the lateral loads were measured. As a results of model tests, as the ratio of pile length/diameter(L/D) was decreased, the yielding load and the lateral displacement at that load were increased. The yielding load was evaluated as the load at lateral displacement of 15 mm. The yielding loads at the pile length of 11D, 15D and 20D were 11.7, 6.2kN and 3.4kN. The lateral displacements of pile in the ground under each condition were measured linearly and the failure occurred at the location where the piles were socketed in concrete block.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the power MOSFET devices for high voltage and high current operation. 4H-SiC was used instead of Si to improve the static characteristics of the device. Since 4H-SiC has a high critical electric field due to wide band gap, 4H-SiC is more advantageous than Si in high voltage and high current operation. In the conventional VDMOSFET structure using 4H-SiC, the breakdown voltage is limited due to the electric field crowding at the edge of the p-base region. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a Curvature VDMOSFET structure that improves the breakdown voltage and the static characteristics by reducing the electric field crowding by giving curvature to the edge of the p-base region. The static characteristics of conventional VDMOSFET and curvature VDMOSFET are compared and analyzed through TCAD simulation. The Curvature VDMOSFET has a breakdown voltage of 68.6% higher than that of the conventional structure without increasing on-resistance.

  • Well-designed steel moment connections will undergo local buckling before they exhaust their available rotation capacity, and inelastic post-buckling deformation plays a major role in defining the connection rotation capacity. An approximate analytical method to model strength degradation and failure of beam plastic hinges due to local buckling and estimation of the seismic rotation capacity of fully restrained beam-column connections in special steel moment-resisting frames under both monotonic and cyclic loading conditions is proposed in this study. This method is based on the plastic mechanism and a yield line plastic hinge (YLPH) model whose geometry is determined using the shapes of the buckled plastic hinges observed in experiments. The proposed YLPH model was developed for the improved WUF-W and RBS connections and validated in comparison with experimental data. The effects of the beam section geometric parameters on the rotation capacity were discussed in the companion paper (parametric studies).

  • Elastic-plastic methods have been used for the better prediction of the actual behavior of continuous-composite plate girder bridges in the overload and maximum load analysis. The structural evaluation using ALFD(Alternate Load Factor Design) uses the elastic-plastic analysis. The plastic rotations that remain after the load is removed can be occurred by the yielding locations of the maximum moment section. This situation can occur due to the residual stresses even if the moment is below the theoretical yield moment. The local yielding causes positive automoments that assure elastic behavior under subsequent overloads. In this study, the automoments at the piers occurred due to the unit plastic rotations and other locations were calculated by the conjugate-beam method and three-moment equation, using the nine design span with progressively smaller pier sections. The automoments were determined by the developed computer programs in this study in which the moments and plastic rotations from the continuity and moment-inelastic rotation relationships must be equal. And also the ratings of 3-span continuous composite plate girder bridges with non-compact section were carried out according to the Korean Highway Bridge Specification.

  • The rheological properties of fresh concrete significantly influence its manufacturing and performance. However, the diversification of newly developed mixtures and manufacturing techniques has made it challenging to accurately predict these properties using traditional empirical methods. This study introduces a multiscale rheological property prediction model designed to quantitatively anticipate the rheological characteristics from nano-scale interparticle interactions, such as those among cement particles, to micro-scale behaviors, such as those involving fine aggregates. The Yield Stress Model (YODEL), the Chateau-Ovarlez-Trung equation, and the Krieger-Dougherty equation were utilized to predict the yield stress for cement paste and mortar, as well as the plastic viscosity. Initially, predictions were made for the paste scale, using the water-cement ratio (W/C) of the cement paste. These predictions then served as a basis for further forecasting of the rheological properties at the mortar scale, incorporating the same W/C and adding the cement-sand volume ratio (C/S). Lastly, the practicality of the predictive model was assessed by comparing the forecasted outcomes to experimental results obtained from rotational rheometer.

  • Flexural strength of concrete ground slab reinforced with steel fiber is evaluated using the equivalent flexural strength ratio of steel fiber reinforced concrete based on the yield line theory. Recently, the European standard specifies that the tensile performance of the steel fiber reinforced concrete be evaluated directly from the residual flexural strength after the cracking of concrete. Thus, in the study, an experiment was carried out to evaluate the conventional equivalent flexural strength ratio and the residual flexural strength of the steel fiber reinforced concrete. Then the design flexural strength was investigated according to the location of a point load, based on the ratio of the radius of contact area of the load to the radius of relative stiffness. Design flexural capacity obtained from ACI 360R-10 was smaller than that from TR 34 (2003 & 2013). In addition, TR 34 (2013), which evaluates the design flexural capacity based on the residual flexural strength, showed slightly smaller value than TR 34 (2003).

  • A study on the undrained behavior of isotropically consolidated clay-sand mixtures was carried out using the automated triaxial testing apparatus. Overconsolidated ratio, effective mean pressure and clay content( up to 20% bentonite) were the factors varied in the experimental investigation. Undrained behavior(strength and pore water pressure generation during shear in triaxial loading) depends upon overconsolidation ratio, confining pressure and clay content. Significant changes in undrained compression characteristics occurred at around 20% of clay contents in the sand. The test results were analyzed and their behaviors were interpreted within the framework of plasticity constitutive model for clay-sand mixtures. Possible physical bases for the proposed forms are discussed. Validation of the applied model using the laboratory results is also given.

  • The KCI-12 and ACI 318-14 design codes limit the maximum yield strength of shear reinforcement to prevent concrete compressive crushing before the yielding of shear reinforcement. The maximum yield strength of shear reinforcement is limited to 420 MPa in the ACI 318-14 design code, while limited to 500 MPa in the KCI-12 design code. A total of eight post-tensioning prestressed concrete beams with high strength shear reinforcement were tested to observe the shear behavior of PSC beams and the applicability of the high strength reinforcement was thus assessed. In the all PSC beam specimens that used stirrups greater than maximum yield strength of shear reinforcement required by the ACI 318-14 design code, the shear reinforcement reached their yield strains. The observed shear strength of tested eight PSC beams was greater than the calculated ones by the KCI-12 design codes. In addition, the diagonal crack width of all specimens at the service load was smaller than the crack width required by the ACI 224 committee. The experimental and analytical results indicate that the limitation on the yield strength of shear reinforcement in the ACI 318-14 design code is somewhat under-estimated and needs to be increased for high strength concrete. Also the application of high strength materials to PSC is available with respect to strength and serviceability.

  • The effects of seven commercial gums (xanthan gum, guar gum, pectin, gum arabic, gellan, locust bean gum, and sodium alginate) at different concentrations (0, 0.3, and 0.6%) on flow properties of sweet potato starch (SPS) pastes were investigated. Flow behavior characteristics were adequately described by power law flow model, and yield stress was also measured by vane method. SPS-gum mixtures (5% w/w) at $25^{\circ}C$ were found to have high shear-thinning flow behavior with yield stress, and their consistency index (K) and apparent viscosity ($\eta_{a,100}$) increased with elevated gum concentration, except for pectin and sodium alginate. Vane yield stress ($\sigma_o$) value of SPS-pectin mixture was lower when compared to other mixtures while that of SPS-gellan mixture was much higher. Most of the gums, except for pectin, gum arabic, and sodium alginate, showed a synergistic effect on the elastic properties of SPS-gum mixtures. In general, the flow properties of SPS-gum mixtures appeared to be strongly influenced by the addition of gum, and dependent on the type and concentration of gum.
