  • ICAO adopted the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) at the 39th General Assembly in 2016, and 115 countries, including South Korea, expressed their intention to participate in CORSIA as of January 1, 2023. Since carbon generated in the aviation industry is mainly caused by greenhouse gases emitted from aircraft engines, fuel consumption must be reduced to reduce carbon emissions. Prior research, such as simulation, is essential to predict the effectiveness of each plan and to make decisions about its implementation. High-quality data is needed to derive accurate results, but it has been difficult to secure actual fuel consumption data, as they are considered to be classified airline data. Therefore, in this paper, after establishing a model that estimates fuel consumption based on actual fuel consumption data, the model is to be advanced to improve its accuracy.

  • The wake turbulence at the wingtip of preceding aircraft may affect the normal operation of following aircraft. Aircraft are classified into four categories according to their maximum take-off weight, and horizontal separation is applied with this category matrix. The FAA and EUROCONTROL revealed that the magnitude and effect of preceding aircraft wake turbulence were smaller than the current distance separation minima suggest. This new information presents the opportunity for revising wake turbulence minima into seven categories (RECAT). This paper confirms the feasibility of implementing RECAT at major airports in South Korea using the draft of ICAO Doc. 10122. The paper also calculates the ultimate runway capacity of Incheon International Airport in South Korea using the Harris Model and comparatively analyzes the amount of runway capacity. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the implementation of RECAT could increase the ultimate runway capacity of Incheon International Airport. This paper's calculation methods and results can be used as primary data for implementing RECAT in other airports.

  • The reliability of measuring instruments is essential in measuring cosmic radiation. To demonstrate this importance, this study measured and compared the amount of cosmic radiation using Liulin and TEPC, operated in South Korea, on a flight between Incheon, South Korea and LA, the US. In addition, since prior analysis based on a prediction program is necessary in advance to check the dose of cosmic radiation, this study utilized KREAM developed in Korea and the CARI-6M developed by the FAA to acquire the predicted value. As a result of the verification, the reliability of the two devices falls within the acceptable level of 20%, proving the reliability. Moreover, the differences between the values acquired by each prediction program were only subtle. Nevertheless, the analysis demonstrated that the prediction value obtained by the programs and the measured value had significant differences. Therefore, additional correction of the discrepancies or continuous research for such is required to match the predicted values are similar to the actual measured values.

  • According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 61% of the accidents occurred during the approach and landing phase of the flight, with 16% of the accidents caused by unstable access of the commercial aircraft. It was identified that the pilot's unstable approach and poor manipulation of correction led to accidents by continuing the excessive approach without go-around manuever. The causes of unstable access may vary, including airport approach procedures, pilot error, misplanning, workload, ATC (Air Traffic Contol) congestion, etc. In this study, we use the flight data analysis system to select domestic case airports and aircraft type where unstable approach events occur repeatedly. Through flight data analysis, including main events, airport approach procedures, pilot operations, as well as various environmental factors such as weather and geographical conditions at the airport. It aims to identify and eliminate the tendency of unstable approach events and the causes and risks of them to derive implications for mitigating unstable approach events and for developing navigation safety measures.

  • The development of autopilot system and flight management system (FMS) equipment in today's aircraft navigation can be attributed to the reduction of pilots' workload and the navigation safety. The effect of autopilot and FMS equipment is greater, especially in heavy airport traffic or complicated of the departure. However, some airport specific departure procedures result in an uncommanded turn event due to an error in the FMS, causing aircraft to deviate from the center line of the route. With most departure procedures requiring area navigation (RNAV) operation, pilot situation awareness and corrective action are the only ways to minimize aircraft deviation to maintain the safety of area navigation. Through analysis of the occurrence status of the uncommended turn event by aircraft type, airport and flight phase, and comparative analysis of the survey results of foreign airlines and the airlines self-reduction plan with the aircraft manufacturer's corrective action, it is intended to give implications for the need for more fundamental measures to prevent recurrence of such events.

  • As the service industry develops, service quality, customer satisfaction, and human resource management are considered priorities in modern management to maintain a company's growth. Therefore, understanding the strategic importance of service marketing is an essential task for modern companies. This study examined the relationship between the internal service quality of employees in the organization and customer orientation through organizational effectiveness. In the case of an airline, a service can be defined as an interaction between an external customer and an internal customer service provider. This interaction significantly affects the behavior and attitude of the employees. Based on the results, empowerment has a significant influence on the internal service quality, but it has no significant effect on customer orientation. As the relationship between department and employees improved, the more confident staff showed an improved ability to perform their work. Therefore, it is important that the organizational structure and the reporting system are as concise and clear as possible to allow employees to accurately recognize the authorities and responsibilities assigned to them and have autonomy and discretion in the framework.

  • According to the analysis of Kolb's learning style, Korean university student pilots interpret and attach meaning to themselves. Moreover, as the school year progresses, they enter the flight-training course with a 100 % diverger style, which is a variety of thoughts and imaginative learning styles. As the school year progresses, some changes occur with accommodator (11.1%) and assimilator (15.9%) styles. On the other hand, most students remain as the diverger style (71.4%). In the case of U.S. student pilots, most in first-year are assimilator (35.5%) and converger (24.3%) styles, and the proportion of the converger style increases as the senior year is approached. In the first grade, most Chinese student pilots are assimilators (41.5%) and convergers (28.4%), but in the higher grade, the proportion of assimilators and convergers decrease, and the proportion of diverger styles increases dramatically. In the fourth grade, the accommodator was similar to the first grade, but the converger style continued to decrease (41.5% in the first grade and 27.0% in the fourth grade).

  • The pilot's role is absolutely critical to the safety of an airline. It can be predicted that there is a difference in the acquisition of pilot competency required in actual flight at the initial flight training stage. In this study, the progress and effects of education and training for each background are analyzed, and differentiated competency-based training is to be studied. By sampling a sample of civil airline pilots, we are trying to determine whether there is a difference in the results of the regular proficiency check among the eight competencies defined by ICAO according to military and civil backgrounds. Accordingly, an independent t-test was conducted to test the average difference between the two groups, from the military and civilian origin, to confirm the average difference in the piloting competency between the groups. Based on these results, it will be helpful to design future training courses.

  • Take-off weight is a key factor for improving accuracy when estimating an aircraft's carbon emissions and fuel consumption. However, the takeoff weight contains sensitive payload information that can infer the airline's management strategy, making it impossible to leak it outside. Although several models for estimating takeoff weight have been presented in previous studies, the researcher points out that there are limitations of the study caused by variables at the pilot's discretion. In this paper, several variables related to takeoff weight are identified to suggest a way to control these limits. Among them, variables that can improve the accuracy of takeoff weight are selected and an estimation equation is presented by applying them to ADS-B information. The proposed estimation does not estimate the average takeoff weight but has the advantage of being able to estimate all ranges of the takeoff weight.
