Research and Development & Commercial Deployment Status for Coal Gasification Technology - Mainly from GTC 2010 (2010 가스화 기술 컨퍼런스를 중심으로 살펴본 석탄 가스화 기술의 개발 동향 및 상업화 전개 현황)

  • Coal Gasification Technology is one of the best alternatives among clean fossil fuel utilization. Major technology holding companies are devoting their efforts to develop more advanced technology to dominate the market in advance because of its importance on the applications such as IGCC, CTL, coal to SNG, various chemicals and so on. Japan and China, as well as America and European countries, have developed couple of thousands ton/day-class coal gasification technology. However, our gasification technology remains in the development stage with couple of ton/day-class pilot plant. So, we should be interested in developing this technology considering that we are heavily dependent of coal energy. In this paper, we summarized the trend and status of coal gasification technology development and commercial deployment of major technology holding companies mainly from the presentation materials of 'Gasification Technology Conference 2010', which is the biggest place of information exchange for recent coal gasification technology.

  • As conventional light oil resources deplete, it is becoming necessary to develop unconventional resources. To meet the demand for petrochemical industry, heavier sources such as heavy oil and bitumen are being utilized. Bitumens, a complex hydrocarbon made up of a long chain of molecules, are found in oil sand. It is estimated that 830 billion barrels of oil are located in the oil sand in Alberta, Canada. This paper will review briefly (1) the basic concept of oil sand, bitumen, and heavy oil, (2) methods how to extract oil from oil sand, (3) methods how to upgrade to synthetic crude oil, and (4) economic evaluation of technology.

  • 고온건식탈황기술은 고온고압에서 석탄가스에 함유된 황화합물을 제거하는 기술로 석탄가스화에 의해 생성된 고온의 석탄가스의 열손실을 최소화하여 열효율이 높은 기술이다. 본 연구에서는 석탄으로부터 합성원유를 생산하는 0.3 배럴/일 규모 석탄액화(CTL)공정의 연계운전을 통하여 건식탈황공정의 성능을 평가하였다. 0.3 배럴/일 규모 석탄액화공정은 석탄가스화기, 건식탈황공정, 액화공정으로 구성되어 있으며 30 atm의 고압에서 운전된다. 건식탈황공정은 석탄가스화기와 액화공정 사이에 위치하여 석탄가스화로부터 생성된 석탄가스에 함유된 황화합물을 아연계 건식탈황제에 의해 제거한 후 액화반응기로 공급하여 황화합물에 의한 촉매의 피독을 막아주는 역할을 수행한다. 본 연구에서는 기존에 개발된 두 개의 기포유동층 반응기로 구성된 탈황장치를 30 atm에서 운전이 가능하도록 수정/보완하여 실제 운전압력인 30 atm의 고압에서 연속운전을 수행하였다. 실험 결과 탈황효율은 99% 이상이며 탈황반응기 출구 황화합물의 농도는 1 ppmv 이하로 유지하였다.

  • 허베이스피리트호 원유유출 사고는 2007년 12월7일 아침 7시6분경 서해안 만리포 북서쪽 10km 해상에서 크레인을 적재한 1만1800t급 바지선이 정박 중인 홍콩 선적 유조선 허베이 스피리트호(14만6000t급)와 부딪치면서 발생했다. 이와 같은 기름 유출 사고의 경우, 유출 범위를 정확하게 이해하는 것이 중요하다. 여기서는 위 사고 기간에 얻어진 인공위성 자료를 이용하여 기름 유출을 탐지하기 위한 연구결과를 소개한다. 광학과 마이크로파데이터에 대해 유출 범위의 계산 및 해석 알고리듬에 대한 현재까지의 결과를 소개한다. 광학데이터로는 아리랑 2호(다목적실용위성 2호, KOMPSAT II)) MSC(Multi Spectral Camera)자료가 사용되었으며, 합성개구레이더로는 ENVISAT ASAR, TerraSAR-X 및 ALOS PALSAR의 자료가 사용되었다.

Isolation and Characteristics of Biosurfactant Producing Bacterium, Bacillus sp. TBM 911-5 (Biosurfactant 생산균주 Bacillus sp. TBM 911-5의 분리 및 특성)

  • The objective of this study was investigate the characteristic of biosurfactant produced from the isolated strain. The strain was isolated from soil samples and identified as Bacillus sp. TBM 911-5 by physiological characteristics and the partial nucleotide sequence analysis of 16S rDNA. We measured the surface tension every 6 hours for 80 hours. The surface tension of the culture filtrate of Bacillus sp. TBM 911-5 was decreased to 29 mN/m. Biosurfactant concentration was determined by diluting the culture filtrate until the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The biosurfactant emulsified hydrocarbons, vegetable oil and crude oil. Using soybean oil as substrate, the maximum emulsification activity and stability was obtained from the biosurfactant. The biosurfactant produced from Bacillus sp. TBM 911-5 had strong properties as an emulsifying agent and an emulsion-stabilizing agent.

  • Sensitive and specific monoclonal antibody (MAb) was produced from hybridoma (1H11-5) obtained by fusion of myeloma cell (V653) and spleen cell isolated from mouse immunized sulfamthazine (SMZ)-HG-KLH. Direct competitive ELISA was developed for rapid detection of SMZ in milk samples using MAb against SMZ with optimized conditions between MAb and SMZ-HG-HRP conjugate, and applicable conditions for analysis of milk samples were established. Detection range of immunoassay was 0.1 to 100 ppb. Recoveries from spiked raw milk and processed milk samples averaged 82.1-120.7 and 82.1-97.1%, respectively.

Characterization of Oil-Degradation Biosurfactant Produced by Bacillus sp. TBM40-3 (Bacillus sp. TBM40-3에 의해 생성된 Biosurfactant의 유류분해 특성)

  • In this paper we studied about Bacillus sp. TBM40-3 producing biosurfactants. The strains were isolated from Taeback Mountain soil and identified as Bacillus sp. by l6S rDNA nucleotides sequence analysis. The TBM40-3 was gram-positive and rod-shaped as observed by field emission scanning microscopy. After the cultivation TBM40-3 in LB broth for 90 h and the surface tension of supernatant was decreased to 29 mN/m. Emulsification activity and stability of crude biosurfactant was measured by using water-immiscible hydrocarbons and oil as substrate. Maximum emulsification activity and stability was obtained from soybean oil. Also, we confirmed that the TBM40-3 producing biosurfactant had an effect on crude oil while showing a superior effect as compared to chemically synthesized surfactants (SDS, Span85, Tween40, Triton X-100). As a result, the Bacillus sp. TBM40-3 producing biosurfactant had potent properties as an emulsifying agent and an emulsion stabilizing agent.

Research Trend about the Development of White Biotech-Based Aromatic Compounds (화이트바이오텍기반 방향족화합물 개발에 관한 연구동향)

  • Due to the depleting petroleum reserve, recurring energy crisis, and global warming, it is necessary to study the development of white biotech-based aromatic chemical feedstock from renewable biomass for replacing petroleum-based one. In particular, the production of aromatic intermediates and derivatives in biosynthetic pathway of aromatic amino acids from glucose might be replaced by the production of petrochemical-based aromatic chemical feedstock including benzene-derived aromatic compounds. In this review, I briefly described the production technology for hydroquinone, catechol, adipic acid, shikimic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol, vanillin, p-hydroxycinnamic acid, p-hydroxystyrene, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, indigo, and indole 3-acetic acid using metabolic engineering, bioconversion, and chemical process. The problems and possible solutions regarding development of production technology for competitive white biotech-based aromatic compounds were also discussed.

The Characteristics of Two Phase Flow by Non-Newtonian Fluid for Vertical Up-ward in a Tube (수직 상향유동 배관에서 비뉴톤유체에 의한 2상류의 유동특성)

  • Flow pattern of air-water two phase flow depends on the conditions of pressure drop, void fraction, and channel geometry. Drag reduction in the two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change systems such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to present cavitation which occurs in pump impellers. But the research on drag reduction in two phase flow is not intensively investigated. Therefore, experimental investigations have been carried out to analyze the drag reduction produced and void fraction by Co-polymer(A611p) addition in the two phase flow system. We find that the maximum point position of local void friction moves from the wall of the pipe to the center of the pipe when polymer concentration increases. Also we find that the polymer solution changes the characteristics of the two phase flow. And then we predict that it is closely related with the drag reduction.
