The aim of this study was to identify and quantify the major or detectable monomers released from any of five commercially-available, light-cured pit and fissure sealants with three different light sources : conventional halogen light curing unit, plasma arc light curing unit and LED curing unit. After curing, specimens were immediately immersed in distilled water for different time intervals. The time related release of monomers were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). Identification and quantitative analysis of monomers were performed by the comparison of the elution time and the absorption peak height of the eluates with those of the authentic sample. The result of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. Standard solution peaks with retention times of 2.3, 3.2, 5.6, 6.5, 10.4 minutes were identified as BPA, TEGDMA, UDMA, Bis-GMA, Bis-DMA, respectively. 2. None of the chromatograms of the tested sealants displayed peaks with the same retention time as that of the standard solution, except for TEGDMA. 3. The highest release rate of TEGDMA was observed during the 12hr period for all samples and declined thereafter. 4. The elution of TEGDMA from curing with Halogen curing unit for 20 second and LED for 10 second was less than that resulting from curing with Plasma arc for 3 second. 5. TEGDMA was detected at much lower levels in eluates from the Pit & Fissure $Sealant^{TM}$ than other sealants. The elution of TEGDMA from the $Helioseal^{(R)}$ F cured with Halogen light curing unit, the $Concise^{TM}$ cured with Plasma arc curing unit and the $Teethmate^{(R)}$ F-1 cured with LED curing unit were higher than other sealants.

Effect of Soft-start curing on the contraction stress of composite resin restoration polymerized with LED and plasma curing unit The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of soft-start light curing on contraction stress and hardness of composite resin. Composite resin (Filtek $Z-250^{TM}$, 3M ESPE, USA) was cured using the one-step continuous curing method with three difference light sources ; conventional halogen light ($XL3000^{TM}$, 3M ESPE, USA) cure for 40 seconds at $400 mw/cm^2$, LED light (Elipar Freelight $2^{TM}$, 3M-ESPE, USA) cure for 20 seconds at $800\;mW/cm^2$ a and plasma arc light ($Flipo^{TM}$, LOKKI, France) cure for 12 seconds at $1300 mW/cm^2$. For the soft-start curing method ; LED light (Elipar Freelight $2^{TM}$, 3M-ESPE, USA) cure exponential increase with 5 seconds followed by 17 seconds at $800\;mW/cm^2$ and plasma arc light ($Flipo^{TM}$, LOKKI, France) cure 2 seconds light exposure at $650\;mW/cm^2$ followed by 11 seconds at $1300\;mW/cm^2$. The strain guage method was used for determination of polymerization contraction. Measurements were recorded at each 2 second for the total of 800 seconds including the periods of light application. Obtained data were analyzed statically using Repeated measures ANOVA, One way ANOVA, and Tukey test. The results of present study can be summarized as follows: 1. Composite resin restoration showed transient expansion just after irradiation of curing light. Contraction stress was increased rapidly at the early phase of polymerization and reduced slowly as time elapsed (P<0.05). 2. Contraction stress was not revealed significant difference between Halogen curing light groups and LED and Plasma Light curing with soft-start group (P>0.05). 3. LED and Plasma Light curing with soft-start showed lower contraction stress than the one-step continuous light curing (P<0.05).

Recently, newly developed single high-intensity LED curing lights for composite resins are claimed to have a higher intensity than previous LED curing lights and to results in optimal properties and short curing time. The purpose of this study was to determine the curing effectiveness of the curing units and to evaluate the relationship between the degree of polymerization and distance from curing light tip end to resin surface. One composite resin was tested(Filtek Z250). Thin film specimens were cured with a LED curing unit(Elipar Freelight 2, 10s), Plasma Arc curing unit(Flipo, 6s), Halogen curing light(XL3000, 20s) at four curing light tip to the resin surface(0mm, 2mm, 4mm, 6mm). Degree of conversion of composite resins were determined by a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer(FTIR). From the present study, the following results were obtained. 1. In all curing units, relative light intensity was significantly decreased according to the increase of distance of light tip to the resin surface(p<0.05). LED curing units showed a higher percentile decrease in intensity than other curing units. 2. In all curing units, degree of conversion was decreased as increase of the distance but no statistically significant difference(p>0.05) except between 4mm and 6mm(p<0.05). 3. When comparing degree of conversion of light curing units at each distance(0mm, 2mm, 4mm, 6mm), LED curing light had a higher degree of conversion than plasma arc and halogen curing lights at 0, 2, 4mm(p<0.05). At 6mm, there was a no significant difference among the curing units(p>0.05).

Adequate polymerization is a crucial factor in obtaining optimal physical properties and clinical performance of resin composite restorative materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of shade and depth on dental composite resin polymerized with plasma arc curing unit employing FTIR and microhardness. From this experiment, the following results were obtained : 1. The light transmission and microhardness by mode 6 in plasma arc curing were similar to by 20 secs in halogen light curing. 2. The experimental groups of A1, A2, A3, A3.5 were not signifcant difference to light transmission and microhardness on surface and 2mm depth, but were significant difference on 3mm and 4mm depth. Especially light transmission and microhardness were small in darker shade and deeper thickness. 3. Compared with depth cure, uncured monomer amount increased at more than 2mm depth. 4. The light transmission by FTIR and polymerization by microhardness were significant corelation.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of composite resin($Z250^{(R)}$) and compomer(Dyract AP) cured with various curing lights(Elipar $TriLight^{(R)}$, $Flipo^{(R)}$, and Elipar FreeLight $2^{(R)}$). Box-shaped class V cavities were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of extracted human third molars. The sectioned specimens were evaluated for dye penetration and following results were obtained. 1. Regarding microleakage in the enamel margin with different curing light sources, there was no significant difference in Dyract AP whereas $Z250^{(R)}$ with $Flipo^{(R)}$ showed higher microleakage score than those of FreeLight $2^{(R)}$ or $TriLight^{(R)}$(p<0.05). 2. Regarding microleakage in the dentin margin with curing light sources, there were no significant differences in both Dyract AP and $Z250^{(R)}$(p>0.05). 3. Regarding microleakage in the enamel margin with filling materials. there were no significant differences in both filling materials with $Flipo^{(R)}$ whereas $Z250^{(R)}$ showed less microleakage than Dyract AP with FreeLight $2^{(R)}$ or $TriLight^{(R)}$ (p<0.05). 4. Regarding microleakage in the dentin margin with filling materials, there wer no significant differences in both filling materials with $TriLight^{(R)}$ whereas $Z250^{(R)}$ showed less microleakage than Dyract AP with FreeLight $2^{(R)}$ or $Flipo^{(R)}$ (p<0.05). 5. Enamel margin showed less microleakage than dentin margin when filled with Dyract AP and cured with $Flipo^{(R)}$ or FreeLight $2^{(R)}$ (p<0.05), but there were no statistically significant differences between the enamel and the dentin in the rest groups. This study suggested that $Z250^{(R)}$ showed lower microleakage score than Dyract AP. and that $Flipo^{(R)}$ showed higher microleakage score than FreeLight $2^{(R)}$ and $TriLight^{(R)}$ in the enamel margin filled with $Z250^{(R)}$.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the polymerization shrinkage stress among conventional methacrylate-based composite resins and a silorane-based composite resin. Materials and Methods: The strain gauge method was used for the determination of polymerization shrinkage strain. Specimens were divided by 3 groups according to various composite materials. Filtek Z-250 (3M ESPE) and Filtek P-60 (3M ESPE) were used as a conventional methacrylate-based composites and Filtek P-90 (3M ESPE) was used as a silorane-based composites. Measurements were recorded at each 1 second for the total of 800 seconds including the periods of light application. The results of polymerization shrinkage stress were statistically analyzed using One way ANOVA and Tukey test (p = 0.05). Results: The polymerization shrinkage stress of a silorane-based composite resin was lower than those of conventional methacrylate-based composite resins (p < 0.05). The shrinkage stress between methacrylate-based composite resin groups did not show significant difference (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Within the limitation of this study, silorane-based composites showed lower polymerization shrinkage stress than methacrylate-based composites. We need to investigate more into polymerization shrinkage stress with regard to elastic modulus of silorane-based composites for the precise result.

The purpose of this study was to observe in vitro pulp chamber temperature rise during composite resin polymerization with various light-curing sources. The kinds of light-curing sources were plasma arc light(P), low heat plasma arc light, traditional low intensity halogen light, low intensity LED(L-LED), and high intensity LED(H-LED). Temperature at the tip of light guide was measured by a digital thermometer using K-type thermocouple. Occlusal cavities$(2{\times}2{\times}1.5mm)$ were so prepared in extracted human premolars as to the remaining dentin thickness was 1mm. Dentin adhesive was applied to all cavities. Experimental groups consisted of no base group, ionomer glass base group, and calcium hydroxide base group. Temperature before and after resin filling was measured. Temperature at the light guide tip was the highest with P and the lowest L-LED. Temperature before resin filling was the highest with H-LED and the lowest with L-LED. Temperature after resin filling was the highest with H-LED and the lowest with L-P and with L-LED. The lining of base partially reduced the temperature rise.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to measure the power density of light curing units transmitted through resin inlays fabricated with direct composite (Filtek Z350, Filtek Supreme XT) and indirect composite (Sinfony). Materials and Methods: A3 shade of Z350, A3B and A3E shades of Supreme XT, and A3, E3, and T1 shades of Sinfony were used to fabricate the resin inlays in 1.5 mm thickness. The power density of a halogen light curing unit (Optilux 360) and an LED light curing unit (Elipar S10) through the fabricated resin inlays was measured with a hand held dental radiometer (Cure Rite). To investigate the effect of each composite layer consisting the resin inlays on light transmission, resin specimens of each shade were fabricated in 0.5 mm thickness and power density was measured through the resin specimens. Results: The power density through the resin inlays was lowest with the Z350 A3, followed by Supreme XT A3B and A3E. The power density was highest with Sinfony A3, E3, and T1 (p < 0.05). The power density through 0.5 mm thick resin specimens was lowest with dentin shades, Sinfony A3, Z350 A3, Supreme XT A3B, followed by enamel shades, Supreme XT A3E and Sinfony E3. The power density was highest with translucent shade, Sinfony T1 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Using indirect lab composites with dentin, enamel, and translucent shades rather than direct composites with one or two shades could be advantageous in transmitting curing lights through resin inlays.
