  • The subject of this research is the small-scale trade between South Korea and China (this trade is a so-called shuttle trade.) This research attempts to find the background to the emergence of the Sino-South Korean (cross-border) small-scale trade and the role of travel routes between the two countries. This research also aims to identify the development process of the bilateral small-scale trade by studying the scale of the small-scale trade and the organization of small-scale traders. Moreover, this research tries to discover the spatial characteristics of the interregional small-scale trade by reviewing the characteristics of traded goods; process of export and import and nodes of small-scale trade. To accomplish aforementioned purposes, the author discussed the relations between small-scale traders and maritime companies. The author also studied the internal change in the small-scale trade by focusing on the reinforcement of the regulation against the small-scale trade. Lastly, the author cited the case of the Soviet Union and middle-eastern Europe, which tremendously expanded the small-scale trades in the 1980s, in order to explain the growth of the Sino-South Korean small-scale trade.

  • This study aims to discover the characteristics of Sino-South Korean cross-border small-scale trade, which involves various players. Through this characteristics, this study ultimately intends to identify an operational mechanism of Sino-South Korean cross-border small-scale trade by investigating social capital as mobilized by small-scale traders. The results of this study can be expected to help understand how small-scale merchants address the uncertainty or risks surrounding their trade. Although it is an informal economic activity, the cross-border small-scale trade between South Korea and China is related to issues of the formal economy, such as job creation, benefits for local economies, and profit-seeking. Owing to this characteristics, small-scale trade is being conducted with the connivance of, or even with the tacit support from formal organizations, including municipal governments, customs, corporations, and shipping companies. Like trade in other countries, Sino-South Korean cross-border small-scale trade also requires different types of social capital, such as family networks, ethnic networks, social networks, and trust.

  • The paper is basically designed to reveal substitutability or complementary nature of export and import among Korea, China, and Japan by employing unit root test, cointegration technique, and vector error correction model(VECM). Empirical evidences are shown that the trading among these countries has been dominated by a complementary nature in the short run which enables it to promote trading in those countries. In the long run, however, the substitutability nature effects strongly to the trading among Korea, China, and Japan. To this end, it could be tentatively concluded that market-oriented trading policies are more effective to stimulate the export and import in those countries in the short run, while a trading policy has to be selectively implemented by the substitutability nature in the long run basis. For instance, a stability policy for exchange rates and various commercial policies could be set for a short term target. Whereas, the substitutability nature should be counted in building up a new industrial structure or in implementing FTA agreement among Korea, China, and Japan.

  • Recently, Korea had virtually reached an FTA deal with China on November 10, 2014 after the 14 rounds of negotiation during past two and half years. The two countries agreed to the FTA's 22 chapters, including products, services, investment, e-commerce, finance, communication, and other trade issues, but rice and several sensitive agricultural and fisheries products were excluded from the deal. Korea and China will remove their import tariffs on more than 90 percent of all products and more than 85 percent of imports by value within 20 years once the FTA is implemented. This paper intends to analyze the impacts of Korea-China FTA on the major industries in Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. Considering the statistics on the bilateral trade between China and Daegu-Gyeongbuk region, import tariff rates of the two countries, trade specialization indices of the major industries, and the package of Korea-China FTA deal, this study investigated the sectoral effects of Korea-China FTA on the four main industries, textiles, electrical-electronics, machinery and auto parts, and steel and iron industries in that region.

Second, the trade intensity index increased in 2007 4.57% up from 2002, showing increasingly closer connection between the two countries in the area of communications equipment. Third, according to revealed comparative advantage index, Korea's info-communications equipment seems to comparatively lag behind, but in terms of import-export structure is in the black. Fourth, in recent years, Korean equipment's market share in the Chinese market has been dropped due to the weakening competitiveness and the changing commodity supplies.

  • This study made an analysis of the effects of performance and learning orientation for the existing FTA on the intention to use a trilateral FTA among Korea, China and Japan. The results of the empirical analysis of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises(SMEs) located in Gwangju and Jeonnam provinces are as follows. First, there is a positive correlation between the effects of performance for the existing FTA and intention of a trilateral FTA. This result suggests that SMEs' performance feedback can be used as an asset of corporate experience and will be helpful to increase the intention to use a trilateral FTA by contributing to have sustainable competitive advantage of companies. Secondly, there is a positive correlation between the SMEs' learning orientation about FTA and intention to use a trilateral FTA. This result indicates that SMEs have more learning orientation for FTA. They actively acquire and diffuse information. These activities can be helpful for having prior knowledge and absorptive capacity. In conclusion, this study is considered to provide useful theoretical and practical implications that can contribute to enhancing the using intention of a trilateral FTA by explaining the significance of performance feedback and learning orientation.
