  • This study was conducted in order to provide as a basic materials of sea cliff vegetation structure through distribution related with the landform and growth pattern of mixed growth plants by ordination method in the Peucedanum japonicum community of Korea. The mixed growth plants of frequency over 10% growth with Peucedanum japonicum community of sea cliff was investigated as a total 26 species, and the frequency of appearing plants was the highest in the Aster spathulifolius(55.7%). Growing pattern of mixed growth plants was a difference by the landform factors as such the inland side, coastline side, flat and slope. Growing pattern was classified into typicality type, one-sided type and complex type. Growing pattern of the typicality type was good distribution in total landform factors, the one-sided type was good distribution in 1 landform factor and the complex type was good distribution in 2 landform factors. In growing pattern of mixed growth plants with Peucedanum japonicum, Artemisia capillaris and Sedum oryzifolium was typicality type, Elymus dahuricus and Artemisia princeps was one-sided type, and Aster spathulifolius, Miscanthus sinensis, Calystegia soldanella and Lysimachia mauritiana was complex type. In total plants of mixed growth, growing pattern of 16 species of 61.5% was good as complex type.

  • Korean Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) has been protected and used as the most ecologically and socio-culturally important tree species in Korea. However, as dieback of Korean red pines has occurred in the protected area of the forest genetic resources. The aims of this study is to identify causes for dieback of pine tree by investigating topographical characteristics of pine tree dieback and its correlation to meteorological factors. We extracted the dead trees from the time series aerial images and analyzed geomorphological characteristics of dead tree concentration area. As a result, 1,956 dead pine trees were extracted in the study region of 2,600 ha. Dieback of pine trees was found mostly in the areas with high altitude, high solar radiation, low topographic wetness index, south and south-west slopes, ridgelines, and high wind exposure compared to other living pine forest area. These areas are classified as high temperature and high drought stress regions due to micro-climatic characteristics affected by topographic factors. As high temperature and drought stress are generally increasing with climate change, we can evaluated that a risk of pine tree dieback is also increasing. Based on these geomorphological characteristics, we developed a pine tree dieback risk map using Maximum Entropy Model (MaxEnt), and it can be useful for establishing Korean red pine protection and management strategies.

  • Multi-beam echosounder data and grain size analysis data of surface sediment were acquired and analyzed in order to investigate the shelf-to-slope morphology, geological character, and their geological controlling factors in the southwestern margin of the Ulleung Basin. According to the morphological character, the continental shelf can be divided into two parts: (1) shallow (~100 m) and steep ($0.5^{\circ}$) inner shelf, (2) deep (100-300 m) and gentle ($0.2^{\circ}$) outer shelf. The continental slope is featured with eight distinct topographic depressions of various spatial dimension (~121 $km^2$ in area) and head wall gradient (${\sim}24.3^{\circ}$). They are developed adjacent to each other and presumably formed by submarine landslides which have recurred under the strong influences of earthquakes and eustatic sea-level change. The inner continental shelf and the continental slope are dominated by fine-grained sediment, whereas the outer continental shelf is dominated by coarse-grained sediment. The surface sediment distribution seems dominantly influenced by eustatic sea-level change. The outer continental shelf is mostly covered by coarse relict sediment deposited during lowstand sea-level, while the inner shelf is covered with recent sediment during highstand sea-level. The surface of the continental slope is covered with fine-grained sediments which were supplied by hemipelagic advection process.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the geographical location information data and the damage trends according to the type of landform for the study of various cultural properties in 44 traditional places with national designated cultural properties damaged by the racing earthquake on September 12, 2016. The landform type was the most enclosed type, and the location type was more frequent in the surrounding area, such as urban and rural areas. The waterside type was located along rivers, rivers, valleys, lakes, and oceans except for the top of the mountain, but this area was found to be vulnerable to earthquakes, It is understood that it should be referred from cultural property management the side. 26 of the total 44 were temples. The elevation and slope increased with increasing of the flat type, the background type, the enclosed type, the mountain type, and the top type. Most often located on 1-20 % slopes, with the slope facing south more often than not. Within the 10 km range from the epicenter, 23% were concentrated, within the range of nearly 65 km, the background type was closest, and was concentrated in the northeast and southwest from the epicenter. In this study, it is meaningful to analyze earthquake damage in various aspects from the viewpoint of traditional space which is a landscaping cultural property and it will be used for planning, designing and managing traditional spaces.

  • The empirical law that transverse dunes migrate inversely with their heights leads logically to the prediction that multiple dune ridges will converse to a single huge dune by merging. This contradicts the existence of the steady state dune fields on the Earth. The recent studies have emphasized dune collisions as a key mechanism to the stability of dunefield. The roles of wind shadow aspect ratio, however, have yet to be fully explored. This research aims to investigate the potential roles of wind shadow aspect ratio in the dynamical behaviors of transverse dune field. The simplified model is established for this, based upon allometric properties of transverse dunes, wind speedup on the stoss slope and sand trapping efficiency. The derived governing equations can be transformed to the zoning criteria and vector field for dune evolution. The dynamics analysis indicates that wind shadow aspect ratios do not produce convergent areas on the behavior space; rather, they just act as one of the factors that affect the trajectories of dune evolution. Though the model cannot represent the stability of dune field, but seem to produce a reasonable exponent for dune spacing-height relations.

  • An algorithm to allow shoreline movement during numerical experiment on sediment transport, deposition or resuspension for general coastal morphology is proposed here. The bed slope near shoreline, i.e. mean sea level, is influenced by bed material, tidal current, waves, and wave-induced current, but has been reported to remain within a stable range. Its annual variation is not large, either. The algorithm is adjusting the bathymetry, if the largest bed slope within shoreline band exceeds a given bed slope due to continuous erosion at zones below the shoreline. This algorithm automatically describes retreat of shoreline caused by erosion, when used within a numerical system. The algorithm was tested to a situation which includes a continuous dredging at a point, and showed satisfactory development of concentric circle contours. Next, the algorithm was tested to another situation which includes sinking of eroded part of bed plate, and produced satisfactory results, too. Finally, the algorithm was tested to a movable-bed laboratory experimental conditions. The shoreline movement behind detached breakwater was reasonably reproduced with this algorithm.

  • Recently as map making skills developed and as digital maps prevailed, peoples began to take interest in the realistic 3dimension topography rather than the flat 2 dimension one. The experiment is done by using the topographical information from the digital maps, To analyze the preciseness of this 3dimension topography, analysis of the coordinate-changed standard map image and the location errors of the plane and height from digital values of the map's topography by layers and features, were done. The visual results of locational values differed by every programs of coordinate transformation. Errors of locations also appeared from the methods of correcting the visual sources, when deciding the standard source's datum point. The plan's accuracy of the image data coordinate transformation is about ${\pm}4.1m$. In ground distance, therefore, it is included in the allowed error of the 1:25,000 scale changed map, satisfying the plan's accuracy. Also, by the use of reasonably spaced grid, it satisfied the visual topographical accuracy. Because the 3 dimension topographical map can be produced effectively and rapidly by using various scale's standard map image and the digital map, the further practical use of 3 dimension topographic map made by using the existing topographies and changed maps has high expectations.

  • This paper aims to investigate the value in culture, history and ecology of the Mt. Palgong. It attempts to build the strategy for making use of The Mt. Palgong by literature survey, interview, and field survey. The main results are as follows: 1) The boundary of physical geography of the Mt. Palgong is classified into two. The boundary of the Mt. Palgong limits to granite mass block in a narrow sense, while in a broad sense, the boundary of the Mt. Palgong includes a contact aureole to be bordered on the Mt. Palgong granite mass block. The boundary from a cultural viewpoint limits to Daegu city(excluding Dalseong county) and Gyeongsan city, Yeongcheon city, Gunwi county and Chilgok (Dongmyeong-myeon, Giseong-myeon) in Gyeongbuk province. 2) In the geological boundary, one of the south-west slope is clearer than that of the north-east slope of the Mt. Palgong. The landforms such as tor, sheeting joint and gutter are well developed as a whole. Mountain landform such as boulder stream, polygonal cracking is relatively well developed on the south-west slope, while river landform is relatively well developed on the north-east slope of the Mt. Palgong. 3) It is necessary to develope various masterpiece of interesting stories related to Mt. Palgong in order to make the Mt. Palgong excellent tour complex. 4) It is desirable to designate the Mt. Palgong as a national park for systematic management. A master plan should be ultimately designed to raise brand value of Daegu city, and make good identity of the city by restoring 'The Mt. Palgong Jecheondan' and registering 'Gatbawi' as world heritage. 5) It is reasonable that the method of development in The Mt. Palgong should be based on the pattern of 'slow life town'. 'The Mt. Palgong museum' will then be designed to give visitors all the informations on The Mt. Palgong.

  • Coastal dunes help stabilize the coastal landscape and protect the hinterland through dynamic interaction with sand beaches. Sometimes dune erosion occurs during the tropical cyclones, while dune recovery may naturally follow after the event. As the typhoon Kompasu passed through the Korean Peninsula early-September in 2010, it caused a rise in water in association with the storm, wave run-ups, and heavy rains in coastal areas. As the result, coastal dunes along the west coast of Korea were severely damaged during the storm. However, the degree and extent of erosion and recovery of dunes were found to be related with the condition of beach-dune systems including gradients of foreshore and front slope of the dune, sediment supply, vegetation, wind activity, and human interferences. Some dunes retreated landward more and more after the erosional event, while others recovered its original profile by aeolian transport processes mainly during the winter season. Vegetated dunes with pine trees were less recovered after the erosion than grass-covered dunes. In addition, dunes with artificial defense were more eroded and less recovered than those without hard constructions. According to the observation after the severe storm, it is likely that the sand transport process is critical to the dune recovery. Therefore, the interactions between beach and dune must be properly evaluated from a geomorphological perspective for the effective management of coastal dunes, including natural recovery after the erosion by storm events.

  • In order to improve a trip pattern in Mt. Halla climbing only to a summit, two trip programs with nature interpretation have been developed using the geomorphic characteristics of Mt. Halla which are distinct from those of mountains in the Korean peninsula. It also aims to help conservation of natural environment of Mt. Halla and to enhance the visitor satisfaction in Mt. Halla. The subalpine trip program is carried out on a 1.5 km-long trail between Wissaeoreum Hut and Janggumokoreum. Program participants are able to learn expertise about, and understand vulnerability of, a subalpine ecosystem, Consequently, the program can obtain an educational attainment getting them to recognize the necessity of preserving the subalpine zone of Mt. Halla as an important natural resource. The mountain river trip program is performed on a 1.5 km-long reach of Byeongmun River between Gwaneumsa trailhead and a gorge upstream of Gurin Cave. The program is capable of exhibiting effectively the river characteristics of Jeju Island using the geomorphic and hydrologic properties of Byeongmun River which differ from those of rivers in the Korean peninsula. Since the subalpine grassland and ephemeral stream of Mt. Halla are the visiting places which are rarely experienced in the Korean peninsula, the program participants can understand the regionality of Jeju Island as well as Mt. Halla through trip activities.
