  • Nowadays, in the European countries, landscape is spoken of its importance as often as environment, by those who are engaged in such fields as politics, administration, research and civil society. In Korea, while recognizing such an international trend, academics and administrators have made a series of efforts to reflect landscape concept on a variety of policies. However, it is recognized that the effects of these policies have not been satisfactory. Under these circumstances, this paper aims to examine the complex values and multiple meanings in the landscape, which have been discussed by landscape experts in the European countries. Then, it aims to the explore the future direction of policy and research on the landscape to be pursued in Korea, where there is relatively less interest in the issues of landscape. It is argued that landscape should be approached and understood from a holistic perspective, because it is a very complex concept with multiple meanings that have been coined differently depending on the situation. All the academic fields, involved in the landscape research, should try in co-operation to develop the comprehensive approach rather than the inter- and multi-disciplinary approach to the landscape study. In Korea, moreover, it is also necessary in the legislation to recognize the fact that degradation and retreat in the quality of landscape would make a negative effect on the quality of human daily life. Natural and cultural heritages contained in the rural landscape are also now in danger of disappearing. These heritages, therefore, should become an important subject for research and policy on landscape before the countryside is completely evacuated after the aging population die out. To make this happen, it is very urgent that evaluation and classification of landscape character should be undertaken from the holistic perspective, which is equipped with a methodology overcoming as well as encompassing the boundaries of academic fields. It is also equally very urgent that education on landscape should be provided to the politicians, citizens and students as well as the officials dealing with landscape matters. Finally, government should strive to make the landscape concept penetrate deeply as well as widely into the spatial planning and legislation process while designing and implementing a comprehensive landscape policy at the national level.

  • This research surveyed the native resources which BiBo(replenishing shortages by helping each other) landscapes have been preserved by aiming at the village settlement spaces of five cities and counties in Gangwon Youngseo province. This research reveals that BiBo landscape patterns of 41 village forests, 23 BiBo symbols, and 6 BiBo ponds were surveyed. The village forests are all 41 places, and were mainly made on the plains in front of villages. BiBo functions of the forests were in the order of the land obstructing the view of the mouth of a river which is the most as 13 places, the land obstructing the view of the mouth of river, situation complements, village protection, and protection against wind. Bibo symbols were all 23 places. Towers, stone towers, menhirs, and Maitreya stones were 12 places, Jangseungs(a signpost raising on the entrance of the village or a temple) were 6 places, Sotdae(a pole raising at the entrance of the village as the symbol of a board or a village protecting deity) was 1 place, and the others were made multiply in 4 places. Bibo symbols were located at 21 places in front of villages. The village protection in Bibo functions was 6 places. 6 Bibo ponds were surveyed. Most Bibo ponds were made for earth power leakage prevention.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze image factors of places located in natural and humanistically superior geographical locations. It aims to analyze image recognition and spatiality of scenically historical Sahmyook University, located northeast of Gangneung, through standardization. Method: The analysis method of landscape is composed of data investigation and research, and elements of how students, faculty, and visitors recognize a place's beautiful image will be examined. Result: A phenomenological approach was applied to how the images of beautiful place were set by FGI group meeting, and how such factors affect beautiful place's perception from the user's point of view. When looking at comprehensive ranking of image factors in recognition of beautiful landscapes, factors corresponding to forest landscapes appear at the top rank. In determining factors for its recognition, shared space with natural elements such as water, trees, flowers, etc. has been analyzed to have the biggest influence. Among factors corresponding to urban landscape, 'streets and pedestrian paths' is of medium importance and are recognized for it is artificial structure coexisting with natural elements shared with humans. The image corresponding to 'city area' and 'architecture' was analyzed to have insignificant influence on beautiful places' image recognition for artificial element was prioritized.

  • Recently, it is demanded to study about landscape. Landscape is an environment factor for improving life, a social resource for establishing image and identity of the area and also a tourist resource for earning profit. With this importance, landscape planning is being performed by local governments. However, classification for a rule about landscape planning is not prepared yet. For this purpose, classification of landscape is definitely required. Therefore, this article focuses on presenting method of classification Natural and Rural Landscape. We used Arcview 3.2 to draw watershed of the site, and calculated the percent of landform. We also took a picture which explain the landscape and made a survey of classifying the landscape. Due to this study, we were able to frame an algorithm of the landscape classification. This will contribute to classify the landscape type. This study needs more specific researches because it was supposed to target the entire Gyeonggi-Do however it only covered several regions. Through this results, it would be expected to develop the map of landscape character.

  • As the importance of rural landscapes has recently emerged due to an increase in number of urban to rural migrants into suburban area in Korea, this study empirically grasps the differences in subjective landscapes perceptions between native and non-native residents. and tried to explore new landscape management possibilities through the role of each residents group. To this end, based on the data collected through the 'photo-elicitation with walking', the residents' landscape perception objects, perception factors, and perceived feelings are derived, and then the differences and characteristics of landscapes perception between native and non-native residents group were analyzed. As a result, native residents perceived everyday landscapes relatively meaningfully and provided abundant information in all aspects, while non-native residents mainly recognized characteristic landscapes and responded more sensitively to visual and environmental perception factors than the natives. Non-native residents also showed strong willingness to improve the degraded landscapes. These results are expected to provide a basis for exploring the role of residents in rural landscape planning and management in the future.
