  • This study aims to compare the awareness of the social value of public libraries between users and non-users to materialize the abstract concept of social value and, thereby, to present measures that can be applied to the library field. For this purpose, a survey was conducted in person or online for 15 days from May 7, 2023, targeting Paju citizens. Frequency analysis, factor analysis, independent samples t-test, and one-way analysis of variance were conducted on 206 valid response copies using SPSS 25.0. In the results, it is shown that, first, for awareness of the social value of public libraries according to socio-demographic characteristics, there were significant differences depending on age, with in particular, awareness among those in their 10s and 40s being higher than other age groups. For awareness of community development, the awareness of the female group was higher than that of the male group, while, for the awareness according to occupation, it is shown that awareness was highest in the following order: student, others, housewife, self-employed, and office worker. Second, for the awareness of the social value of public libraries, the awareness of the user group was higher than that of the non-user group in all areas. Third, for awareness of the social value of public libraries according to the level of library use, there was no significant difference between groups. In conclusion, it is suggested that measures to encourage non-users to become users, develop new content and services targeting male group and those in their 60s, and 20s, and strengthen community activities are needed to raise awareness of the social value of Paju City public libraries in the future.

  • This study investigated the relationship between the physical features and personality impression of faces. Subjects were exposed to male and female facial photographic images. Using 7-points scales, subjects were asked to rate 31 personality traits. The three factors extracted from factor analysis were labeled social desirability, activity, and intelligence. The analysis of correlation between physical features and factor scores of faces indicated that there is a significant correlation between features of eye of male faces and intelligence and between features of chin of female faces and intelligence and social desirability. These results suggested that subjects judged the personality impression, based on different physical features in male and female feces.

  • Power and status are core elements that distinguish social classes and strongly influence social interaction. Although they are the foundation of social influence, they have different origins (Fragale et al., 2011). While power usually is based on personal ability or legal, institutional legitimacy, status is rooted in voluntary support from other people. Hence, whereas people with power often demonstrate egoistic behavior, those with high status show relationship-based altruism (Hasty & Maner, 2020). People recognize the difference between the two and have stereotypical beliefs or expectations about the people's behavior with high power or status (Magee, 2009). The current research tested how the judgment on social exclusion, the unique social influence of power and status, changes depending on the actor's power and status. We constructed social exclusion scenarios in which we manipulated actors' power and status and asked participants to rate an actor's pain and behavioral fairness. Participants' ratings showed that the actor's fairness and pain would differ depending on the actor's power and status (Expt. 1), which is consistent with the stereotypes above. In particular, the significant effects of the actor's anonymity in the cases of low power and high status (Expts. 2A, 2B) provide further evidence for the proposal that status but not power originates from voluntary support from others.

  • The fourth industrial revolution, which is all the rage in recent years in South Korea, comes from Klaus Schwab's book. Schwab claims that recent rapid technological innovation has inevitably determined the future of our society, and regulations on related policies need to be relaxed. The debate on the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the Korean society is also centered on deregulation policies. In particular, it is strongly argued that personal data protection regulation should be relaxed in a big data environments. The Science and technology studies has long criticized technological determinism. The future of technology can be changed by the will of regulatory authorities and the intervention of civil society. In this article, the author examines various discussions at home and abroad around the deregulation of data protection, including de-identification of personal data. Through this, the author criticizes the way of accepting the fourth industrial revolution theory, and draw its implications for the Korean society.

  • This is a theoretical study of which the goal is to investigate the meaning of a participation metaphor (PM) for learning and draw its implication for teaching and learning science. The review of relevant literature reveals that the PM is associated with the view of learning as ongoing participation in sociocultural practices within a community, and that cognitive apprenticeship is an instructional model related closely to the PM. It is then suggested that a community of learners should be developed if science teaching and learning are to be implemented in line with the PM. Finally, the present study briefly introduces a high school science club as an exemplar of science learning community, including what should be considered in science education research.

  • The purpose of the paper is to offer an analysis of adult probationers and their recidivism and to suggest a policy to prevent recidivism. Various data analysis methods like frequency analysis, cross-tabulation analysis, regression analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to determine which of a second offense factors and recidivism included in initial data investigation could effectively explain or forecast reference values. This study focused on identifying relations associated with follow-up misconducts of adults under probation, and supposing that those factors could be associated with their second offenses. But it failed to yield so much significant findings. Nevertheless, this study has its own significance in a sense that it explored various risk factors and desires of adults under probation according to empirical data, and suggested formulated measures useful in practice to select and categorize appropriate treatments.

  • The Internet is being utilized as a means of communication channel for science information. In this study, an experiment was conducted against college students, in which participants were assigned to one of the following four conditions: source status(professor, student) x social categorization(in-group, out-group). When the participants finished reading an online news article, perceived usefulness of and attitude toward the science technology were measured. The results show that the effect of source expertise on perceived usefulness was moderated by social categorization.

  • Music has been created and played in various environments over a long time, with each piece having distinct sentiments and stories. Different people can have varying interpretations of one song depending on their viewpoints shaped by personal experiences and attitudes. In fact, the audience's understanding may differ greatly from the songwriter's intended message. Knowing this, music can serve as a reflection of one's contemporary sentiment. In the works of art such as music, the creator's intention becomes the background of the work or, sometimes, the main meaning. However, given that popular music is often under the control of companies and distributors and influenced by "capital," creators are required to adjust to mainstream preferences and, therefore, cannot fully express themselves in their music. On the other hand, indie music allows creators to pursue their own music given its "independence" from capital. With this, this study aims to collect and analyze data on the activities that Korean indie bands carry out, and examine their meaning and significance in society.
