  • This study aims to examine the development and learning process of the argumentative abilities in elementary school students with regards to learning science. Toward this end, the SSI argumentation education program was implemented in conjunction with the science curriculum for sixth-grade students across 10 months. In this process, the scoring criteria in terms of formal and content aspects were developed and used to assess their argumentative text analysis and expression abilities. The results were as follows: First, the type of SSI influenced their ability to analyze argumentative texts. However, their formal and content aspects improved as learning progressed. Second, with regards to the formal aspect associated with the ability to express argumentative texts, reasons were initially most frequently cited. Over time, incorporating evidence to support these reasons and the use of rebuttal also increased. Third, in terms of content aspect, the level of use of all elements increased as learning progressed; however, level of acknowledgments and rebuttal elements exhibited a relatively slower progress. In summary, ability of the students to analyze and express argumentative texts improved as they increasingly gained experience in learning about argumentation. The study deduced that elementary school students can develop their argumentative abilities through appropriate learning support, such as teacher feedback, along with implementation of the SSI argumentation education program over an extended period. Based on these results, the study proposes the development of SSI materials and incorporation of SSI argumentative writing in the science curriculum.

  • In this paper, we study the effect of writing activity as mathematical communication on the students's mathematics achievement, learning attitude, and mathematical tendency. For this purpose, we construct a experimental class and then analyze the students' change in those aspects after applying three-divided-note writing activity and colleague feedback on their works those students are in the experimental class. As a result of the experiment, we find that three-divided-note writing activity and colleague feedback made some significant changes on the students achievement in mathematics, learning attitude, but does not affect on mathematical tendency. We also offer some suggestions for further research. Firstly, the mathematical communication ability must be stressed in mathematics education. For this purpose, we need to develop the teaching and the evaluation method to use not only writing but also reading, speaking, and listening skills so that many teachers can apply this method easily to their classes. Second, we need to fix some realistic problems such as fair evaluation , the numbers of students per class, the numbers of lesson, and too much extra-work, and so on. Thirdly, we suggest to explore some methods for extending three- divided-note writing activity to evaluate mathematical essay and to study educational effects of colleague feedback on mathematics performance assessment.

  • Peer assessment in educational setting, refers to activities in which students provide grades or comments on other students' accomplishments such as writing, presentation, or performances. In case of writing, peer assessment can allow instructors to give out more writing assignments, which were often avoided because of the burden of grading. Moreover, grading other students' writing can enhance learning by having students participate in the assessment process. This review will introduce major peer assessment systems and results from empirical studies on peer assessment, examine obstacles to its more wide-spread use, and discuss topics for further research. We hope this paper will facilitate further studies and use of peer assessment in actual educational settings, and eventually lead to many changes in assessment and teaching in Korea.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) system, which is called POMY (POSTECH Immersive English Study). In our system, students can study English while talking to characters in a computer-generated virtual environment. POMY also supports haptic feedback, so students can study English in a more interesting manner. Haptic feedback is provided by two platforms, a haptic chair and a force-feedback device. The haptic chair, which is equipped with an array of vibrotactile actuators, delivers directional information to the student. The force-feedback device enables the student to feel the physical properties of an object. These haptic systems help the student better understand English conversations and focus on studying. We conducted a user experiment and its results showed that our haptic-enabled English study contributes to better learning of English.
