The Effect of Algorithm Learning by Playing on Learning Motivation and Achievement (놀이를 통한 알고리즘 학습이 학습동기 및 학업성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • Abstract characteristic of algorithm may disturb improving learners' motivation and learning. Therefore, a design of teaching and learning method requires to minimize the learner's intrinsic cognitive load and to maximize the learning motivation. We developed an algorithm learning program by playing to enhance learning motivation and achievement for vocational high school students. And then, we implemented the developed program in vocational high school classes and analysed the educational effects of the developed program. We found that the developed program was helpful in enhancing learners' learning motivation and achievement level. It means that doing the activities, such as playing games, helps learners to acquire an algorithm concept that has abstract nature and is difficult to understand.

  • 외국어학습의 성공여부는 학습자의 강한 동기유발에 달렸는데, 현재 우리나라에서는 영어학습의 강세에 밀려 프랑스어를 포함한 제 2 외국어 학습 열의가 점차 사라져 가고 있는 실정이다. 각 대학에 프랑스어를 전공하는 학과가 존재하는 한, 프랑스어 교육은 계속되어질 것이나, 과거와는 달리 고등학교에서 프랑스어의 기초를 배우고 대학의 프랑스어 학과에 입학하는 학생의 수가 점차 줄어들고 있다. 또한 현재의 대학 입시 제도가 학생들의 학과에 대한 적성 여부와 상관없이 수능성적 결과 점수에 따라 학과를 정하게 되므로 처음부터 프랑스어를 배우고자 하는 동기가 결여된 상태에서 전공 언어 학습을 시작하게 된다. 프랑스어를 가르치면서 현장에서 가장 고심하게 되는 문제는 첫째 학생들에게 어떻게 하면 프랑스어에 대한 흥미를 유발시킬 수 있는가 하는 점이고, 둘째로는 대학 4년이라는 짧은 기간 동안 어떻게 하면 정확한 프랑스어를 학습시킬 수 있는가 하는 것이다. Development of Teaching-Learning Plans Applying ARCS Motivation Strategies for Food Safety Education (ARCS 동기유발 전략을 적용한 식품 안전 교육 교수·학습 과정안 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop teaching-learning plans applying ARCS strategies for food safety education, focusing on units related to the 'food selection and safe cooking'. To achieve this purpose, this study was conducted in the following order of analysis, design, development, assessment I, revision I, assessment II, revision II, and completion. In the analysis stage, 2015 revised curriculum and middle school technology-home economics textbooks(12 kinds) contents of 'food selection and safe cooking' among content elements of core concept 'safety' were analyzed. In the design and development stages, teaching-learning plans, teaching-learning materials, and evaluation rubric for teaching-learning outcomes using the ARCS motivation strategy were developed. In the phases of assessment I and revision I, evaluation items were selected as open-ended questions about food safety education factors and ARCS strategies, and their validities were verified by four experts. The teaching-learning plans for nine lessons were revised based on the feedbacks such as evaluation plans considering the correspondence between instruction and evaluation, strategy to reinforce intrinsic motivation, correction of improper contents composition, and so on. In the phases of assessment II and revision II, the validity of the three items, including relevance of each teaching-learning to food safety education, suitability of learning goals, and appropriateness of motivation strategy, was verified by seven experts. The final teaching-learning plans for 10 lessons were developed by revising and supplementing the data by compiling opinions of the assessment II. It is expected that this study can contribute to food safety education for middle school students, and that teaching-learning plans which apply ARCS strategies for food safety education will be used as good references for school teachers and curriculum developers.

Development of Technology·Home Economics teaching-learning plans using ARCS strategies to improve character for middle school students: Focusing on the unit of 'Understanding families' (인성교육을 위해 기술·가정교과 '가족의 이해' 단원에 ARCS 동기유발 전략을 적용한 교수·학습 과정안 개발 및 평가)

  • The purposes of this study were to develop and apply teaching-learning plans using ARCS strategies to improve character of middle school students and analyze whether a home economics class helps to give positive effects on youth character change. Nine-period classes were conducted for 110 male students in 4 classes of M middle school in Gwangju metropolitan city for 5 weeks from March 6 through April 7 in 2017. The effectiveness of classes were examined with learners' class assessment and pre- and post- character index test. The research steps and results in this study are as follows. First, the teaching-learning plans for 9 periods were developed for the character education class of the chapter 'Understanding families'. These teaching and learning course plans were designed to enhance learner's interests in learning using ARCS motivational strategy and improve character of middle school students in consideration of character elements. In the chapter 'Understanding families' of Technology Home Economics in middle school, the teaching-learning plans for 9 periods, 14 student activity sheets, and 2 powerpoint materials for teaching and learning were developed. Second, students who had the character education classes using ARCS motivational strategy showed significant differences in all character elements. Therefore, the character education class using ARCS shows positive effects to build up character of middle school students. Third, the character education classes using ARCS motivational strategy increased the class satisfaction of learners. The character education class teaching and learning course plans and learning materials in Technology Home Economics using ARCS motivational strategy will be used as a basic resource to build up students' character in the future.

Behavioral motivation-based Action Selection Mechanism with Bayesian Affordance Models (베이지안 행동유발성 모델을 이용한 행동동기 기반 행동 선택 메커니즘)

  • A robot must be able to generate various skills to achieve given tasks intelligently and reasonably. The robot must first learn affordances to generate the skills. An affordance is defined as qualities of objects or environments that induce actions. Affordances can be usefully used to generate skills. Most tasks require sequential and goal-oriented behaviors. However, it is usually difficult to accomplish such tasks with affordances alone. To accomplish such tasks, a skill is constructed with an affordance and a soft behavioral motivation switch for reflecting goal-oriented elements. A skill calculates a behavioral motivation as a combination of both presently perceived information and goal-oriented elements. Here, a behavioral motivation is the internal condition that activates a goal-oriented behavior. In addition, a robot must be able to execute sequential behaviors. We construct skill networks by using generated skills that make action selection feasible to accomplish a task. A robot can select sequential and a goal-oriented behaviors using the skill network. For this, we will first propose a method for modeling and learning Bayesian networks that are used to generate affordances. To select sequential and goal-oriented behaviors, we construct skills using affordances and soft behavioral motivation switches. We also propose a method to generate the skill networks using the skills to execute given tasks. Finally, we will propose action-selection-mechanism to select sequential and goal-oriented behaviors using the skill network. To demonstrate the validity of our proposed methods, "Searching-for-a-target-object", "Approaching-a-target-object", "Sniffing-a-target-object", and "Kicking-a-target-object" affordances have been learned with GENIBO (pet robot) based on the human teaching method. Some experiments have also been performed with GENIBO using the skills and the skill networks.

  • Students' interest and motivation of a lesson can be deeply influenced by how their teacher starts his or her lesson. So the introduction part of math classes should be very carefully and thoughtfully designed. The goal of this study is to serve the foundation for developing the practical types of introduction part of math classes and to draw the implications for planning and teaching math classes. For these, 19 lesson plans titled by 'volume of cylinders' composed by elementary teachers and 2 lesson videos on the internet are analyzed. Finally, seven types of introduction parts of math class are probed and several implications are suggested.

  • Using robots in the programming classes may help to induce learners' interest and motivation. However, simple introduction of new media, such as robots, may cause to increase learners' interest level temporarily, but also may give cognitive overload and offense against learning motivation. We developed a robot programming course to induce intrinsic motivation and to reduce cognitive load for learners in the programming education. And then, we implemented the developed course in college programming classes and analysed the educational effects of robot programming learning on novice learners' flow level. We found that robot programming course was helpful in enhancing novice learners' flow level. Especially, the element of 'autotelic experience', which explains an intrinsic motivation, was higher than conventional programming course group. It means that the developed strategies for robot programming course provides positive effects on learners' intrinsic motivation.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest effective reading guidance using studying cartoons for the reading motivation. We conducted a survey at 3 junior high schools in Chung-Nam province, consisting of 182 students in 6 classes in an attempt to analyze what motivates reading. We propose strategies that can encourage students to read using cartoons, books, and multimedia guides.

  • 지적 능력은 정상인데 해당 연령층에서 기대하는 학습 결과를 나타내지 못하여 교육성취도가 정규학년 수준에 크게 미달되거나 학습 속도가 부진한 특수학습장애 아동들은 일반 아동들과 같은 수업을 받는다. 이런 현실은 학부모나 교사들의 특별한 배려가 없다면 당연히 장애 아동들의 학습에 대한 흥미를 떨어뜨릴 수 있다. 우리 나라에서 특수교육을 받는 장애 아동 중 가장 많은 수를 차지하는 특수학습장애 아동들을 위한 특별한 프로그램의 개발이 절실하다. 이에 본 논문은 동기 이론들 기반으로 특수학습장애 아동들의 흥미를 길러 줄 수 있는 프로그램을 개발하였다. 이의 개발로 특수학습장애 아동들의 주의 집중 능력과 성취동기를 길러주고, 흥미를 키워주므로 학습에 대한 의욕을 가질 수 있다.
