Preservice Elementary Teachers' Attitudes toward Science and Process Skills (초등 예비교사들의 과학에 대한 태도와 탐구 능력)

  • The purpose of this study is to inquire the properties and relationship of attitudes toward science and process skills of preservice elementary teachers. Two instruments were used to collect the data, SAS(Science Attitude Scales) for checking up attitude toward science and TIPS II(Test of Integrated Process Skill II) for inspecting science process skills. Three main results were revealed. First, preservice elementary teachers' the attitude toward science and science process skills could not show the significant differences by gender. This result is differ from the results of preceding researches which had set up the students of elementary, middle and high school as objects. Second, the properties of preservice elementary teachers' the attitude toward science and science process skills according to the course in high school were also differ from those of preceding researches having students as objects. The preservice elementary teachers who got the literary courses in high school were more confident in science learning and perform that those who have the academic background of science courses in high school. In addition, although they showed better abilities in two sub-scales of science process skills, the preservice teachers with science course didn't show the better science process skills than those who had taken the literary course in total score of science process skill test. Third, there was a significant relationship between attitude toward science and science process skills of preservice elementary teachers but just one sub-scale was related with science process skills. According to these results, it can be said that the preceding results with students as objects can not be applied to and preservice elementary teachers should be guided by the methods which are considering their special properties.

Knowledge of Preservice Elementary Teachers with Respect to Division (나눗셈 개념에 대한 초등예비교사의 이해도 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the preservice elementary teachers' knowledge of division through open-ended problems focused on the following perspectives in understanding division : connectedness between procedural and conceptual knowledge as well as the knowledge of units. Results indicates that the preservice elementary teachers showed low level of understanding of division such as the making word problem including division of fractions and the identification of the units in division operation.

Characteristics of Teaching Orientation and PCK of Science Teachers in Online-offline Mixed Learning Environment (온-오프라인 혼합 학습환경에서 과학교사의 교수 지향과 PCK 특징)

  • This study explore characteristics of teaching orientation and pck of science teachers in online-offline mixed learning environment. Data consisted of open-ended survey, semi-structured interview, class observation, field notes from 12 science teachers. We categorized teaching orientation considering both science education goals and science teaching·learning orientation. There were 8 different teaching orientations such as 'understanding science concepts-lecture centered' 'constructing science concepts-inquiry based' 'applying science concepts and inquiry-inquiry based' 'applying science concepts and inquiry-lectured centered' 'analyzing and judging science information-inquiry based' 'developing scientific attitude-inquiry based' 'developing scientific attitude-lecture centered' and 'developing perception of interrelationships among science, technology, and society-inquiry based'. Teachers with inquiry based teaching·learning orientation seemed to have knowledge of science curriculum specific to online learning environment for student inquiry. While teachers with 'understanding science concepts-lecture centered' teaching orientation appeared to have questioning strategy of checking student understanding and strategy of repeating a lecture, teachers with 'constructing science concepts-inquiry based' teaching orientation appeared to have knowledge of instructional strategies to perform online group activities targeting student construction of knowledge and to replace face-to-face group activities with virtual experiments and individual experiments. While teachers with 'understanding science concepts-lecture centered' teaching orientation did not show knowledge of student science learning, teachers with 'constructing science concepts-inquiry based' teaching orientation appeared to have knowledge of student difficulties in inquiry based learning.

Analysis of Images of Middle School Students' Preference and Avoidance of Science Teachers by Class Situation Using Semantic Network Analysis (언어 네트워크 분석을 활용한 중학생들의 과학 교사에 대한 수업 상황별 선호, 기피 이미지 분석)

  • The modern society is rapidly changing, and accordingly, the required teacher image is changing as well. Middle school students are immature, when they undergo major changes both physically and mentally, and teachers have a great influence. How students perceive the teacher determines the relationship between teachers and students. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze what kind of teacher image middle school students want. The purpose of this study is to analyze the image of a science teacher who prefers and avoids each class situation perceived by middle school students. To this end, 502 middle school students were divided into five classes: class type, class material presentation method, subject instruction method, subject content explanation method, and class atmosphere, and the image of science teacher who prefers and avoids is described in an open format. Concepts presented by middle school students were analyzed through semantic network analysis (SNA). The conclusions of this study are as follows: first, in order to make middle school students interested in science, an inquiry-centered experiment class should be conducted. Second, the change of class by science teacher can change it into preferred science class. Third, student-centered classes should be conducted according to the level so that students can understand. Finally, science teachers continue to strive through communication between science teachers and students, and students and students, and look forward to changes in science classes through this.

A study of the search for a good secondary science classes: a case study of the alternative school students ('좋은 중등 과학 수업'에 대한 탐색: 대안학교 학생의 사례를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary students' perception of a good secondary science classes. Subjects were 18 secondary students who enrolled in alternative school located in Korea. The instruments of this study was a questionnaire which consisted of 18 items on 4 domains. Also data were collected from in-deep interviews and students' drawing. The results of the study were summarized as follows; First, students explained that good schools have the characteristics of the interesting and respectful atmosphere. Also there are good relationships between teachers and students. Second, they emphasized that good teachers are humanistic teachers. Third, good science classes are based on the constructivism in terms of the education methods. The results suggest that it may be necessary to remodel the merits of the alternative schools to solve the problem of public school. It is important to develop expertise of the science teachers in alternative school through teacher education programs based on the constructivism. Also it is necessary to provide appropriate learning space and various media for effective science teaching and learning in alternative school.

  • Research in teachers' knowledge for teaching mathematics (KTM) has been gradually growing for the past several years. With various conceptualizations about what teachers need to teach mathematics, there have been studies to find out the relationship between teachers' KTM and their students' achievement. In this paper, I reviewed various conceptualizations of teacher's mathematical knowledge for teaching, and existing qualitative and quantitative studies about this relationship. Based on the review, I identified the challenges to studying this relationship mainly focusing on the existence of a phase-teaching practice-between teachers' KTM and students' learning. Considering the challenges that have been identified in the literature review, I proposed topics for future studies that would contribute to our understanding how the teachers' KTMare related to their students' achievement, and investigate further about whether and how teacher-student interaction in classroom is related to changes in teachers' KTM.

Analysis of Belief Types in Mathematics Teachers and their Students by Latent Class Analysis (잠재집단분석(LCA)에 의한 수학교사와 학생들의 신념유형 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the mathematical beliefs of students and teachers by Latent Class Analysis(LCA). This study surveyed 60 teachers about beliefs of 'nature of mathematics', 'mathematic teaching', 'mathematical ability' and also asked 1850 students about beliefs of 'school mathematics', 'mathematic problem solving', 'mathematic learning' and 'mathematical self-concept'. Also, this study classified each student and teacher into a class that are in a similar response, analyzed the belief systems and built a profile of the classes. As a result, teachers were classified into three types of belief classes about 'nature of mathematics' and two types of belief classes about 'teaching mathematics' and 'mathematical ability' respectively. Also, students were classfied into three types of belief classes about 'self concept' and two types of classes about 'School Mathematics', 'Mathematics Problem Solving' and 'Mathematics Learning' respectively. This study classified the mathematics belief systems in which students were categorized into 9 categories and teachers into 7 categories by LCA. The belief categories analyzed through these inductive observations were found to have statistical validity. The latent class analysis(LCA) used in this study is a new way of inductively categorizing the mathematical beliefs of teachers and students. The belief analysis method(LCA) used in this study may be the basis for statistically analyzing the relationship between teachers' and students' beliefs.

Marital Satisfaction and Family Strengths in Dual-Income Teachers (맞벌이교사들의 결혼만족도와 가족건강성)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the marital satisfaction and family strengths in dual-Income teachers. The subjects of this study were 289 dual-income teachers in the Gyeongnam Area. Korea. The major findings obtained from this study are summarized as follows: 1) The degree of marital satisfaction of the dual-Income teachers was 5.22 on a scale of 0-7.0. The significant variables were sex, the educational degree, religion, the type of family. housework-helper, self-esteem and job satisfaction in dual-Income teachers. 2) The degree of family strengths of dual-Income teachers was 3.88 on a scale 0-5.0. The significant variables were economic level, self-esteem, job satisfaction, and marital satisfaction in dual-Income teachers. 3) There was a close correlation between the marital satisfaction and family strengths in dual-Income teachers.

  • 교사의 자리 배치와 교우관계 형성의 관계성을 밝히려는 목적으로 2016년에 일반계 고등학교 3학년 문과반 학생 28명을 대상으로 사회 네트워크 분석을 하였다. 연구결과 학급 내 하위네트워크가 4개를 발견하였고, 친밀도가 가장 낮은 학생을 전체 네트워크의 구조적공백에 위치하였을 때, 긍정적인 교우관계를 확인하였다.

Development of a data analysis system for preventing school violence based on AI unsupervised learning (AI 비지도 학습 기반의 학교폭력 예방 데이터 분석 시스템 개발)

  • School violence has long been recognized as a social problem, and various efforts have been made to prevent it. In this study, we propose a system that can prevent school violence by analyzing data on the frequency of conversations between students, friendship and preference to be in the same group. This data was quantified using a Likert scale questionnaire, and also grouped into the appropriate number of clusters using the K-means algorithm. Additionally, the homeroom teacher observed the frequency and nature of conversations between students, and targeted specific individuals or groups for counseling and intervention, with the aim of reducing school violence. Data analysis revealed that the teachers' qualitative observations were consistent with the quantified data based on student questionnaires, and therefore applicable as quantitative data towards the identification and understanding of student relationships within the classroom. The study has potential limitations. The data used is subjective and based on peer evaluations which can be inconsistent as the students may use different criteria to evaluate one another. It is expected that this study will help homeroom teachers in their efforts to prevent school violence by understanding the relationships between students within the classroom.
