  • The objective of this study was to examine the relation between delinquency and career maturity in school adolescents and to determine whether activities for enhancing career maturity can have protective effects against juvenile delinquencies. Research questions for this study are: first, how serious school adolescents' delinquencies are; and second, what relation there is between delinquency and career maturity in school adolescents. Third, how different is school adolescents' career maturity according to their experience in delinquencies? The results of this study were as follows. First, 55.8% of the school adolescents committed one or more of the 14 types of delinquent acts included in the delinquency inventory during the last one year, and the percentage was higher among male students than among female ones. Second, no correlation was observed between the school adolescents' overall delinquency level and overall career maturity. According to the sub-factors of career maturity, however, the overall delinquency level was in a negative correlation with objectiveness and a positive correlation with independence/decisiveness. That is, objectiveness was higher in the group without experiences in delinquencies than in the group with such experiences. and Type II status offenses (truancy, runaway) was in a negative correlation with overall career maturity, and in a negative correlation with objectiveness and confidence. Third, no significant difference was observed in career maturity between those with experience in delinquencies and those without. Among the sub-factors of career maturity, however, objectiveness was higher in those without experience in delinquencies than in those with. and Overall career maturity, and objectiveness and confidence among the sub-factors of career maturity were significantly higher in those without experience in Type II (truancy, runaway) status offenses than those with. The results of this study suggest that the objectiveness of career maturity can be a protective factor against juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, they suggest that activities for enhancing career maturity may protect adolescents from Type II status offenses. These results may provide basic materials necessary to develop career counseling approaches and interventions strategies for preventing school adolescents' delinquencies.

Data from 5th year(2014) Korean Children and Youth Panel Study(KCYPS) on 2035 nation-wide second year middle school students was analyzed by utilizing Regression analysis and path analysis. Results of the analysis showed first, parents' neglect had a negative effect on adolescents' self-identity, life satisfaction, and school adjustment. Second, adolescents' school adjustment improved with their self-identity and life satisfaction included as mediating effects. Third, the effect of parents' neglect on adolescents' school adjustment was partly mediated by the effects of subject's self-identity and life satisfaction. Furthermore, the need for program development to enhance adolescents' self-identity, life satisfaction and school adjustment was suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the mediation effects of social-support for adolescents' game addiction and school adaptation. For this study, 353 middle school students in the West-Gyungsangnamdo areas were included in the analysis. Setting as covariates, a mediator and extra variables significantly correlated with the criterion variable, regression analysis, SPSS Macro and bootstrapping methods were used to assess the mediation effects of social-support for adolescents' game addiction and school adaptation. The results showed that adolescents highly addicted to games tended to have more difficulty in adapting to school. However, it was found that social-support (mediator) fully mediated the influence of the adolescents' game addiction (predictor) on school adaptation (criterion variable). Based on the results of the analysis, we suggest implications for social work practice to improve how game-addicted adolescents settle down in middle school through increasing social-support - the mediator - and hence bring about a decrease in game addiction among adolescents.

  • This study examines the mediating effect of self-esteem in the path between parental attachment and career barriers for out-of-school youth and proposes measures to reduce the level of career barriers for out-of-school youth. As analysis data, we used data from the 5th year of the panel survey of school dropout youth conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, and used 318 out-of-school youth for analysis. As a result of analysis using the statistical programs SPSS 23.0 and Amos 23.0 version, the mediating effect of self-esteem was confirmed in the path between emotional support, a subfactor of parental attachment, and all subfactors of career barriers. These results suggest that multifaceted efforts are needed to improve parental attachment (emotional support, economic support) and self-esteem, which influence the level of career barriers for out-of-school youth. Accordingly, based on the results of this study, practical measures were specifically presented to educate parents of out-of-school youth and improve their self-esteem.

Analyses of data provided by 450 adolescents attending secondary schools in Gyeongnam Province suggested the following results. First, adolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities differed by gender, religion, and academic grades. Adolescents who were girls, who had religions, and whose academic grades were higher showed higher levels of positive attitude toward volunteer activities than their counterparts who were boys, who did not have religion and whose academic standing was lower. Second, adolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities significantly differed by the family factor. To be specific, parental attention, parental support and family's participation in volunteer work made differences to the adolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities. Third, the adolescents took significantly different attitudes toward voluntary activities according to the school factor. Significant differences were found according to attention and support from teachers. The students whose teachers had more interest in voluntary service and whose teachers offered more aid took a more positive attitude to voluntary service. Forth, some of the personal, family, and school factors were associated with adolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities. Among the personal factors, gender, religion, academic standing, and morality were associated with dolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities. Those who were girls, who were religious, whose academic standing was higher, and who were more moral took a more positive attitude toward volunteer activities. Among family and school factors, parental attention/support and attention and support from teachers affected the voluntary service attitude of the adolescents. The students whose parents had more interest and gave more support and whose teachers showed more interest and offered more support took a more positive attitude toward volunteer activities.
