  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the preferred SSI topics of students and teachers in elementary, middle, and high schools. It analyzed the similarity of students' and teachers' preferred SSI topics by school level using the cosine similarity measure. A total of 566 students and 327 teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools participated in the study. Sixty topics were identified and listed in the areas of environment, science and technology, health and medicine, and other social issues based on the literature and SSI programs. Students and teachers were asked to select five of their favorite topics. The data was collected online using SurveyMonkey. The collected data was divided into six groups of students and teachers, and the frequency of topic selection was analyzed within each group. The topic preference similarity was analyzed by calculating vector values based on the frequency of the selected topics and measuring the cosine similarity between students, teachers, and teachers and students by school level. The results are as follows: First, the cosine similarity of SSI Preferred Topics between students' school-level cohorts was higher between middle and high school students (0.982) than between elementary and middle school students (0.651) or between elementary and high school students (0.662). Second, the cosine similarity of SSI Preferred Topics between teachers' school-level cohorts was similar for all comparison groups between elementary, middle, and high school. Third, the SSI topic preference similarity between students and teachers by school level had a higher cosine similarity between the elementary student and teacher cohorts (0.974) than the other school level comparisons, middle school (0.621) or high school (0.645). Access to topics of interest to students in SSI education is strongly associated with motivation and persistence in learning, as well as an enjoyable learning experience and positive attitudes toward learning. Therefore, when designing SSI lessons, it is important to examine topics from the perspective of student interest, especially if the teacher has selected SSI topics that are different from students' preferences. Careful instructional design will be needed to overcome the gap.

The comparison focused on goals and contents in science education of each country. The goals for science education in each country were very similar. They included understanding knowledge, acquiring inquiry skills, developing positive attitudes towards science, and appreciating S-T-S in most countries. But each country's goal setting level was different; some countries set the same goals for several grades and other countries set different goals for each grade. Goals provided for each grade were more specific and elaborated. Science contents were categorized differently in each country. In Korea, science contents were categorized in energy, matter, living things, and earth. On the other hand, science contents were composed of 8 categories including unifying concepts and processes in science, science as inquiry, physical science, life science, earth and space science, science and technology, science in personal and social perspectives, and history and nature of science in the United States. In the United Kingdom, science enquiry, life processes and living things, materials and their properties, and physical process were categories for science contents. In Singapore, science contents were organized by themes relevant to students' everyday experience. Implications for goals and contents in science education to prepare students to live and work in a future society were suggested based on the results of the study.

  • This study analyzes how the academic achievement of students in Korea changes as they transition from 4th grade of elementary school to 2nd grade of middle school, considering that the 4th graders in the previous TIMSS cycle become 2nd graders in the next cycle. In particular, this study selects and compares the eight main countries in the TIMSS math evaluation (Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, USA, UK, Australia, and Russia) to analyze the trend of change in academic achievement of Korean students according to school grade transition. The trend of change in academic achievement of students was analyzed not only overall but also by content area (number, geometry and measurement, data representation (data and probability/data and probability), gender, and regional scale. The analysis focused on the average score and the proportion of students by achievement level. The results of the study are as follows. First, there was no significant change in the average score of Korean students' academic achievement as the school grade transitioned, but the achievement gap widened in terms of the proportion by achievement level. Second, there were differences in students' academic achievement by content area according to school grade transition, and the pattern differed depending on the evaluation cycle. Third, there was a significant gap in students' math academic achievement depending on gender and regional scale of school location. This study reveals that the achievement gap among students in our country widens as they transition between school levels. The gap is found to vary in terms of achievement level, math content area, student gender, and school location. To alleviate these disparities, more substantial research and support are proposed in addition to policy implementation by the government or provincial offices of education.

  • This study analyzed the moderating effect according to school levels in the structural relationship between stressful interpersonal relationships at work and rumination in teachers' depression. For this study, a research model was formed based on theoretical understandings and a literature review. The researchers surveyed 811 teachers at primary and secondary schools to measure scales of depression, rumination, and stress in interpersonal relationships at work. Primary education and secondary education were the grouping variables for the school levels, and the collected data was analyzed using multi-group structural equation modeling. Also, to affirm equivalence between the two models, the data was investigated using the constrained model of measurement equivalence. The research results verified the equivalence between the two models and the moderating effect by comparing the path coefficients of the two models on the assumption of equivalence constraint. As a result, the moderating effect according to school levels was revealed on the path from stressful interpersonal relationships at work to depression. Grounded on this analysis, stress in interpersonal relationships at work mediates the impact of rumination in teachers' depression. In addition, the research revealed that the moderating effects on stressful interpersonal relationships at work varied according to school level, and the moderating effect of stress in interpersonal relationships at work affected middle school teachers but not primary school teachers.
