  • The purpose of the present study is to observe in-depth what kind of changes the establishment of a female basketball team in a college of education and the experiences the female basketball players have within that situation bring to their lives and their paths in life and social implications. To achieve this purpose, the female basketball team at the Department of Physical Education in P University was selected as a research environment and its members as research participants and qualitative research was conducted. Research results showed first, that female basketball athletes were already on a set path before they entered college. They had not thought about their path in life independently and had a passive attitude towards their life paths and were experiencing a culture in which studies were not permitted. Second, female basketball athletes discovered a new path upon college entrance. While meeting various friends, they gained friends and not just colleagues and after becoming aware that the main character in their lives is 'themselves', they showed autonomy. Based on this, factors for their change, which are the implications of this study, were first, the environment of P University's college of education which has strict regulations and a strong emphasis on academics when compared to other universities, second, the identity of being the first enrollments into the female basketball team of P University's college of education and the distinct characteristics of being a female athlete, third, the group's leader who contributed to their positively directed change. Ultimately, these factors served an important role in leading their change in the large frame of a university environment.

Total number of children who were battered during one-month period (1-30 April 1990) prior to the survey was 918 (73.1%). Among the battered children 87 (6.9%) were severely battered (twice or more in a month by kicking or more severe method) and 831 children (66.2%) were moderately battered (all other battering than severe battering). The percentage of battered children and degree of battering were not significantly different between two schools in Taegu and between urban and rural areas. Common reasons for battering were disobediance (61.9%), making troubles (34.9%), and poor school performance (33.3%). However, 16.1% of severely battered children responded that the perpetrators battered them to wreak their anger and 5.7% of them did not know the reason why they were battered. A majority of the battered children (65%) regretted their fault after being battered but 20.7% of the severely battered children wanted to run away and 9.2% of them had an urge to commit suicide. While most of the physical injuries due to battering were minor as bruise (52.7%) but some of them were severe, e.g., bone fracture (2.5%), skin laceration (1.5%), and loss of consciousness. (0.2%). The common psycho-behavioral complaints of the severely battered children were unwillingness to study (31%), unwillingness to live (17.2%), and reluctance to go home (13.8%). The incidence rate of severe battering was significantly higher (p=0.018) among the children living in a quarter attached to a store (14.0%) than the children living in an apartment (6.6%) and individual house (6.2%). The incidence rate of severe battering was higher among children living in a rental house (8.4%) than children living in their own house 6.3%) (p=0.005). The children of father only working (5.1%) and mother only working (4.5%) had a lower incidence rate of severe battering than the children of both parents working (9.1%) and both parents unemployed (20.7%) (p=0.006). More children were battered when there was a sick family member (80.8%) compared with the children without a sick family member (71.4%) (p=0.001). The incidence rates of severe and moderate battering increased as the frequency of quarreling between mother and father increased (P=0.000). The percentage of unbattered children was higher among children whose father's occupation was professional (39.4%) than that of the total study subjects (26.9%) (p<0.001).

  • A survey was carried out regarding university students' recognition of high-caffeine energy drinks in an effort to identify and improve problems as well as provide basic data. Most of the subjects had previous experience of energy drink consumption. Studies showed that most students consumed energy drinks when studying. Regarding frequency of energy drink consumption, most students' responded "1~6 times a year"; female students showed lower frequency of energy drink consumption than male students. Both male and female students used convenience stores to purchase energy drinks. In most cases, students became aware of energy drinks through advertisements on TV, radio, newspapers, and magazines. The most important factor affecting their energy drink purchase and consumption status was taste. The most frequent adverse effect they experienced after drinking an energy drink was unusual heart-pounding, whereas the biggest problem caused by energy drink consumption was addiction. This study indicates that students should have a better understanding of the problems associated with excessive and prolonged high-caffeine intake. In addition, instructions for proper purchasing and consumption of high-caffeine energy drinks should be provided as well as education and campaigns concerning symptoms caused by high-caffeine energy drink consumption so that students may refrain from excessive consumption. Further, civil organizations and the government need to devise effective measures for proper regulation of high-caffeine energy drink consumption.

  • This study examines longitudinally influences that parents have on their children's academic achievement and the mediating role of various psychological factors. In terms of parents-child relationship, the following variables are examined: Social support from parents, achievement pressure, parental expectation, sense of indebtedness to parents, and respect for parents. For adolescents functioning, the following variables are examined: Efficacy for self-regulated learning, achievement motivation, studying time, and academic achievement. In the first phase of the longitudinal study, a total of 961 Grade 6 students completed a questionnaire. In the second phrase, a total of 856 students completed a questionnaire when they were Grade 7. In the third phrase, a total of 830 students completed a questionnaire when they were Grade 9. In the third phase, a matched sample of 722 fathers and 767 mothers of the adolescents completed a questionnaire. From the sample, 694 matched sample of adolescents, mothers, and fathers have been selected for the following analysis. The results of the path analysis indicate that adolescents' past academic grade was the most powerful predictor of adolescents' current academic achievement. Second, a sense of indebtedness felt towards the parents increased adolescents' achievement motivation, which increased their studying time and which in turn positively affected their academic achievement. Third, adolescents' respect for their parents increased their efficacy for self-regulated learning, which had a positive effect on their academic achievement. Fourth, parental social support increased adolescents' efficacy for self-regulated learning and parental achievement pressure increased adolescents' achievement motivation. Fifth, parental expectation had positive influence on adolescents' academic achievement. Sixth, efficacy for self-regulated learning had direct positive influence on academic achievement. These results indicate that the past achievement is the most important predictor of adolescents' current academic achievement and parent-child relationship and efficacy for self-regulated learning are also important variables that influence adolescents' achievement.
