  • This article examines the cases of archive development by research institutions for overseas Korean studies from the perspective of documenting the locality and explores development plans. The study investigates the impact of the solidarity between overseas Korean studies institutions and Korea-related communities in the region on the expansion of archives and the practice of locality documentation, using the case of the Korean War Archive Collection at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Library. For this, it reexamines the implications of locality and locality documentation. In addition, it discusses the methods of Korean studies locality documentation emerging abroad, such as the locality where the two geographical areas of Korea and Hawaii are fused. Since 2023, the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Library has been forming a network with the Korean War Veterans Association Hawaii Chapter 1 (KWVA) to collect and archive materials related to the Korean War. This is a case where the relationship between the archivists and the donor community has been developed to practice documenting the locality regarding Korean studies abroad. It proposes locality documentation as a way to expand archives in overseas Korean studies institutions that inevitably rely on the collection of records and discusses the importance of solidarity with Korea-related local communities. Finally, it shares the role of the record management subject and the implications found through the case.

  • This study focused on the 'Special Korean Collection' at the University of Hawaii's Hamilton Library, to examine the actual construction of Korean academic materials. The collection includes rare books by Marshall Pihl and Korean academic materials collected by 'the Korea Center'. And the following points were reviewed. First, what is the actual status of Korean academic data? Second, what is the field of study and what is the value of the material? Furthermore, this research sought to shed light on the Korean studies of early Korean emigrants. This includes not only the Americas but also Northeast Asia, Russia and Central Asia. There is a lack of comprehensive review of these materials at present. As a result, despite they are important research material, it is assumed that researchers have failed to grasp the academic, literary, cultural and artistic data of contemporary Korean emigrants. So the study also provided an understanding and future direction of the Korean collection.

  • In schools and corporate buildings, public WiFi Access Points are installed on the ceilings of hallways. In the case of an architectural structure in which a WiFi signal enters through a steel door made of a material with high signal attenuation, Internet connection is frequently cut off or fails when the door is closed. To solve this problem, our research implements an economical and portable WiFi extender using a Raspberry Pi and an auxiliary battery. Commercially available WiFi extenders have limitations in the location where the power plug is located, and WiFi extension using the WiFi hotspot function of an Android smartphone is possible only in some high-end models. However, because the proposed device can be installed at the position where the Wi-Fi reception signal is the best inside the door, the WiFi range can be extended while minimizing the possibility of damage to the original signal. Experimental results show that it is possible to eliminate the shadows of radio waves and to provide Internet services in the office when the door is closed, to the extent that web browsing and real-time video streaming for 720p are possible.

  • Due to Covid-19, international programs at the universities in the US have been temporarily on hold (or terminated). To recover from the great damage that the pandemic has brought to us, we have made our transition to provide international education via online. University of Hawaii - West Oahu has been actively coping with the impact from pandemic, and would like to propose unconventional methods of international programs to the fellow universities in Korea.

  • The relationship between balance and ankle muscle characteristics (strength and flexibility) may be important to identify those at an increased risk of falling and to develop fall-prevention training programs. The association between ankle muscle characteristics (strength and flexibility) and balance has not previously been studied. The purpose of this study assessed the relationship between ankle muscle characteristics and balance. Sixteen healthy participants volunteered to participate in the study. Dynamic balance measured using Y-balance kit. Ankle muscle characteristics (strength and flexibility) measured using hand-held dynamometer and goniometry. The results indicated a positive correlation between ankle invertor muscle strength and Y-balance test performance. Clinicians should consider ankle muscle strength during therapeutic interventions to improve dynamic balance.
