  • The composite metal deck plate system has been widely used for office structures. Recently, however, the flat deck plate has been developed to apply the composite slab system to residential structures. Reduction in construction cost and time can be expected by using expanded metal instead of wire mesh as crack control reinforcements. This study proposed a composite slab system composed of a new-shaped steel deck plate and expanded metal. Twelve specimens were tested to evaluate the structural performance of the new composite slab system. The test results were summarized mainly in terms of maximum load carrying capacity and failure behaviors of each specimen.

  • Traditional external post-tensioning method using either steel bars or tendons is commonly used as a retrofitting method for steel composite bridges. However, the method has some disadvantages such as stress concentration at anchorages and inefficient load-carrying capability of live loads. Multi-stepwise prestressing method using thermal expanded coverplate is a newly proposed prestressing method, which was originally developed for prestressing steel structures. A new retrofitting method for steel girder bridges founded on a simple concept of thermal expansion and contraction of cover plate, the method is a hybrid of and combines the advantages of external post-tensioning and thermal prestressing. In this paper, basic concepts of the method are presented and an illustrative experiment is introduced. From actual experimental data, the thermal prestressing effect was substantiated and the FEM approach for its analysis was verified. The retrofitting effects ofa single-span bridge were analyzed and the feasibility of the developed method was examined.

  • Steel braced frames are commonly used because braced frames are one of the most economical and efficient seismic resisting systems. However, research into the behavior of multi-story X-braced frame systems with mid-span gusset plates, as used in practice, is limited. As a result, their seismic performance and the influence of connection design on this performance are not well understood. Detailed nonlinear computer analyses of the frame were performed prior to building the test specimens and were used to aid the design and to predict the system performance. These analyses suggested significantly different behavior for the midspan gusset plate than that noted for the corner gusset plate connections. This paper summarizes the results of a full scale, 2-story braced frame analysis and test on concentrically braced frames.

  • A steel wire-integrated deck plate that welds integrated triangle truss steel wires on a galvanized steel sheet is developed to reduce construction costs of a slab or formwork such as shores and supports, and it is already widely applied in many construction fields. This study selected upper and lower steel wires, lattice steel wires, span, and cutting methods of ends as variables, and conducted an experimental test by manufacturing a total of 32 full scale test bodies. According to the result, changes in final destruction types of the test bodies and cutting methods of ends didn't affect structural performance of test bodies, and for a 3.2m-span test body, there was no big problems in using ${\Phi}4.5$ of lattice steel wires.

  • A steel wire-integrated deck plate that welds integrated triangle truss steel wires on a galvanized steel sheet is developed to reduce construction costs of slabs or formworks such as shores and supports, and it is already widely applied in many construction fields. In this research, experimental tests for 14 full scale specimens, which are in the same field conditions, are conducted on several parameters such as the diameter of top, bottom and lattice steel wire, cutting methods of ends. According to the result, changes in final destruction types of the test bodies and cutting methods of ends didn't affect structural performance of test specimens, and for a 4.0m-span test specimen, there was no big problems in using bottom bar D7 or D8.

  • We have fabricated nanodot arrays by using phase separated (PS- b- PMMA) diblock copolymer film and anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane as templates with hexagonal arrays of cylindrical microdomains perpendicular to the substrate. Pulsed laser deposition technique was used to deposit various kinds of materials including Ag, Ni, ZnO, Si:Er, and Co/Pt onto Si substrates. The size and separation of nanodots correspond to those of the templates used, The density of nanodots was estimated to be $6{\times}10^{11}/cm^2$ and $1{\times}10^{10}/cm^2$ when the diblock copolymer and AAO were used, respectively. In particular, the optical properties of ZnO and Si: Er nanodot arrays were investigated and the strong photoluminescence at 380 nm and $1.54{\mu}m$ was observed from ZnO and Si:Er nanodot arrays, respectively.

  • A plate type supporting structure of a tube bundle in axial flow generates a certain band of a high frequency periodic excitation of a vortex shedding and/or a flow separation due to sharp edge of the plate thickness and a severe pressure drop due to a cross-sectional area of the supports. With a design consideration of the low vibration and a small flow resistance, the analysis method is uniquely confined to an experimental approach because a complex geometry of a cylindrical tube bundle and/or physical phenomena related to the fluid-structure interaction of tube bundle in a flow impede a theoretical or a numerical approach. A 5x5 cylindrical tube bundle with 5 supports which were discretely located along the bundle's axis was tested in the FIVPET hydraulic test loop for a design evaluation and an analysis perspectives. A high frequency flow-induced vibration of the supporting structures of the cylindrical tube bundle was measured at a outer surface of a supporting structure through a transparent flow housing by the laser dopper vibrometer. Pressure drop in-between three measurement distances was measured by the differential pressure transmitter. High frequency vibration and pressure drop fairly depends on the geometric design of supporting structure. So, these two parameters would be used as a qualitative design variables for design evaluation and analysis.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural capacity of an encased(slim-floor) composite beam, which is a wider plate under bottom flange of H-beam with web openings. Five simple full-scale bending tests were conducted on the encased(slim-floor) composite beams at varying steel beam heights (250mm and 300mm), positions of web openings, and loading conditions. The test results revealed that the web-open encased composite beam had sufficient composite action, without any additional shear connection devices, because of the inherent shear-bond effects between the steel beam and the concrete, and a stable structural performance without web-opening reinforcements.

  • In the construction of end-plate connections, the end-plate is welded to the end of the beam in a factory and fastened by bolts in the field. This connection is widely used in advanced countries such as European countries and the U.S. Its design and connection details are prescribed in Eurocode 3, AISC LRFD, and FEMA 350. In Korea, the standards for seismic design in KBC 2005 have been reinforced based on IBC 2000 in the U.S., and it is expected that the connection details in the U.S. will be adopted for the establishment of beam-to-column design standards. In the U.S. thick end-plates are used for the connections to prevent beam rupture. The use of the connections in Korea, however, may lead toover-design. In this experimental study, the design standards for the end-plate connections provided by FEMA-350 were analyzed and structural tests for six specimens were conducted with the variables being the shim plate and the connection shape, to provide the best specifications for connections with plastic deformation in the end-plate for use in Korea.

  • The object of this paper is to determine appropriateness for use of high-strength tensile bar as a tension web member. The gap K-joint of tensile bar types were compared with gap K-joint of square hollow section (SHS) types. For the same width-to-thickness ratio ($2{\gamma}=33.3$ ), tests were performed on four specimens of the SHS type and eight specimens of the tensile bar type. The comparison of capacity with the experimental results showed a capacity of the SHS type joint to be higher than that of the tensile bartype joint for the same brace-to-chord width ratio. Moreover, the capacity of the SHS type joints increased proportionally to the width ratio ${\beta}$), while tensile bar type joints increased as the tension width ratio (${\beta}2$). In failure mode, SHS-type specimens showed local buckling of the compression brace and plastic failure was observed between the tension brace and chord face, and with the tensile bar type specimens there appeared punching shear failure of the chord face at the toe of the connection plate. It is, therefore, concluded that width-to-thickness ratio should be lower than that of the hollow-section type and the relation between tension and compression width ratio should be considered.
