  • As the demand on long span structures increases more in recent years, the excessive deflection, in addition to the ultimate strength, in horizontal members becomes a very important issue. For this reason, as an alternative method to effectively solve the deflection problems, the application of post-tensioned structural system with unbonded tendon increases gradually. However, most of the existing researches on post-tensioned members with unbonded tendons (UPT) focused on the ultimate flexural strength, which would be impossible or improper to check serviceability such as deflections. Therefore, this study aims at proposing a stress prediction model for unbonded tendons that is applicable to the behavior of UPT members from the very initial loading stages, post-cracking states, and service to ultimate conditions. The applicability and accuracy of the proposed model were also evaluated comparing to the existing test results from literature. Based on such comparison results, it was verified that the proposed model provided very good predictions on tendon stresses of UPT members at various loading stages regardless their different characteristics; wide range of reinforcement index, different loading patterns, and etc. The proposed model especially well considered the effect of various loading types on stress increases of unbonded tendons, and it was also very suitable to apply on the over-reinforced members that easily happened during strengthening/repairing work.

  • This paper is to investigate about a new technique (Bow system) which is to develop the disadvantages of the external post-tensioned method. The purpose of this paper is to analyze about the prestress loss when the loads apply along the long term and to improve the capacity of the members strengthened by Bow system. The variables in the test program are the span/depth ratio, the amount of tendon area. And the test was carried out to confirm the long term behaviour. It is shown that can apply the current code in the design, and have no the structural problems about the prestress loss.

  • This study analyzes the effects of the curvature friction coefficient, the wobble friction coefficient, and the increased strength of concrete, reinforced tendon on optimum de signs by using the optimum-design program, to minimize the cost of a PSC box girder bridge using the full staging method. The objective of this study is to find a proper tendon for the friction coefficient, and thereafter, to indicate the direction of the study development about tendons and to indicate the direction of a study on the increased strength of used materials. This program used the SUMT procedure and Kavlie's extended-penalty function to allow infeasible design points in the process. Powel's direct method was used in searching design points, and the gradient approximate method was used to reduce the design hours.

  • Despite many advantages of FRP materials, such as corrosion resistance, their linear elastic behavior up to rupture is likely to result in a lack of ductility. This paper discusses ductility improvement methods for prestressed concrete beams using FRP tendons. The methods were evaluated thorough extensive analytical and experimental investigations. The methods include optimization of sectional ductility through proper reinforcement, concrete confinement, concrete reinforcement with fibers, and prestressing with unbonded tendons.

  • To ensure the serviceability requirements of PSC composite girder bridges, it is essential to predict the stresses and deformations of the structure under service load conditions. Stresses and deformations vary continuously with time due to the effects of creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. The importance of these time-dependent effects is much more pronounced in precast prestressed concrete structures built in stages than in those constructed in one operation. In this paper, time-dependent analyses for PSC composite bridges using 30m standard girders have been conducted considering with the variation of the times of introducing initial prestressing forces and casting concrete. A computer program has been developed for the time-dependent analysis of simple or continuous PSC composite girders and parametric studies are conducted. Based on the numerical results, it is investigated the long-term behaviors of PSC composite girder bridges and discussed the limitations of the current codes for the prestress loss.

  • Prestressed concrete (PSC) bridges are vulnerable to corrosion and fracture of tendons, and in particular, structures using the internal post-tensioned with grouted system have difficulties in maintenance due to limitations of inspection. In this study, the actual behavior of PSC I girder bridge was analyzed according to tendon damage. The target PSC I girder bridge, an decommissioned highway bridge of upper and lower bridges, had the service period of 33 years and 20 years, respectively. Deflection and concrete strain were measured according to the location of damaged tendon and loading method. Regardless of the age of the bridge, its structural performance decreased when the damaged tendon was closer to the center of the girder. The change in behavior increased as the truck load approached to the girder where the tendon cut. If the load was applied to the adjacent girder where the tendon was cut, the structural performance was likely to be maintained due to the influence of the entire structural system. The change in deflection was difficult to observe visually, while the concrete strain exceeded the cracking strain. Therefore, it is recommended that future monitoring and inspection of PSC I girder bridges should focus on concrete strain or cracking.

  • CFRP tendons have been attempted in concrete structures as a substitute for steel tendons considering their many advantages such as the corrosion-resistance, light weight etc. However, the elastic behavior up to failure is likely to result in ductility problems. To overcome such problems, prestress concrete beams with partially bonded tendons have been developed and suggested. In this new system, the un-bonded part near the mid-span contributes to the improvement of ductility. And the bonded parts at both ends play a role as a safe anchorage. According to the previous research on the static behavior, the suggested method has demonstrated enough ductility and strength. However it is essential to verify the long-term safety for repetitive fatigue loads under service states. For this purpose, flexural fatigue loading tests were carried out in this research. This paper includes an experimental investigation on the static load-carrying capacities of the beams with or without fatigue tests. The results showed that the beams prestressed with partially bonded CFRP tendons possessed good fatigue capacity under the constant cyclic loads.

  • This study deals with literature review, developing a predicting equation for the ultimate stress of prestressing (PS) CFRP, and experimental test with the parameters affecting the ultimate stress of prestressing CFRF in prestressed concrete beams strengthened by external prestressing. The ACI (American Concrete Institute) predicting equation for the ultimate stress of unbonded prestressing CFRP is analyzed to develop a new integrated predicting equation. The proposed predicting equation takes rationally the effect of internal PS steel into consideration as a function of prestressing tendon depth to neutral depth ratio. In the experimental study, prestressed concrete beams strengthened using external prestressing CFRP are tested with the test parameters having a large effect on the ultimate stress of prestressing CFRP. The test parameters includes infernal prestressing steel and external prestressing CFRP tendon reinforcement ratios, and span to depth ratio. The test results are analyzed to confirm the rationality and applicability of the proposed equation for predicting the ultimate stress of external prestressing CFRP.
