  • We suggest a method that vectorially composes 3-component earthquake records in the frequency domain, to reduce the uncertainties in the analysis of the Fourier amplitude spectrum. The use of the Fourier amplitude spectrum composed from 3 components has two advantages. First, it provides a more accurate estimate of seismic moment by eliminating the vector-partition term that appears in individual component. Second, it provides more accurate estimates of seismic moment, corner frequency, high-frequency decay constant($χ$) .etc., by enhancing the shape of the Fourier amplitude spectrum. The latter is especially useful in the analysis of small earthquakes with low signal-to-noise ratios.

  • The process of the nonlinear shallow water wave transformation in a basin of a constant depth is studied. Characteristics of the first breaking of the wave are analyzed in details. The Fourier spectrum and steepness of the nonlinear wave are calculated. It is shown that the spectral amplitudes can be expressed using the wave front steepness, which allows the practical estimations.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for detecting defects in thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) cell images is presented. TFT-LCD cell images typically contain periodic cell patterns that make it difficult to detect defects. We propose an efficient and powerful algorithm for eliminating the cell patterns using magnitude spectrum analysis. The first step was to obtain a spectrum for a cell image using the Fourier transform while eliminating larger coefficients using an adaptive filter. Next, an image without the cell pattern was obtained by using the inverse Fourier transform. Finally, the defect pixels were detected using the STD algorithm. The validity of the proposed method was investigated using real TFT-LCD cell images. The experimental results indicate that the proposed technique is extremely effective for detecting defects in TFT-LCD cell images.

  • In various fields of basic science and engineering, in order to present signals and systems exactly and acquire useful information from spatial and timely changes, many researches have been processed. In these methods, the Fourier transform which represents signal as the combination of the frequency component has been applied to the most fields. But as transform not to consider time information, the Fourier transform has its limitations of application. To overcome this problem, a variety of methods including the wavelet transform have been proposed. As transform to represent signal by using the changing window, according to scale parameter in time-scale domain, the wavelet transform is capable of multiresolution analysis and defines various functions according to the application environments. In this paper, to detect features of signal we analyzed wavelet the spectrum by using the basis function of the fourier transform.

  • A new method to realize 3-dimensional object pattern recognition system using Fourier-based feature extractor has been proposed. The procedure to obtain the invariant feature vector is as follows ; A closed surface is generated by tracing the surface of object using the 3-dimensional polar coordinate. The centroidal distances between object's geometrical center and each closed surface points are calculated. The distance vector is translation invariant. The distance vector is normalized, so the result is scale invariant. The Fourier spectrum of each normalized distance vector is calculated, and the spectrum is rotation invariant. The Fourier-based feature generating from above procedure completely eliminates the effect of variations in translation, scale, and rotation of 3-dimensional object with closed-surface. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a high accuracy.

  • In this paper, it is suggested that the technology sound measurement which is to search the inferiority of the plate during the pressing. We evaluate whether there is a inferiority by analysing and comparing the satisfactory and inferior plate with the method of a spectrum analysis by measuring the sound which is emitted during pressing. We designed the analysis algorithm to detect inferior plate throughout comparison of measured sound data using FFT, DFT and DASYLab S/W. In addition to these, we suggest the way to compare both inferior and satisfactory signal statistically.

  • The Fourier transform spectra of a grating have been employed to determine the refractive index of a simple lens. The shearing interferometric technique is used for collimation testing of the expanded laser beam and for determining the exact focal plane. The slit attached to micro X-Y translator has been used to measure the distance between two sucessive diffraction orders in the back focal plane of the test lens. The experimental equipment is described and results are presented.

  • This paper proposes an effective tempo feature extraction method for music information retrieval. The tempo information is modeled by the narrow-band temporal modulation components, which are decomposed into a modulation spectrum via joint frequency analysis. In implementation, the tempo feature is directly extracted from the modified discrete cosine transform coefficients, which is the output of partial MP3(MPEG 1 Layer 3) decoder. Then, different features are extracted from the amplitudes of modulation spectrum and applied to different music information retrieval tasks. The logarithmic scale modulation frequency coefficients are employed in automatic music emotion classification and music genre classification. The classification precision in both systems is improved significantly. The bit vectors derived from adaptive modulation spectrum is used in audio fingerprinting task That is proved to be able to achieve high robustness in this application. The experimental results in these tasks validate the effectiveness of the proposed tempo feature.

  • In this paper, a new speech endpoint detection method in noisy environments for moving robot platforms is proposed. In the conventional method, the endpoint of speech is obtained by applying an edge detection filter that finds abrupt changes in the feature domain. However, since the feature of the frame energy is unstable in such noisy environments, it is difficult to accurately find the endpoint of speech. Therefore, a novel feature extraction method based on the twice-iterated fast fourier transform (TIFFT) and statistical models of speech is proposed. The proposed feature extraction method was applied to an edge detection filter for effective detection of the endpoint of speech. Representative experiments claim that there was a substantial improvement over the conventional method.
