  • In the design procedure of the cooling tower the form-finding of the shell is the most important process, because the shape of the shell determines the sensitivity of dynamic behaviour of the whole tower against wind excitation. In engineering practice, geometric parameters of the shell are generally determined based on natural frequency analysis. 32 cooling tower shell geometries were selected through variation of the geometric parameters of an existing cooling tower shell. They were evaluated based on the first natural frequency. From the result three representative cooling towers are selected for the analysis of the structural behaviour by means of linear FE-method. As a result, a hyperbolic rotational shell with the small radius overall will yield the shell geometry with a higher first natural frequency and thus a wind-insensitive structure.

  • This study was conducted to provide reference data for designing an alarm system that can help prevent the overturning of a container crane under wind load. Two methods, namely, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis and windtunnel test, were adopted in this investigation. To evaluate the effect of wind load on the stability of the crane, a 50-ton-class container crane that is widely used in container terminals was adopted as the analysis model and 19 values were considered as design parameters for wind direction. First, the wind-tunnel test for the reduced-scale container crane model was performed according to the wind direction by using an Eiffel type atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel. Next, the FSI analysis for the real-scale container crane was conducted using ANSYS and CFX. Then, the uplift force determined from the FSI analysis was compared with that determined from the wind-tunnel test. Finally, a formula to compensate for the difference between the results of the FSI analysis and the wind-tunnel test was proposed.

  • In this paper, 2D simple analyses were performed in order to predict the large torsional oscillations in a suspension bridge based on Makenna and Tuama model(2001). The existing model(Makenna and Tuama, 2001) has shown unrealistic results as the wind speed increases and frequency decreases. Furthermore, resonance could not be simulated by the existing model. Therefore, in this study, new model was proposed with a consideration of the torsional resistance. The vertical and rotational behaviors of the deck in the suspension bridge were analyzed. Analysis results showed that at first vertical oscillations were observed and it was gradually transformed to the rotation oscillations. With the consideration of the torsional resistance, it was shown that vertical behavior were stabilized as time passed. However, the rotational behavior was not stabilized and was kept until the end of analysis. Beat periods decreased while the wind speed increased. The resonance of the rotational mode was dependent to the rotational resistance. Obtained results could be applied for the design of the suspension bridge under the wind load.

  • With more than 70% of the country consisting of mountains, Korea has large and small mountains, and hills located in the inner cities. Therefore, Korea's architectural structure laws stipulate that an increase in wind speed due to the influence of terrain should be considered in the design of wind loads of buildings. But if more than two mountains are located around the building or if the boundaries of the land surface are not clear when calculating topographic factors of wind speed, the designer has subjectively selected the coverage of the topographic factors of wind speed or the surface. This may lead to unscientific design of wind loads. This study attempts to analyze topographic factors of wind speed by using a 1:5000 topographic map with relatively high location accuracy and thereby to reflect changes due to the topographic characteristics and influence at the point where the building is located. By also selecting terrain surfaces and vertexes through Arc GIS and presenting a scientific approach to determine the range of topographic factors of wind speed, this study is expected to make a contribution for more rational and cost-effective wind-resistant design of buildings.

  • In this paper, the analytical method to derive wind fragility for urban street tree in Korea was shown. Monte Carlo Simulation method was used to determine the probability of failure for urban street tree. This probability result was used to determine wind fragility parameters for four types of tree based on the study of street tree species in urban area in Daegu, Korea. Wind fragility for street tree was presented in terms of median capacity and standard deviation of the natural logarithm of the capacity. Results showed that the dominant factor affecting the probability of failure of tree under wind load was their diameter. Moreover, amongst the four types of tree chosen, the tree with height 7m and diameter 35cm had the lowest probability of failure under wind loading, whereas the tree with height 8m and diameter 30cm could resist the least wind loading. The median failure wind speed for urban street tree with height 7m were 43.8m/s and 50.6m/s for diameter 30cm and 35cm, respectively. Also, for tree with height 8m, their median failure wind speeds were 38.7m/s and 45.4m/s for tree with diameter 30cm and 35cm, respectively.

  • This study analyzed the fluid state around a container crone according to a wind direction when a wind load was applied to a container crone. The container crane for this research is a model of a 50-ton class used broadly in the current ports. The dimension of an external fluid field set up diameter, 300m, height, 200m. This study considered the change of a wind velocity according to an altitude in a criterion of a wind velocity, 50m/s, applying a power series law. An incident angle applied to an interval of 30 degrees in $0^{\circ}{\sim}180^{\circ}$ and this study carried out a computation fluid dynamics using a CFX-10. In this study, we indicate the wind pressure according to the height and section figure of each member. In addition, we suggest the wind pressure accordint to a wind direction. And we will analyze the structure stability of a container crone from the fluid-ductile analysis in the next study.

  • Well-designed bolted connections can exhibit excellent ductile behavior through bearing mechanism until the occurrence of bolt shear rupture. The ultimate strength analysis of eccentric bolted connections is an economical and mechanistic approach which uses such ductility. However, the bolt load-deformation relationship, which forms basis of the current practice, is based on very limited combinations of bolt and steel materials. The primary objective of this study was to establish the general bolt force-deformation relationship based on systematic single-bolt bearing connection tests. The test results showed that the projected area of the bolt hole and the strength and thickness of the plate to be connected are the main factors affecting the force-deformation relationship. The results of this study can be used for the instantaneous center of rotation method (ICRM) to achieve more accurate analysis and economical design of a variety of group-bolted connections subjected to eccentric shear.

  • In the flat-plate slab design of the KCI and ACI building code, the punching shear strength of connections with shear reinforcement can increase one and half times to that of connections without shear reinforcement. And the ACI-ASCE committee 352 recommendations propose limiting the direct shear ratio $V_g$/$V_c$ on interior connections to 0.4 to insure adequate drift capacity. In this study, four interior column-slab connections were tested to look into the punching shear strength and the lateral displacement capacity of the flat-plate slab with and without shear reinforcement under cyclic lateral loading. Based on the test results, it is found that the provision about punching shear strength in the codes may appropriate for the gravity loading only whereas it is unconservative for the lateral loading and that the limit of ACI-ASCE committee 352 appears conservative.

  • When dynamic loads such as mechanical load, wind load, and seismic load, which causing a vibration, acts on the body of the 3-D framework resting on soil foundation, it is required to consider the dynamic behavior of soil-space framework interation system. Thus, this study presents the 3-dimensional soil-interaction system analyzed by finite element method using 4-node plate elements with flexibility, 2-node beam elements, and 8-node brick elements for the purpose of idealizing an actual structure into a geometric shape. The objective of this study is the formulation of the equation for a dynamic motion and the development of the finite element program which can analyze the dynamic behavior of soil-space framework interaction system.
