A graphene/waterborne polyurethane (WPU) nano composite was prepared by in-situ polymerization of PU and graphene having isocyanate (iGO) group in order to improve physicochemical/electrical characteristics. The properties of the graphene/WPU nanocomposite can effectively be enhanced as compared pristine WPU; up to 57% of tensile strength and $10^2$ fold of electrical conductivity with introduction of 2 wt% graphene. In addition, mechanical/electrical properties of the graphene/WPU nanocompsite were higher than those of graphene/WPU composite prepared by a simple physical blend method. It might attribute to homogeneous dispersion of iGO in the WPU matrix via covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds between WPU and iGO from the results of morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Dental properties of polymer composite loaded with hybrid filler of barium silicate (BaSi) and hydroxyapatite, which is a principal component of human bone material, were investigated. A visible light system was utilized to activate the acrylic resin matrix of the composite. Based on the experimental results, it was found that mechanical strength of the composite was consistently increased with an increase of BaSi content in the hybrid filler. And those value rose above the dental specification enough to apply for dental materials. However, abrasion resistance was slightly decreased with increasing BaSi content in the filler. Depth of cure value was 6 to 9 mm applicable for dental restoration irrelevant to hybrid filler composition. On the other hand, there was no strict trend between filler composition and polymerization shrinkage as well as degree of conversion.
To increase mechanical properties of the hydroxyapatite/poly (L-lactide) (HA/PLLA) composite which was a potential bone substitute material, HA was modified by the surface grafting with D-lactide (DLA) and the formation of stereocomplexes between components was introduced. The composite films were prepared by the solvent-nonsolvent technique to minimize the precipitation of HA during drying. The structure and properties of the composites were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimeter, and scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical property measurements. TGA results showed that the amount of DLA grafted on the HA surfaces (g-HA) was 6 wt%. The obtained g-HA exhibited better dispersity in an organic solvent than HA. The formation of stereocomplexes in the composites was confirmed by the change in melting temperature. The mechanical properties of g-HA/PLLA composites were increased, compared to the HA/PLLA composites.
The objective of this study is to develop polymer-impregnated concrete(PIC), which is a newly developed composite material made by impregnating polymer impregnanls into hardened normal concrete, and to develop analytical techniques for its proper applications. Crystalline methyl methacrylate(MMA) is chosen as a monomer of polymer impregnants. The corrlpositions of polymer impregnants and producing processes are developed by analyzing the effects of penetration, polymerization, thermal safety, and strengthening characteristics. On t he basis of experimental results of this study, various strength characteristics and stress strain constitutive relations are formulated in terms of the compressive strength of normal concrete and the polymer loadings, which can be applied for analysis and design of PIC members. In order to provide a model for fracture analysis of flexural members, fracture toughness, fracture energy, critical crack width, and tension softening relations near crack tip are also formulated in terms of member depth, initial notch depth, and the flexural strength of normal concrete. The structural analysis procedure and the finite element computer program developed in the study are applicable to evaluate elastic behavior, ultimate strength, and tension softening behavior of MMA type PIC structural members subject to various loading conditions. The accuracy and effectiveness of the developed computer program is examined by comparing the anal ytical results with the experimental results. Therefore, it is concluded that the developed structural analysis procedure and the finite element computer program are applicable to analysis and design of in-situ and precast PIC structural members.
The cesium hydrogen sulfate (CsHSO$_4$) crystal is a superprotonic conductor above 140$^{\circ}C$ and possesses protonic conductivity three to low orders of magnitude higher than that at room temperature. Recently, the possibility of it as an electrolyte material for fuel cell system draws much attention. However, its plasticity and absorption of humidity place a limitation on its application. In this study, composites consisting of CsHSO$_4$ and polyacrylonitrile were prepared, and their phase transition properties and the ionic conductivities were evaluated. When the content of CsHSO$_4$ was about 80 vol%, a mechanically strong film with the protonic conductivity of 1${\times}$10$\^$-3/ Scm$\^$-1/ were made.
The addition of montmorillonite (MMT) in the UV curable polyurethane diacrylate based resins was investigated to fabricate nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties and water sorption behavior using different photoinitiator systems. As a result, it was observed that 1 wt% of clay loading fairly improved tensile resistance and water uptake behavior. It can be also confirmed that dual photoinitiator system consisted of benzyldimethyl ketal and bisacyl phosphine oxide exhibited enhanced energy absorption band 340~450 nm even with 3 wt% of MMT concentration, which may affect the curing behavior of nanocomposite especially in our UV lamp system.
It is found that the commercialization of nylon 66/Cloisite 93A nanocomposite by applying melt intercalation is possible in the composite production facilities of the pilot scale which has been generalized today. The strength and modulus under tensile and flexural stress have been improved with the introduction of Cloisite 93A in nylon 66. Furthermore, it is found through the analysis of morphologic and crystallization behavior that the elements such as content of Cloisite 93A, viscosity of nylon 66 and the crystallization behavior have significantly influences on the characteristics of nanocomposite.

Recently, polymer-clay hybrid materials have received considerable attention from both a fundamental research and application point of view. This organ-inorganic hybrid, which contains a nanoscale dispersion of the layered silicates, is a material with greatly improved thermal and mechanical characteristics. Two classes of nanocomposites were synthesized using an unsaturated polyester resin as the matrix and sodium montmorillonite as well as an organically modified montmorillonite as the reinforcing agents. X -ray diffraction pattern of the composites showed that the interlayer spacing of the modified montmorillonite were exfoliated in polymer matrix. The mechanical properties also supported these findings, since in general, tensile strength, modulus with modified montmorillonite were higher than the corresponding properties of the composites with unmodified montmorillonite. Adding organically modified clay improved the tensile strength of unsaturated polyester by $22\%$ and the tensile modulus of unsaturated polyester was also improved by $34\%$.
Adsorption behavior and amount of phenolic resin followed silica (SiO2) formation onto silicon nitride(Si3N4) surface were investigated using electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) technique and with UV spectrometer, to fabricate Si3N4/SiC nano-composite based on reaction between SiO2 formed and phenolic resin absorbed onto Si3N4 particle. The amount of SiO2 formed and carbon from phenolic resin absorbed onto Si3N4 surface were calculated quantitatively to adjust the reaction between SiO2 and phenolic resin, resulting in no residual SiO2 and carbon. As a result, pre-heated tempeature for optimized reaction was below 25$0^{\circ}C$, in which there was no residual SiO2 and carbon.

PP/MMT nanocomposites having a various compositions were prepared by melt blending with a twin screw extruder. In this study, maleic anhydride-grafted PP (MAH-g-PP) was used as a compatibilizer in order to assist the exfoliation or hen in the pp matrix. from the results or x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurements for the nanocomposites, we confirmed that MMT was exfoliated. PPM nanocomposites have shown good flame retardancy by synergistic effect between MMT and flame retardant. The mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposites showed significant enhancement compared with those of neat PP, The excellent flame retardancy of the PP/MMT nanocomposites, UL94 V-0 value, was successfully obtained with reduced amount of the flame retardant.
