  • This research was carried out to establish the effective treatment condition and characteristic of wastewater from the electroplating plant of cold rolling mill by using microorganism. Alkaline wastewater and acidic heavy metal wastewater accounted for 64%, 30%, respectively, of the total wastewater. Highly concentrated thiocyanate was 53890 mg/L as COD and it was 53% of total COD, even though it was 0.03% of wastewater from the electroplating plant. When treating mixed wastewater with microorganism, it was easy to remove when SCN concentrations of mixed wastewater was 200 mg/L or less. While the treatment effect of COD-causing materials was low at the concentration of 400 mg/L or less, it implies that highly concentrated thiocyanate contains a large amount of slowly biodegradable organics. When treating with mixed wastewater, pH was 7.33 at the beginning, but after 8 hours it increased to 7.99. This is caused by ammonia which is generated when SCN of highly concentrated thiocyanate was degraded by microorganism.

  • Cyanidation has been used worldwide to recover gold from primary ore or concentrate. The use of cyanide is however becoming an emerging issue because of the toxic residue and wastewater made from the process. The cyanide-containing wastewater should be treated properly, obeying the environmental standard and regulations. In the present article, the domestic and international uses, regulations, and treatment technologies of cyanide in gold mining were investigated as a feasibility study to develop a cyanide treatment process as well as the cyanidation process. A biological cyanide treatment process to develop a zeroemission gold recovery and wastewater treatment process was also briefly introduced.

  • An advanced oxidation process catalyzed by iron ions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, the so-called Fenton's reaction, has been applied to the treatment of steam generator chemical cleaning waste containing highly concentrated iron(III)- ethyl-enediaminetetraaceticacid (Fe(III)-EDTA) of 70000 mg/L. The experiments for the degradation of Fe(III)-EDTA were carried out not only with a simulated waste, but also with the real one. The effect of pH and the amount of hydrogen peroxide added to the waste on the degradation was examined, and the results were discussed in several aspects. The optimal pH to maximize the degradation efficiency was dependent on the amount of hydrogen peroxide added to the waste. i.e., when the amount of hydrogen peroxide was different, maximum degradation efficiency was obtained at different pH's. The optimal amount of hydrogen peroxide relative to that of Fe(III)-EDTA was found to be 24.7 mol ($H_{2}O_{2}$)/mol (Fe(III)-EDTA) at pH around 9.

  • The study on the electrosorption of cobalt ions onto a porous activated carbon fiber (ACF) was performed to treat radioactive liquid wastes resulting from chemical or electrochemical decontamination and to regenerate the spent carbon electrode, Cyclic voltammetry was investigated on a rotating-disk electrode (RDE) to determine the region of potentials within which only double-layer charging should occur. The application of an electric potential increased the sorption of the cobalt ions. The adsorbed cobalt Ions could be released into the solution by reversing the appling potential, showing the reversibility of the process.
