  • In this research, the change of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of graphite/epoxy composite laminate under space environment was measured using fiber optic sensors. Two fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been adopted for the simultaneous measurement of thermal strain and temperature. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) conditions with high vacuum, ultraviolet and thermal cycling environments were simulated in a thermal vacuum chamber. As a pre-test, a FBG temperature sensor was calibrated and a FBG strain sensor was verified through the comparison with the electric strain gauge (ESG) attached on an aluminun specimen at high and low temperature respectively. The change of the CTE in a composite laminate exposed to space environment was measured for intervals of aging cycles in real time. As a whole, there was no abrupt change of the CTE after 1000 aging cycles. After aging, however, the CTE decreased a Little all over the test temperature range. These changes are caused by outgassing, moisture desorption, matrix cracking etc.

  • Guided waves can be used for the inspection of long range pipelines. Surface corrosion is often found as a major defect type in pipelines. The reciprocity relation is a well-established theorem by which one can simplify complicated mathematical expressions. The approach has been already applied to plate and half-space structures to obtain the closed-form solutions of scattered amplitude. However, results for the case of cylindrical structures have not been reported yet. In this paper, the scattering of torsional waves, which is widely used in commercial applications, is explored by the reciprocity theorem approach. Obtaining closed-form solutions of the amplitudes of propagating waves is much simplified by using the reciprocal relation. The scattered amplitudes for elliptical and rectangular defect shapes are calculated with respect to defect depth and width, at frequencies between 0 and 500 kHz. The amplitude shows the periodic result as a function of frequency. The derived closed-form solutions can play a significant role in quantitative signal interpretation.

  • One of the problems for practical use of fiber-reinforced plastics is the performance degradation by fatigue damage in the joints. The study is to develop a nondestructive technique for real-time evaluation of adhesively bonded composite-metal joints. From the prior study we confirmed that the bonding strength can be estimated from the correlation between the qualify of bonded parts and AUP's. We obtained a curve showing the correlation between the degree of fatigue damage and AUP's calculated from signals acquired during fatigue loading of single-lap and double-lap joints of CFRP and Al6061. The curve is an analogy to the one showing stiffness reduction ($E/E_o$) of polymer matrix composites by fatigue damage. From those facts, it is plausible to predict the degree of fatigue damage in real-time. Amplitude and AUP2 appeared to be optimal parameters to provide more reliable results for single-lap joints whereas Amplitude and AUP2 did for double-lap joints. It is recommended to select optimal parameters for different geometries in the application for real structures.

  • Laminate composites, especially Carbon fiber-reinforced composites are wide used in various industry such as aerospace and automotive industry due to their high specific strength and specific stiffness. However, the laminate composites has a big disadvantage that delamination occurs because the arrangement of the fibers is all arranged in the in-plane direction, which limits the field of application of the laminate composites. In this study, we first developed a laminate composites T-beam in which π-beam and flat plate were combined and optimized the design parameters through structural analysis and mechanical tests. Afterwards, 3D weave preform T-beam was developed by applying the same design parameters of laminate composites T-beams, and improved mechanical strength was achieved compared to laminated structures. These findings are expected to be applicable to existing laminated composite structures that require increased strength.

  • This paper presents the strength safety of a LPG cylinder, which is fabricated by a steel sheet forming and a welding technology. The strength safety of a cylinder is guaranteed by analyzing a stress distribution of a LPG cylinder structure using a finite element method. The FEM computed results indicate that the hydraulic test gas pressure of $31kg/cm^2$ generates a concentrated local stress near the upper round end plate, which exceeds the yield strength of a LPG cylinder. Thus, the current hydraulic test pressure may be rechecked and revised because this pressure increases the fatigue failure and decreases the lift of the pressure vessel. The normal operation and sealing gas pressures such as $9kg/cm^2\;and\;18.6kg/cm^2$ are relatively safe for a steel LPG cylinder.

  • Recently the necessity of developing the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for shallow foundation has been raised to implement to the domestic design codes related to geotechnical engineering since the limit state design is requested as international technical standard for the foundation of structures. In this study, applicability of LRFD for shallow foundation on weathered soils was investigated and resistance factor for this case was proposed. The quantitative analyses on the uncertainty and resistance bias for shallow foundation on weathered soil ground were performed by collecting the statistical data about domestic case studies for design and construction of shallow foundation. Reliability analyses for shallow foundation were first performed using FDA (First-order Design value Approach) method. Resistance factors were calibrated using the load factors obtained from the specifications of shallow foundations on weathered soil ground. The influence of the load factors developed in this study on the resistance factors were discussed by comparing with the resistance factor obtained from using AASHTO load factors.

  • This work compared the bright calibration of digital radiation with signal-to-noise ratio and basic spatial resolution according to multi frame to enable effective inspection of welding parts of structures at industrial sites. A total of 130 images were obtained by using a 75Se radiation source for flat weld test pieces and segmenting bright calibration and multi frame prior to shooting. The study confirms that the signal-to-noise ratio improves as the number of bright calibrations and the number of multi frame increases. The basic spatial resolution satisfied the baseline for both radiographic images. It was confirmed that the number of signal-to-noise ratio was similar by comparing images taken after installing lead shielding for scattering radiation. Although signal-to-noise ratio increases as multi frame increases, it is believed that good quality digital radiographs can be obtained if appropriate radiographic techniques are devised because exposure time of radiation affects workers' exposure and work efficiency.

  • Prediction of damage caused by low-velocity impact in laminated composite plate is an important problem faced by designers using composites. Not only the inplane stresses but also the interlaminar normal and shear stresses playa role in estimating the damage caused. But it is well known that the conventional approach based on the homogenization has the limit in description of damage. The work reported here is an effort in getting better predictions of dynamic behavior and damage in composite plate using DNS approach. In the DNS model, we discretize the composite plates through separate modeling of fiber and matrix for the local microscopic analysis. In the view of microscopic mechanics with DNS model, interlaminar stress behaviors in the inside of composite materials are investigated and compared with the results of the homogenized model which has been used in the conventional approach to impact analysis. Also the multiscale model based on DNS concept is developed in order to enhance the effectiveness of impact analysis, and we present the results of multiscale analysis considering micro and macro structures simultaneously.

  • In this study, we used finite element analysis to conduct a containment capability evaluation of a turbine case. When analyzing the impact behavior of structures subjected to impact loads, it is important to consider the strain rate, as it affects the increase in flow stress. Therefore, we applied three material models (Cowper-Symonds, Johnson-Cook, and Modified Johnson-Cook) for the impact analysis. To validate these material models, we performed an impact test on an aluminum 6061 plate. By comparing and analyzing the experimental and analytical results, we determined that the Modified Johnson-Cook material model exhibited the least error. As a result, we applied this material model to evaluate the containment capability of the turbine case. This evaluation involved determining the occurrence of penetration, as well as the stress and strain induced at the collision area due to the initial velocity of the blade.

  • The methods of design of mat foundation may be classified as the rigid method and the flexible method according to the assumptions used. In the rigid method, the mat is assumed to be infinitely rigid and the contact pressure is assumed planar distribution. However, the contact pressure is not planar but curved surface because the real mat is not rigid. Therefore, it is not precise to analyze the mat foundation using the rigid method, and so there is no choice but to accept an error. On the other hand, in the flexible method, the mat is considered as the plate on the elastic foundation. This elastic plate theory is for the infinite plate acting a concentrated load on the elastic foundation. However, the functions for the moment, shear, and the deflection by the flexible method are very complex, there are many difficulties for the designer to use them. Also, it is impossible to use the design aid figures as a substitute of the complex functions, because they do not cover the values at the critical sections for the moment and shear. Therefore, in this research, the simplified functions for the moment, shear, and the deflection are proposed by regression analysis for an designer to use easily the flexible method. The simplified functions are very accurate and very ease to use.
