Proximate composition of whole hemp seed, paste viscosity of whole hemp seed pellets, bulk density, color, compression force, water solubility and absorption index and bowl life of whole hemp seed flakes manufactured by extrusion process were determined to evaluate whole hemp seed as flake additive. Extrusion process conditions were 35% of moisture content and 90, 100 and 110$^{\circ}C$ of barrel temperature. Content of moisture content, crude protein, crude fat, crude ash from whole hemp seed were 5.67${\pm}$0.02%, 25.93${\pm}$0.16%, 28.21${\pm}$0.56% and 7.70${\pm}$0.08%, respectively. The pellets hemp seed at 100 or 110$^{\circ}C$ had higher paste viscosity as compared to those pellet at 90$^{\circ}C$. The bulk density values of all hemp seed flakes were between 0.24 to 0.43 g/mL, depending on the barrel temperatures. The hardness of flake increased with decreasing percentage of hemp seed in flakes. An increase in barrel temperature from 90$^{\circ}C$ to 110$^{\circ}C$ resulted in increase of WSI and decrease of WAI. The bowl life of hemp seed flakes was increased from 5.8 to 15.5 min with the decrease in percentage of hemp seed. The highest overall quality was showed in flake added with 20% of hemp seed.
Resistant starch (RS) content, paste viscosity, water solubility and absorption index, bulk density, color, compression force, and bowl life of Goami flakes manufactured by extrusion process were determined to evaluate Goami (high fiber rice) as a food material. Various extrusion process conditions included barrel temperature (90, 110, $130^{\circ}C$) and moisture content (50, 55%). RS content in the extruded pellet and defatted flake ranged from $8.00{\sim}8.56%$ and $6.57{\sim}9.53%$ respectively. RS content increased as moisture increased from 50% to 55%. Peak viscosity, trough viscosity, final viscosity, and setback viscosity of the extruded pellet and defatted flake decreased with steeping for 1 hr, and the breakdown viscosity significantly increased. The water solubility and absorption index increased in the flake compared to Goami and extruded pellet. The water solubility index of the extruded pellet was lower than that of Goami, while its water absorption index was higher than Goami. The bulk density of the flake ranged from $0.35{\sim}0.44$ g/mL. The bowl life of the flake was $12.4{\sim}19.4$ min, which was longer than commercial breakfast cereals on the market.

This study was conducted to investigate the potential of torrefied larch wood as a raw material of pellets. First of all, larch chip was torrefied at the temperatures of 230, 250 and $270^{\circ}C$ for 30, 50 and 70 min. Secondly, moisture content, moisture absorption, higher heating value and ash content of the torrefied chip were measured to examine the effects of torrefaction conditions on the fuel characteristics of larch. Thirdly, surfaces of the torrefied chip were observed by light microscope (LM), field emission scanning microscope (FE-SEM) and SEM-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDXS). With the increases of torrefied temperature and time, contents of lignin increased and those of hemicellulose reduced. Moisture content of torrefied larch chip was greatly lower than that of non-torrefied chip. Moisture absorption of the torrefied chip decreased as torrefaction temperature increased. As torrefaction temperature increased, higher heating value and ash content of larch chip increased. However, durability of torrefied-larch pellets was remarkably lower comparing to non-torrefied-larch pellets. When surface of larch chip was observed by LM and FE-SEM, surface color and cell wall of the chip was getting darker and more collapsed with the increases of torrefaction conditions. Through the analysis of SEM-EDXS, distribution and quantity of lignin existing on the surface of larch chip increased with the increases of torrefied conditions. In conclusion, $270^{\circ}C$/50 min might be an optimal condition for the torrefaction of larch with the aspect of fuel characteristics, but torrefaction condition of $230^{\circ}C$/30 min should be considered according to the durability of torrefied-larch pellets.
Recently, densified pellet fuel from wood biomass is widely used at North America and Europe as a regenerable and clean carbon neutral bioenergy. High-pressure compaction of sawdust of Hyunsasi-poplar (Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa) to form a densified fuel was studied. Calorific and elemental analysis were carried out to assess Hyunsasi-poplar clones as fuels. Hot-press process was adopted for compaction of sawdust and compaction was performed under temperature from 100 to 180$^{\circ}C$, at pressure of 250 to 1000 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and for 2.5 to 10 minutes. Densified fuels were evaluated by its oven-dry density and fines after 5-minute shaking test. The target density and fines of densified fuels were over 1.2 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and below 0.5%, respectively. When the press-temperature is over 160$^{\circ}C$, densified fuels with density eve. 1.2 g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and with fines below 0.5% can be produced. And the pressure over 750 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was effective for this production. It was found that the optimum press condition for preparation of densified fuel was 180$^{\circ}C$ -1000 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ minutes.
Porous pellets for immobilizing heavy metals were manufactured from coal tailings and iron oxide powder. Coal tailings was pulverized and mixed with iron oxide powder. The mixed powder was granulated into spherical pellets and roasted. Over $1100^{\circ}C$, residual coal in coal tailings reduced iron oxide to ZVI(Zero-Valent Iron). The pellets have 34.63% of porosity, 1.31 g/mL of bulk density, and 9.82.urn median pore diameter. The pellets were reacted with synthetic solutions containing each heavy metals: arsenic(V), copper(II), chrome(VI), and cadmium(II), respectively. On the test of immobilizing heavy metal, the pellets made at $1100^{\circ}C$ were superior to the other pellets made under $1000^{\circ}C$. Immobilizing over 99.9% of 10ppm heavy metal solutions required I hour for arsenic, 2 hours for chrome, and 4 hours for copper. However, immobilizing capacity of cadmium was inferior to that of the other metals and it was decreased in reversely proportion to initial concentration of the solutions.
Hydrogen is a clean and efficient energy source and is expected to take an important role in future energy demand. A possibly good route to produce hydrogen is by using biomass and organic wastes as a source through thermo-chemical conversion technology. In this study, pyrolysis of wood Pellet(Oregon pine) has been carried out in batch type fixed-bed reactor in $N_2$ atmosphere during 20 minutes to determine the optimum hydrogen generating conditions. At the influence of temperature, hydrogen yield was increased with increasing temperature. For the influence of Steam/Biomass Ratio(SBR), hydrogen yield was increased by steam addition at low temperature condition. However, effect of steam addition was insignificant over at SBR = 1. The hydrogen yield was increased with increasing SBR at high temperature condition. From result of $H_2$/CO and $H_2/CH_4$ ratio, dominant reaction was steam reforming in this experimental condition. The optimum condition for hydrogen production was determined as follows: $H_2$ yield = 38.3 vol.% (56.01 L/min kg) at $900^{\circ}C$, SBR=3.
We prepared the cylindrical $\gamma-alumina$ pellets of 5 mm in diameter and 10 mm in average length using amorphous alumina and pore generating agent. The pellets were immersed in an aqueous solution of the mixture of $Fe(NO_{3})_{3}{\cdot}9H_{2}O$ and $CH_{3}COOH$. They were then hydrothermally treated at $200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in autoclave, dried and calcined. For the application as an environmental catalyst, we investigated the decomposition characteristics of aniline and the initiation characteristics of $OH^{\cdot}$ conversion action in $O_{3}$ environment with or without the $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ supported y-alumina catalyst and $O_{3}$ molecule.
Biodegradable plastics were developed using biodegradable pellets made of corn stalk and rice husk and their safety as food packages and their biodegradability against light (ultraviolet (UV)), heat, and fungi were evaluated. Four kinds of 50-${\mu}m$ biodegradable plastics were produced by extruding the mixtures of the biodegradable pellets, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with different compositions. Developed biodegradable plastics were safe to be used as food packages. The initial tensile strength and percentage elongation of the plastics were similar to those of LDPE, but the values decreased with increased their exposure time to UV and heat. The fungal biodegradability of the biodegradable plastics was higher than that of LDPE. The biodegradability of the biodegradable plastics shows the potential for them to be used as sustainable food packages.
