  • In order to confirm the effects of economic growth and environmental improvement, this study analyzed the existence of environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) for SO2 emission, greenhouse gas emission, and waste generation in OECD countries. As a result of panel analysis, the shape of the EKC were different depending on environmental pollutants. SO2 generated peaks relatively early in economic growth, and the peak of greenhouse gas emissions was showed in higher income level. But both emissions showed the a complete inverted U-shaped curve decreasing after the peak. On the other hand, for waste, there was no environmental Kuznets curve that could confirm the peak. Therefore, this study confirmed that it is difficult to expect a voluntary reduction in all environmental pollutants, and additional global joint efforts are needed to pass the peak. In particular, since waste has a greater impact on population density and industrial structure than income level, additional policy efforts are needed to reduce generation and create a resource circulation system.

  • This study analyze Family gaps(the wage gap between mothers and non-mothers) across the wages distribution in Korea using 2008 Korean Labor and Income Panel Study. Analysis models include Heckman's two stage estimation to control women's labor participation selection and Quantile regression method to examine the effects of children at different points of the wage distribution. The result indicates that first, comparing non-mothers, mothers with one child suffer statistically significant hourly wage losses at 25th, 50th, and 75th distribution, however not significant effects are found at lowest(10th) and highest(90th) distribution. Second, comparing non-mothers, mothers with two more children suffer statistically significant hourly wage losses at all distribution. Family gap differs across the wage distribution and highest family gaps are found at 25th distribution. With these results, the author suggests universal family policies to support mothers' labor participation and the reconciliation of work and family.

  • This study purports to examine the potential effects of welfare attitudes of Korean people upon their political orientation. The 17th Korea Welfare Panel Data(KWPD) in 2022 are used for this purpose. Independent variable include sex, age, education, interest in politics, and employment status. Discriminant analysis show several results. First and foremost, pre-established discriminant function works well for classification of respondents' liberal vs conservative stance. Secondly, except gender and dummy variable for temporary employed, all independent variables contribute significantly for the classification at a given significance level. . Finally, welfare attitudes of respondents', measured by universalism vs selectivism and the attitudes upon increasing tax for welfare expenditures are found to be significant and relatively big impacts upon dependent variable, compard to other variables in the model. The nature of causal relationship between welfare attitudes and political orientation remains for further study.

  • This study investigated the sensory attributes and quality characteristics of Fuji apples based on market commodity price to provide data for quality index of Fuji apples. Samples were purchased from the Garak market (Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation) and divided into four groups depending on the price such as group A, B, C, D. There were no significant differences in their volume and weight among groups. In the soluble solid content and total free sugar, A and B group (high price) showed higher content than those of C and D (low price) group. And also, the A group and B, C, D group showed 386.29 mg% and 320.09~359.28 mg% in the total organic acid content, respectively. As an sensory evaluation results, A group and B group were evaluated higher score than those of C and D group in the uniformity of red color and glossiness of skin and unique apple sensory attributes using quantitative descriptive analysis. Consumer test showed similar to quantitative descriptive analysis results in the various sensory attributes. In the analysis results between quality characteristics and sensory attributes of Fuji apples, total acceptability was correlated positively with titratable acidity (r=0.58), soluble solid (r=0.89), soluble solid content/titratable acidity ratio (r=0.42), total free sugar (r=0.36) and total organic acid (r=0.38). Based on principal component analysis of apple's quality characteristics, apples were primary separated along the first principal component (pH, acidity, soluble solid content, total free sugar, organic acid), which accounted for 66.01% of total variance. In addition, principal component analysis of sensory evaluation revealed a total variance for the quantitative descriptive of 55. 65% and a total variance for the consumer test of 55.84%.

  • This study aims to analyze the effect of typhoons on pear production. Pears are typical fruits that are vulnerable to typhoon damages, so typhoons are negatively associated with pear productivity. However, relatively less pear damages by typhoons in the main pear production area, comparing to the average in Korea, have been reported. The main production area seems to adopt better agricultural techniques or practices to cope with natural disasters such as typhoons. Thus, this study tests the hypothesis that there are differences of production losses due to typhoons between the main pear production area and the rest using the stochastic frontier analysis. The main production area is defined by Location Quotient Index (LQI), and we found that LQI had a significant effect to decrease the productivity losses in the main production areas, which shows that those production areas alleviated the pear production loss due to typhoons.

  • This study organized data from 2000 to 2014 for 20 grid-connected countries in Europe and analyzed the determinants of carbon emissions through the panel GLS method considering the problem of heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation. At the same time, the effect of introducing ETS was considered by dividing the sample period as of 2005 when the European emission trading system was introduced. Carbon emissions from individual countries were used as dependent variables, and proportion of generation by each source, power self-sufficiency ratio of neighboring countries, power production from resource-holding countries, concentration of power sources, total energy consumption per capita in the industrial sector, tax of electricity, net electricity export per capita, and size of national territory per capita. According to the estimation results, the proportion of nuclear power and renewable energy generation, concentration of power sources, and size of the national territory area per capita had a negative (-) effect on carbon emissions both before and after 2005. On the other hand, the proportion of coal power generation, the power supply and demand rate of neighboring countries, the power production of resource-holding countries, and the total energy consumption per capita in the industrial sector were found to have a positive (+) effect on carbon emissions. In addition, the proportion of gas generation had a negative (-) effect on carbon emissions, and tax of electricity were found to have a positive (+) effect. However, all of these were only significant before 2005. It was found that net electricity export per capita had a negative (-) effect on carbon emissions only after 2005. The results of this study suggest macroscopic strategies to reduce carbon emissions to green growth, suggesting mid- to long-term power mix optimization measures considering the electricity trade market and their role.

  • The recent advances in multimedia signal coding and transmission technologies allow lots of users to watch videos on small LCD displays. In this paper, we briefly describe an intelligent display technique to provide small-display-viewers with comfortable experiences, and study the minimum image size tolerated and utility of displaying region of interest (ROI) only when needed. The study, with 111 participants, examines minimum image size to ensure viewers pleasant viewing experiences, and evaluates the degree of satisfaction when they are viewed with region of interest (ROI) only. The experimental results show that the ROI display enhances the viewers' satisfaction when the image size becomes less than $320{\times}240$, and thus it is useful to provide the intelligent display, if necessary, which can extract and display ROI only.

  • This paper explores the throughput performance of CSMA/CA-based DCF protocol over both ideal channels and fading channels with payload size at the MAC layer in the 802.11a wireless LAN. In the ideal channel, there are no errors and at the transmission cycle there is one and only one active station which always has a packet to send and other stations can only accept packets and provide acknowledgements. In the fading channel, bit errors appear in the channel randomly and the number of stations is assumed to be fixed. And each station always has packets for transmission. In other words, we operate in saturation conditions. Up to now conventional research work about DCF throughput analysis of IEEE 802.11 a wireless LAN has been done over the ideal channel, but this paper is done over the Rayleigh/Ricean fading channel. So, the ratio of received average energy per bit-to-noise power spectral density $E_b/N_o$ is set to 25 dB and the ratio of direct-to-diffuse signal power in each sub-channel $\xi$ is set to 6 for combined Rayleigh/Ricean fading channel. In conclusion, it is shown that the saturation throughput is always less than the maximum throughput at all the payload size and the higher the transmission rate be, the higher the decreasing rate of saturation throughput compared to the maximum throughput be.

  • This article explores the international trade flow of Bangladesh's ready-made garments (RMG). We first suggest the brief history and an international structure of trade among countries by using the trade volume. Then we implemented a gravity model regression with the sample of 38 major partner countries in order to investigate the potential export market for the RMG industry. The fixed effect and random effect model for the panel data during the period of 1990 to 2011 are estimated. Our result shows that Bangladesh's RMG exports are affected positively by the size of economy, inflation, exchange rate, foreign direct investment(FDI) and trade openness. On the other hand, the distance between trading partners are related negatively with the trade volume. We used the estimated coefficients from the panel regression in order to predict RMG export potential of Bangladesh. This might show which country is the promising export market for Bangladesh RMG industry. We found that Bangladesh has the highest potential of RMG export with Japan and USA, which seem to have considerable room for export growth if trade barriers and constraints are removed. We added some policy implications for encouraging the RMG export of Bangladesh by using the results from the analysis.

  • In this study, the collision analysis of SCP(Sandwich Concrete Panel) composing the outer tank of LNG storage was performed and its collision behavior was analyzed. For the same collision energy value proposed in BS7777 code, the collision conditions are composed by using two types of missiles and various collision speeds. Nonlinear dynamic analysis models were constructed to perform numerical analysis on the various collision conditions. Also, the collision behavior was analyzed assuming that the second collision with the same collision energy occurs at the same point after the first collision. As a result of the analysis, it was found that with smaller missile and low collision speed had caused larger deformation. The collision energy dissipated in ratio of about 6: 4 in the outer steel plate and the inner filling concrete. In the results of double collision analysis, the final collisional deformation was dominated by the size of the second missile, and the amount of deformation due to the second collision was smaller than that of the first collision because of the membrane behavior of the steel plates. In the offset double collision cases, the largest deformation occurs at the secondary collision point regardless of the offset distance.
